The next morning, Asher woke up with a start. He had just had another nightmare and what’s worse, he couldn’t remember the contents of his dream. This was not the first nor second time it would be happening and each experience left Asher a miserable mess.

He g*****d, holding his head. A headache was approaching, he could feel it. This was not what he needed at the moment but Asher knew he just had to deal with it somehow.

He sighed, rising up from his bed. That was when he noticed that Beth wasn’t in bed. A slight frisson of panic went through him as he thought about where she might possibly have gone.

He stared at the room, trying to see if he could find a clue about her whereabouts but try as he may, there was nothing. It seemed like she had simply disappeared into space without leaving any clues behind.

Asher began to panic as his mind thought about what could possibly have happened. The previous day was tension-filled and with the way she ran out of the room, Asher had a feeling that she might have possibly escaped.

Could she have been kidnapped by some of the council members? Could she have been kidnapped or worse killed? These were the thoughts that filled Asher’s mind as he paced about. He was on the verge of a full blown panic now. He decided to remain calm. After all, this was not the first time she had left the room without her telling him.

He sighed, making his way towards the bathroom to splash some water on his face. He needed to shake the lingering feeling of doom away from his body. He was still rattled by the dream that much he knew and if he was to return back to his normal self, he had to forget about everything that just happened.

The icy cold water hit his face with a splash, sending all thoughts about his nightmare away. Now, he was fully himself and could think on the way forward. He walked out of the bathroom, hoping that Beth had returned but yet, the room was as he left it, lonely and barren.

There was no Beth in sight which left him all the more worried. That was it. Asher stalked out of his room. He had to create a search party to find Beth. Roughly, she was gone for over an hour since he woke up which was odd.

‘’This is odd, really odd. I need to find her.’’ he muttered.

As he took the bend leading towards the main hallway, Beth appeared. Asher stopped in his tracks, staring at her as she walked towards him carrying a tray of food. Just like the previous night, she was looking just as beautiful. Her hair a wild mess but still pretty nonetheless.

Beth was a work of art, he was starting to notice those little details about her much to his own annoyance. She bypassed him, walking back into the room with a light chuckle.

Was she playing with him? Asher thought. He didn’t think so because this time around, he wasn’t playing around. He needed to know where she had been. He almost had a panic attack when she wasn’t in bed. If anything were to ever happen to her or his unborn child, he would never forgive himself.

The fate of his entire race was tied to her giving birth successfully and if there was just a slight mistake or problem, Asher knew he was doomed for the rest of his life and he could k**s being the Alpha goodbye.

Asher sighed, his face etched in frustration as he returned to the room. Beth set the tray on the table before facing him with a full smile. When she saw the look on his face, her smile dropped.

‘’Where have you been?’’ Asher thundered.

Beth shook with fear upon seeing the fury in his eyes. He was angry, livid and at that point, she knew that no amount of begging would ease the look of fury in his eyes.

‘’I’ve been here all night. I just went out to get some breakfast.’’ she said, pointing at the tray of food on the table.

Asher hated that she was scared in his presence. He hated seeing the look of pain in her eyes. It just made him look like a monster which he wasn’t. But yet, he couldn’t stop the rise of anger that threatened to consume him.

‘’Without telling me?’’ he barked.

‘’For god’s sake Asher, how could I have possibly told you that?. You were dead to the world and i knew that it was due to the fact that you were tired.’’ Beth said.

Her anger was rising too but yet, she tried to control it because it wouldn’t make any sense if it resulted into a screaming match. Asher breathed in fury, pacing about. Sometimes. He didn’t understand why they argued so much especially on things that just required a simple dialogue.

‘’Did I tell you I was tired? Answer me Elizabeth, did i ever tell you that?’’ he screamed.

Beth took a step back, shaking visibly. Asher g*****d in frustration, increasing his pacing. For the life of her, Beth couldn’t understand why Asher was treating her like scum, treating her like the dirt underneath his feet.

With the way he looked at her, she knew he hated her so much. The only reason she was still here was because of the baby in her womb. Beth knew that as soon as the baby was here, Asher would push her away without a second thought.

Thinking about that left her miserable and depressed. For one split second, she thought about what could have happened if their situation was different. Would he still be this cold and heartless? Would her life be like this? Would she have found the joy and peace associated with staying with someone you truly loved?

All these and more swirled through her mind as she staggered back to the bed. She slumped on the bed, staring at the man she was slowly beginning to more than hate. Since she began living with him, Asher had made her stay here a living hell. There was not one bone of affection in him.

‘’Why do you hate me so much?’’ Beth asked.

She refused to cry. She didn’t want to give him the satisfaction of seeing that he truly broke her. She secretly congratulated herself for standing this strong even when he said a lot of hurtful things to her.

‘’I don’t hate you.’’ he snapped.

‘’Then why do you speak to me with venom in your words? Am I your enemy Asher? Tell me?’’ she snapped.

If he wanted to play dirty, Beth was ready to play dirty as well. She would no longer sit back and watch him insult her like she was a nobody.

‘’I see. You don’t hate me but yet there are venom in your words when you spit them.’’ Beth chuckled.

Asher stared at her, completely lost for words. Never in his life could he have imagined that this was what she thought about him. At that moment, he felt ashamed of himself but he was never going to allow her to see it.

‘’You’re getting it all wrong.’’ he said lamely.

Beth chuckled, staring at him with a look he couldn’t quite figure out. At that moment, Beth was past caring. She didn’t care what he did anymore as long as she still got to see the next day without being buried to the ground.

‘’Asher, let me tell you something.’’ she said quietly.

Asher stood still, staring at the woman he was starting to admire. She just doesn’t know it yet but he admired her boldness and innocence. He admired her resilience even in the face of threats and anger from the council of elders.

No woman had ever intrigued him like Beth did but yet again, she didn’t have to know what he thought about her. It was best he kept it that way. She was still who she is, the hunter’s daughter. Nothing more.

‘’I’m listening.’’ Asher said.

‘’You can continue to hate me as much as you want but I don’t care what you think of me anymore.’’ Beth more than yelled.

In her eyes, Asher saw a look of determination and bravery he had never seen in her before. It was like she was a new creature, a roaring fire that was prepared to consume everything in her path. At that moment, he knew he had to be very careful on how he dealt with her.

Beth wasn’t going to be a pushover like he thought and he knew he needed to thread carefully around her.

‘’Okay. That’s fair. You telling me you are not scared is applaudable ’’ Asher said.

‘’I don’t care what you think too. And I need you to know that I can handle myself. I don’t want you worrying over me. I hope you understand,’’ Beth said.

‘’That’s where you are wrong Elizabeth. You need to remain where I can see you.’’ he said.

Beth sighed, she knew this argument was one she is likely never going to win. Especially not with Asher and to drag it on and on was something she didn’t know if she was ready for that but yet, she knew she had to be patient because when dealing with a man like Asher, patience was key.
