Chapter 1323 Daddy Broke His Promise Again!

Athena jolted awake from her nightmare.

"Mrs. Crawford, you're up," Dorian said, rising swiftly.

Athena stared at the ceiling as the villa collapsing replayed in her mind.

"Where's Byron?" she got up and asked Dorian urgently.

He lowered his eyes. "The police and our people are still scouring the waters..."

What he didn't add was the storm swell made launching boats impossible.

Athena paled.

She ripped out her IV and bolted up. "Get the car. I need to go there!"

"An assassin infiltrated Lakin. He nearly killed the children!" Dorian said gravely.

Athena whipped around. "What did you say?"

"Ottilie recognized him as one of the assassins you're pursuing. The kids are terrified. You and Mr. Crawford have been out of contact all day. And now this? Do you really intend to abandon them?" Dorian asked bluntly.

He paused before twisting the knife deeper.

"Frankly, they've lost their father. When will you stop? Until they're orphaned completely?"

His words slammed into Athena's heart like a sledgehammer.

Shortly after, the car screeched to a halt at the entrance of the Lakin villa.

After getting out of the car, Athena hurriedly ran towards the house.

Though the maids had scrubbed the floors, the coppery blood scent still lingered.

Athena's heart constricted as she sprinted upstairs.

"Aiden, Mia!"

At Athena's voice, Mia ran out in tears and dove into her arms.

"Mommy, you're finally back! I was so scared!"

Aiden followed Mia out.

Relief washed over Aiden at the sight of her.

Athena enveloped them both in a crushing embrace as her heart shattered.

Holding Aiden and Mia close, her tears surged uncontrollably.

After so long feeling invincible, raw terror coursed through her now.

"Please, any god out there, give Byron back to me."

She thought so.

Their children had only just discovered what it meant to have a father...

Athena's anguish was visceral.

Sensing her distress, Mia asked urgently, "What's wrong, Mommy? Are you hurt?"

"Mommy..." Aiden was very clever.

He sensed that Athena was in profound sorrow.

"Where's Byron?" Aiden asked.

"Daddy had work like he said this morning!" Mia insisted through sobs.

"Yes, he's away for work, a bit longer this time."

"Even though Christmas Day?" Mia asked, surprised.

Athena stroked her cheek. "Maybe next time..." She couldn't meet Aiden's gaze.

"Oh... okay..." Mia lowered her head.

Her enthusiasm for the holiday deflated.

She thought, "Daddy broke his promise again!"

It was already late at night.

Athena was back, and Mia's sense of security was back too.
