Chapter 121
Beth arrived back at her temporary room and still met Asher in the same spot and position with Sam in his arms. She walked in and closed the door behind her before going to settle beside Asher on the sofa.
“How did it go? Were you able to speak with Alex?” Asher asked curiously.
“At first, he didn’t want to speak to me just like he has been for the past few days but after he heard I was leaving, he gave up and we hugged it out” Beth explained briefly and Asher nodded.
“The driver called some minutes ago and told me he would be arriving late. That means more extra time.” Asher said and Beth smiled not knowing whether to be happy or be slightly angry for the driver’s lateness.
She let out a sigh, relaxing against him with her eyes closed.
Few more minutes and it was time for her to leave as the driver had arrived already. Asher led her outside and towards the vehicle waiting outside without a single word said between them.
Beth was surprised to find Izzy waiting for her, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. She hugged her tightly as if to squeeze life out of her, causing her long held tears to fall freely at last.
She has been trying to act all strong as though, leaving them behind won’t have any effect on her even though she was breaking on the inside. Izzy cried on her shoulders too as they continued to hug each other.
Beth broke the hug after a while and looked Izzy in the eyes.
“Can’t believe you’re finally leaving, I will forever cherish all the good times and memories we shared. You’re like a sister to me. I will miss you so much, who knows when we are going to see each other again.” Her last statement struck Beth so hard.
“I will miss you too Izzy, don’t just change from the kind and lovely person you’ve always been. Don’t miss or worry over me too much because I would surely be fine. Help me bid Doctors Eva farewell on my behalf, I didn’t get to see her before leaving. Take care of Alex and one more thing,” Beth said and leaned closer, she then whispered something into her ear, causing her eyes to widen a bit more.
“Go right now and see him.” Beth insisted.
Izzy smiled widely and hugged her shortly before releasing her.
Beth moved to where Asher stood, He still carried his son in his arms.
“It’s time to leave Asher.” Beth said calmly even though she feels her heart cracking even as she said those words. Asher stared at his son one more time, he kissed and hugged him to his chest before handing him to Beth.
“Please take good care of my son and most especially yourself. Be careful out there and don’t miss me too much.” Asher said, faking a smile and Beth chuckled.
“Of course I would…miss you insanely. Take good care of yourself too big guy” Beth said and Asher nodded lightly.
She waved him lightly before walking towards the car.
Before she could walk over to the car, Asher turned her around and pulled them to himself, hugging her tightly, his wall finally cracking for the first time. After what felt like forever, He kissed the top of her forehead and then kissed her small lips lightly before stepping away.
“Go on, I’m okay”
She took two step forward and paused, “Asher?”
“yes?”
“Are we going to see each other again?” Beth suddenly asked and Asher gulped so hard.
How can he possibly give an answer to that?
He only shrugged and didn’t give her a reply.
Beth held back her tears as he understood his silence to mean no. It simply means they were never going to see each other again as realization continue to hit her over and over again but she walked briskly to the car to avoid crying in front of him.
She settled in the backseat with her baby in arm, her tears finally flowing uncontrollably.
Beth let out all her tears finally, she never knew it would be this hard. She felt her heart aching so badly and doesn’t want to regret taking her decision.
Months ago, all she ever wanted to do was leave and never return and now that she was finally going home, She felt like she was leaving something behind. Something precious and it hurt her badly that she couldn’t tell exactly what it was.
“Why the tears now Beth? You boldly took this decision, were you expecting it to be easy to leave the ones you have come to love?” Beth thought and began wiping her tears.
She was going back to the city atlas, a place where she has no family or friends anymore. Only she and her son.
“Are you ready to go, ma’am?” The driver asked after a while and she sniffed back her tears before nodding.
He ignited the car engine and drove off immediately.
Asher stood by with clenched fist as he watched the car drive out of sight, his throat went dry immediately and he felt his heart aching uncontrollably and without a doubt, he knew deep inside of him, he never should have let her go but then again he was too late.
**
It’s being hours since Beth left for the city and Asher has become even more restless than ever. He stayed indoors throughout the day and never spoke to anyone. He even refused to have lunch or dinner.
The last time anyone saw him in that mood was when he lost his mate. And it’s been two years since he lost her and likewise, it’s been a year since he felt absolutely lonely and sad. It was safe to say, he was already missing Beth like crazy and his son too.
He just had this sad feeling that he was never going to see them again. But he hopes that both mother and child will be fine without him, knowing fully well he won’t be there to keep an eye on them personally.
His thoughts have been centered on Beth, he was really hurting deep down . for a moment there, he actually thought she would have a change of heart at the very last minute and come back to him and so far she hasn’t and it could only mean one thing, Elizabeth was gone for good and there was no coming back.
He remembered all the sweet memories they had together and couldn’t help but smile.
“She was the best and I unknowingly fell for her. Everything about her amazes me a lot and I wish I could just turn back the hands of time. If that was possible, I would have corrected all my wrongs and she won’t have never thought of leaving”
He suddenly thought about Alex and guilt washed him immediately.
He hasn’t talked or gone to see Alex since the fight to know how he is faring. He felt very bad to have abandoned someone who was like a brother to him all these years.
Will Alex hate him or not? Will he cut off their friendship? How will Alex react if he goes to see him?
Asher pondered greatly and debated whether he should go and see him or not.
After debating for almost ten minutes, Asher decided to go and check on Alex. He was ready for the worst and will accept any reaction from him.
He finally got to his room and stood there for some minutes, he was just feeling so ashamed of himself.
How will Alex see him now? He breathed in and out and then was about to open the door when the door opened itself revealing Izzy.
The latter was surprised, she stepped out and greeted Asher respectfully with a slight bow.
“Greetings, Alpha Asher”
“Greeting, Izzy. Is Alex in?” Asher asked and Beth nodded positively.
“You should go in and see him quickly, he might soon be asleep.” Izzy said and bowed slightly before leaving.
Asher pushed the door open and met Alex sitting close to the window side.
“Did you forget something?…” Alex paused abruptly when he saw Asher, he thought it was Izzy.
He was surprised before it was quickly replaced with a look of indifference.
Asher walked slowly to where he sat as if he was counting his steps but before he could get to him, Alex stood up and went to sit on his bed and Asher wondered what he was up to.
He was expecting him to shout at him or walk him out but he did none but simply ignored his presence.
“look Alex, I know you are_” He began shortly but was caught mid sentence.
“Stop acting like a stranger Alpha and, come and sit down, I don’t bite.” Alex said that last part between laughs, shocking the hell out of Asher who was left feeling buzzed.
Asher nodded before moving slowly sat on one of the chairs and silence ensued between the duo
Asher cleared his throat after a while, breaking the awkward silence between them.
“How have you been?”
“ I have been bruised. I mean, it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be but I’m thoroughly bruised”
“ That’s what you get for going against your Alpha like a f*****g manic. I mean, what the f**k where you expecting, Alex?”
He gave a careless shrug before replying, “I don’t know but the whopping I got was enough for me I guess” Alex said with a chuckle and Asher joined in as well as both men laughed out loud for a while before the room became quiet again.
“I’m sorry, Alex. Sorry I had to hurt you like that”
“I will heal, Asher but what about you?” Alex said curiously and Asher arched a brow.
“How do you mean?”
“You can lie to yourself and everyone else but you don’t fool me. I know you are hurting even more than I am. I mean, if you love her so much, why then did you let her go?”
Asher was quiet for a moment, his eyes staring into space as he mold over the question in his head.
“What made you change your mind? I thought you were going to make her yours forever after I lost the fight.”
“I got caught,”
“Caught? What caught you?” Alex asked, confused.
“I mean I fell madly for her unknowingly, I tried to control and stop myself from loving her but love itself is a bastard. I tried to hate her gut, her smile, her kindness and even her strength but I got drowned in love. I never knew I could still fall for another lady after Macy after she passed away. I swore never to love any other lady but she f*****g changed all that” Asher confessed truly and Alex wasn’t surprised.
He was aware all these while. Heck, he knew it right from the moment he agreed to duel with him. It was his own sick way of forcing him to admit it
“Then if you claim to love her like you said, why don’t you go after her and bring her back to the pack with your son? I am pretty sure Beth feels the same way for you so why punish yourself?”
Asher smiled dryly.
“It’s exactly as you said, Alex. Elizabeth doesn’t belong here. She deserve to be set free and if she comes back on her own which I doubt then she is welcome but if not, I will pretend she was never even here and move on like nothing happened. You should do same”
“Easily said than done, Asher. Absolutely easily said than done”
