Maya

A few hours before

I watched Nate as he bleached and Axel stood there with his mouth open waiting for the next fork.

“Dad,” he said in a reproachful tone, grabbing his fork and putting it in his mouth. He must have really been hungry.

“How much?” Nate asked.

I looked down at my phone, “More than two months,” I said with a string of my voice, feeling the tears rising.

Why did I cry now? Again!

“Okay,” Nate said super serious, and stood up.

I watched him move and walk to the door and then walk out without adding anything else. I frowned at the door as I felt a burst of heat pervading me. God, I missed the air!

I went to the kitchen window and opened it wide, looking out with my head to breathe deeply. I looked down and I saw Nate walking fast through the crowd.

I kept breathing deeply while my body was sweating. Heck. What now?

True, we were married and we had already planned the possibility of having children but IN THE FUTURE not now! Axel was still small! And I had just started medical school!

How did that happen? I used to take the f*****g pill every goddamn day, I was always punctual, given the amount of s*x Nate and I had.

How did I not notice the delay? How is that possible?

The truth was, I was so worried that I was watching Axel, going crazy behind him, I didn’t realize anything. I’d lost track of everything, even my period.

Oh f**k!

“Mom?” called me in the perfect angelic voice of my child.

I pulled my head back and looked at him. Axel had all the sauce on his face, and he had his tongue out as he tried to roll up the spaghetti with his fork, failing miserably.

My heart was tightened. Axel was my whole life, I loved him more than anything in the world, and the idea of having another baby, it made me feel something inside me.

I approached him and helped him. I started to feed him and he opened his mouth eating cheerfully and making sweet verses that only made me cry in my eyes, again. I snorted and wiped them with my free hand. I didn’t even know where Nate was going. He could have gone to an airport and taken the first plane.

Axel finished eating the pasta and continued with the meatballs. I cut them into pieces and started to feed him when the door opened.

Nate stormed into the kitchen, and I froze, the fork in mid-air, and Axel gasping.

Axel leaned over and took the last piece of meat. Then he grabbed the plate and picked it up to show his father and then he started “Dook Dada! Axel good!” he said cheerfully, showing the empty plate.

Nate looked down at Axel and immediately his eyes softened as he passed a hand through his blond hair, messing with it.

“Very good,” he said proudly.

“Where have you been?” I asked him looking.

“Did you cry?” Nate asked, scowling.

“He ate everything,” I said, trying not to cry again.

Nate rolled his eyes and then placed an envelope on the table. I looked at him frowning, “What is it?” I asked doubtfully.

“Pregnancy test,” he said, taking a napkin and wiping Axel’s face.

“Twiscuit,” he said.

“How about we eat ice cream with cookies?”

Axel lit up and clapped his hands immediately.

“I don’t have enough pee,” I complained.

Nate took a bottle of water and handed it to me “Drink” he ordered.

“Are you serious?”

“Very serious. Now Maya”

I snorted and opened the bottle and started drinking as if I were in the Sahara desert. I drank the whole bottle for over a liter while Nate made ice cream in a glass for Axel.

When I finished with the water, I slammed the bottle on the table, trying to make as much noise as possible. Axel looked at me frowning.

“No, Mom,” he said, warning me.

Nate laughed and handed him ice cream in his Spider-Man cup. Axel immediately grabbed the spoon and put it in his mouth under Nate’s watchful eyes while I took the bag with the test and went to the bathroom without saying a word.

*****

I came out after ten minutes with the test in hand. I had been waiting for the water to take effect so I could take the f*****g pregnancy test.

Nate and Axel were on the couch. Nate held Axel in his lap, my baby’s back resting on Nate’s huge chest while he kept his nose tucked into his blond hair.

I walked in and sighed dramatically and left the test on the coffee table before throwing myself at Nate.

My husband looked at me frowning, as did my son, both had the same expression.

“You just peed a little, don’t be so melodramatic”.

I sighed again and I lay down with my head close to his legs while Axel slapped me “Mama no nelofraggativ”, he said seriously.

Nate and I laughed and he wriggled from his father’s embrace and as soon as he was on the ground he started running around the apartment.

“I don’t know how it’s possible that I didn’t notice the delay,” I said, looking at the ceiling.

“That would explain the vomiting, the mood swings, and your obsession with my c**k,” he said, stroking my hair.

“Would you object to my desire for your d**k?” I said.

“Bick, Bick, Bick” Axel began to say, running around the table.

“God, we must stop talking in front of him, he will learn all your wonderful vocabulary,” I said.

“You don’t mind my vocabulary while I’m f*****g you,” he said, leaning over and giving me a gentle k**s on the lips.

I sighed, “What shall we do?” I said, looking him in the eye.

“Why are you so worried? We are already doing well and we already have a baby. We are going to buy a house, you are fulfilling your dreams. We’ll just expand the family,” he said, shrugging his shoulders.

“Won’t it change things between you and Axel?” I asked.

Because yes. In the end, Axel was not his b***d, things would have been different with a child actually his.

Nate frowned, “Why should it change?”

“I know you love Axel, but it’s different with a child that’s really yours,” I said almost in a whisper.

“Axel is really my son. I don’t care about his b***d, he’s mine,” he said.

I bit my l*p and I felt a pinch in my chest. God, this man was perfect, how did I get so lucky? I nodded and sighed.

“I think it’s time to look,” I said, feeling a bite in my stomach.

We both looked towards the table, towards the answer to our questions. We both held our breath. Because the coffee table was empty and the pregnancy test was gone.
