Chapter 1324 Never Called Him Daddy

"I'm afraid not this time," Athena said gently. "Your dad's on an important mission. I can't contact him until it's done." "Will you miss him, Mommy?" Mia asked.

Pain lanced Athena's heart.

She nodded. "Of course."

"He'll be happy to know that. I'll tell you a secret. On Christmas Day, Aiden and I were going to call him Daddy!"

Athena teetered on the edge of breaking down.

She soothed Mia before slipping from the room.

Outside the door, she clutched her chest as tears spilled over.

"Mrs. Crawford..."

Ottilie stood before her, at a loss seeing Athena's distress.

Athena composed herself and crouched to Ottilie's eye level gratefully.

"I heard you saved Aiden and Mia. I can't thank you enough."

"Just doing my duty," Ottilie replied. Hesitantly, she reached to clumsily wipe Athena's tears. "Because Father was too late?"

Ottilie knew about Byron from Dorian.

Athena shook her head.

She said gently, "Get some rest, Ottilie. No more danger tonight. After the next few days, I'll reward you properly."

"Okay." Ottilie nodded.

She headed downstairs, glancing back periodically.

At the landing, Dorian pulled her aside.

"Well? How is she?"

"Crying very sadly." Ottilie's head drooped.

Dorian sighed, opting not to tell Ottilie that Athena had planned to die with Byron.

"Off to bed, kid. I will stand guard," Dorian said gently.

Reassured by his presence, Ottilie obeyed.

So, she went to her room.

After Ottilie left, Athena went to Aiden's room.

It seemed Aiden was waiting for her too.

He looked up expectantly when Athena entered. "Is Mia asleep?"

Athena nodded weakly before sitting across from him.

"Was Byron kidnapped?" Aiden asked.

After getting to his room, he messaged Logan for information.

But as soon as he mentioned Byron, Logan swiftly changed the subject, saying he was already at the airport and would arrive in Mailand during the day.

Seeing Athena's silence, Aiden pressed on.

"I can find out online if you don't tell me."

Athena met his gaze, choking back sobs as she recounted the day's events.

Stunned, Aiden murmured, "Byron's dead?"

"Without a body, he's not dead!" Athena insisted. "Didn't we think Jaxson died too? But he's fine now. Your dad loves us. He wouldn't abandon us!" Aiden searched her eyes.

The ever-stoic boy paused, then his lip quivered as tears spilled down his cheeks.

He threw his arms around Athena.

"Mommy, I regret now that I never called him Daddy..."

He cried into her shoulder.
