“I think it’s time to look,” Maya said.

I could feel my heart beating in my throat from the excitement, I was excited to have another baby with Maya, and I had to admit, if the test came back negative, I would be very disappointed.

We both looked towards the table, towards the answer to our questions. We both held our breath. Because the coffee table was empty and the pregnancy test was gone.

Maya immediately pulled herself up and began to look down, frightened.

“I left it here! That’s not possible!” Maya said as she looked under the table.

“Mom, Dad!” Axel yelled as I also leaned under the table to look for the test.

“Not now, Axel,” I said, raising the carpet.

“Dook!” he shouted.

I looked up and stopped. Axel was holding the pregnancy test and running around the kitchen table, lifting it in the air like a toy.

“f**k. Axel, let it go,” I said with my teeth clenched as Maya got up and looked at him with her eyes wide open.

“Baby, please, it’s not a toy,” she whining.

“Momy tly!” he shouted and threw himself towards the window and then launched the test as if it were a paper plane outside the window.

I was too slow and couldn’t stop it, and all I could do was watch the test fly out the window.

Maya rushed as I blocked Axel, afraid he might jump, too.

“What the f**k!” she shouted.

“Why is this f*****g window open?” I hissed.

“Because I wanted to change the f*****g air!”

“f**k, f**k, f**k, f**k,” Axel repeated cheerfully as he clung to me.

“Axel” hissed Maya looking at him, “How many times have I told you not to touch my things?”

Axel froze and immediately his eyes filled with tears “Axel no bad. Axel make mum louth,” he said, sobbing loudly.

Maya opened her eyes wide and immediately took him in her arms, wrapped him and kissed him on the head “You always make me laugh love,” she said softly, sticking her nose in Axel’s hair.

“Love you,” Axel said.

I sighed, “I’m going to buy another one,” I said defeated.

“Daddy no sad” said Axel “Daddy love Axel”.

“More than my life,” I said, bending down and kissing him on the cheek.

I came back from the pharmacy, and I walked into the apartment, Axel and Maya were at the window, and Maya was talking sweetly to Axel and they were looking out the window. Axel was focused while his mother pointed to a plane in the sky.

They had not noticed my presence, so much they were concentrated inside their bubble. So I took my phone and I took a photo of them, and that would be my next screensaver.

“I have another one,” I said, popping their beautiful bubble.

Maya turned and I saw how her eyes lit up when she saw me, as did Axel’s, and my heart galloped happily in my chest, my stomach seemed to fly, and I was happy.

“Can I say you’re wonderful?” I said like a fool.

“You are gorgeous too, love, so sweaty,” Maya replied with a mischievous flash in her eyes.

“Love you Daddy,” Axel said at the same time.

I put the bag on the table and picked him up “I love you too” I said hiding my face in his head.

“I’m going again,” Maya said, kissing me on the cheek.

She nodded and I watched her lock herself in the bathroom. I went with Axel to the couch while I was hugging him like that, I couldn’t leave him.

I don’t know how long we stayed in that position, but at one point, I heard a thud, and then Maya opened the door and ran over to me, with the pregnancy test in her hand, and she smeared it in my face.

I didn’t understand anything, I only saw the writing Pregnant as big as a house while Maya sank into a cry between the desperate and the happy.

She jumped on me and Axel and hugged us.

“Mom no sad,” Axel said, hugging her, “Axel good, mom no cry”.

“You’re so perfect baby,” Maya said, kissing him on the cheek.

I looked at Maya, still confused “We’re gonna have another baby?” I asked her.

“We’re gonna have another baby,” she said, nodding and hiding her face in the hollow of my neck.

We were hugged like this on the couch. The three of us and the new creature that was growing inside Maya.

I felt my eyes wet and I tried to control the tears that threatened to cover my face completely. I hid my face between Maya and Axel, trying to stop him from seeing my tears, but I couldn’t hide the hiccups.

“Dad no sad,” Axel said.

“I’m not sad,” I said in a hoarse voice.

“Nate, don’t cry, you make me cry too, please,” Maya said with a thread of her voice before bursting into uncontrollable tears.

We sat on the couch, hugging each other like that, I don’t know how long, but when we came apart, the sky was dark and Axel was blissfully asleep. Maya’s eyes were almost closed and her head was resting on my shoulder, her tired eyes were on me and they were shining like never before as her lips had a fabulous smile.

“I want to stay like this forever,” I said, kissing her on the forehead.

“Mmmmh, that would be great,” Maya replied in a hoarse voice.

“It’s late and the little beast is asleep, we go to bed, if he wakes up tonight we’ll make him some milk with biscuits”

Maya looked at me frowning “It would be better to wake him up and make him eat, you can’t make him skip dinner”

“I’m not saying that, in a few hours he’ll wake up and we’ll feed him, now I just want to sleep with you,” I said looking her in the eye.

“You’d do anything to f**k me,” she said.

“I’m not talking about s*x, malignant.” I laughed back.

I gently moved it from above me and stood up with Axel in my arms. I put my hand to her and she twisted her fingers together with mine and we went to our room together.

I took off Axel’s shoes and undressed him, left him alone in his leotard and put him in the middle of the bed.

I stood and watched Maya take off her clothes and was left alone with her panties and bra that immediately slipped off. She took one of my shirts and put it on and then went to the bed and crawled to stand next to Axel.

I took my clothes off, too, and I was all boxed up, and then I got on the bed, on the other side of Axel.

I stretched out my arm and locked them both up and then placed my hand on Maya’s still flat belly, Maya put an arm under Axel’s head while a hand rested on mine on her belly. I drew my head closer to Axel’s and put my chin on it.

Maya gave me a sweet smile and closed her eyes as I did, letting myself be enveloped by Morpheus and the warmth of the two most important people in my life, I correct, the three most important people in my life.

Present

That Brad had just disappeared in the hallway when Maya leaned on me and sighed. I gave her a k**s on the head, savouring her wonderful scent, trying to calm my anxiety.

Seeing my sister, so broken, suffering so much, made me shake my a*s like never before. Should Maya have suffered this too? I would have ripped my balls off before I put him through something like this.

“Are you okay?” I asked her.

“Wonderfully,” she said, smiling.

“Was it the same with Axel?” I asked, frightened.

“That’s every birth, Nate,” she said, her head resting on my shoulder.

“You were alone,” I continued.

“My mother was there,” she said with a sigh.

“You will never get rid of me, I will be attached to you like an octopus, you will have to answer me every two minutes and I will not allow delays, Maya,” I said as serious as possible.

Maya snorted, “We’ll see,” she replied, “Can we not tell anyone right now?”

“Whatever you say, mon amour,” I said.
