The Alpha's Exchanged Mate
The Alpha’s Exchanged Mate – Chapter 121

Alexander’s POV…

Times like this are when I start to ask myself why I chose to be an alpha instead of just living an ordinary life like every other wolf in the pack. Coupled with the fact that my legs were cramped, I had to stay put in the wheelchair. I needed to stretch them so badly, but I haven’t been alone in like a minute.

At the same time, I couldn’t complain; it’s nice being an Alpha.

The four of us, Caleb, Carlos, Jason, and I, had decided to invite Carlos’s hacker buddy over to help out with our plans in full gear. Working on it overnight seemed like the best time to do so since we didn’t want to raise any suspicion.

So far, the prisoners have gotten to the level at which they can fight off an enemy; that was just about enough to help protect the pack from the attacks of Ben and his counterparts.

The stunt-looking guy said to be called Derek, seems not to be much of a talker. After mouthing some greetings, he had set to work, arranging his instruments.

I had tried calling Edwina, all to no avail; she wasn’t picking up her call. It got me worried. It was unlike her to not pick up her call. I dialed Becca instead. Felt relieved when she told me she was fine but might be fagged and slept off. I learned Sonia had a minor accident.

My mind being too preoccupied with a lot of things had made me almost forget issues as trivial as the presence of Sonia at the packhouse. Also, judging by how much Edwina was overworking herself on behalf of her sister, I hope she doesn’t break down.

“Hmmn, no one told me midnight snacks were this good,” Carlos stated, munching on a burger.

“It’s not even midnight yet. So what are you rambling about?” Caleb interjected, obviously getting pissed. Carlos ignored him, dropping what seemed like a whole bag of junk on the fridge.

“And why would you keep that large amount of junk in the office?” He kept on.

Jason responded on Carlos’s behalf when it was obvious Carlos had chosen to ignore Caleb’s tantrums.

“Derek here likes to eat junk when working, says it helps him think better.”

“Oh, that’s weird. Isn’t that too much sugar?” I asked, surprised.

It had never occurred to me that a grown man could have a sweet tooth.

“Not at all. It makes me more active,” Derek responded, saying his second full sentence since about thirty minutes after he came into the office.

To drive home his point, he snuck his hand into the brown bag and pulled out a box of different flavored sugar-sprinkled doughnuts. When he took his first bite, I almost barfed at it.

“You should try some.” Carlos mused behind me, like the devil on the left-hand side.

“Ignore him,” Caleb warned.

Carlos stomped his feet like a little child, emphasizing why I needed to eat whatever he offered.

“I’m only offering you some burgers. Your belly would thank me.” He said convincingly.

I was getting more amused with the unintended bickering he and Caleb had begun to indulge in.

“I already ordered for some Chinese. He doesn’t need your junk.” Caleb sat on the single couch with his legs on the other end dangling, his head resting on his hand. To think his eyes weren’t actually on us, but he noticed everything.

I chortled silently at grown-a*s men acting like kids.

“Just one bite, and if you do not like it, go ahead and order your Japanese or whatever it is again.” Carlos was intentionally throwing his shade this time around.

The cause of their feud was still not clear.

I nodded my head in agreement to Caleb’s disappointment. It wouldn’t hurt to try something new.

Carlos clapped his hands in excitement as he picked out a burger before handing it to me. It’s not like I have never had a burger.

But I must admit, this particular one did hit home; it tasted really good.

“Hmmn….” I m****d, “this shit is good, Caleb.” I nodded toward him.

Instead, he threw me a dirty look. I turned towards Jason instead. “You should try it, Jason.”

Not waiting for a second invite, Jason joined the movement, and we all munched happily on the burger. Except for Caleb, of course, who finds every bit of our action annoying.

“This is going to be a long night,” Derek said his third sentence as he stared hard at the screen.

All of the binaries and codes written there were so confusing I didn’t bother trying to figure them out. It gave me a headache just looking.

The plan Carlos put out had been followed well; he caught one of Ben’s men in his home and searched every nook and cranny of it. He then got the encrypted phone they use as a means of communication, and there it was, sitting right next to Derek’s computer plugged in.

“What’s the matter, Derek?” Carlos asked, standing behind him.

We were all on alert now after the burger joke. Each of us had returned our focus to our assigned tasks, leaving Derek to perform his magic.

Derek shrugged, “it’s not something I can’t handle. It might just take longer than expected. But whoever has this programmed was a beast at it.” He sounded honored to be working on the so-called beast invention.

Flashes of how keen Ben was on learning how the human world advanced in its technology and how inquisitive he was, visited me then. It made me curse out loudly; I had been getting played for a very long time.

“You all can go back to your work. I will focus on mine.” His fifth to sixth sentence, and Derek was already pushing us away.

“Come to think of it, I’m really not surprised Jared works for Ben,” Carlos stated.

“Jared?” I repeated, trying to search for him in my memory. The name sounded really familiar, but nothing came up.

Jason scoffed, “that son of a gun had always been a two-faced bastard. Remember when we intended to send him out of the gamma clan? Instead, the ex-beta Ben had ordered his release and put him in charge of the prison as one of the prison guards. It’s no surprise he escaped so easily.”

“Are you saying that the snatched phone was from Jared?” I questioned.

“Yes, alpha.” Carlos responded, “I had intended to make a scapegoat from the Omega clan. But Jason quickly suggested Jared, and he was right indeed.”

“I can’t believe he built his own army right under my nose,” I muttered.

“Well, he did win at some point, but not anymore now. We are ten steps ahead of him,” Caleb assured, “my spy at sizzlers says they are still not making any feasible plan. This means we still have the upper hand and just about a bit of time to get this over and done with.

We all nodded in response. It was time to strike the iron while it was still very hot.
