Let Me Love You Again
Chapter 118

Nate

I looked into my father’s eyes, the same eyes that belonged to my harpy sister and that I already imagined gloating at the situation I was in.

Axel looked at me just as seriously and, had it not been for that particular situation, I would have burst into a thunderous laugh at seeing my father and son in that position, but I couldn’t, so I just bit my inner cheek to avoid laughing.

“If you want to be pissed off because I came home, you don’t have to, I’ll save you the trouble. Whatever you tell me will never make me regret the decision,” I said by placing my ankle on my knee and looking at my father, “If I went back, I would make the exact same choice. I didn’t leave in the middle of the case, I didn’t give up anything accomplished. I closed that goddamn case in record time, I was the best, no one can match what I did, not even Jess, I solved every single problem, circumvented every technicality and drafted an ironclad contract.”

“I don’t question your work skills, Nathaniel,” my father sighed.

“So what?” I asked, raising an eyebrow.

“You’re a lawyer, you don’t leave a case until you have your last signature,” he said.

“Bullshit” you snorted.

My father frowned at me, “Don’t you dare”

“You’re just pissed because you wanted your name on that case, all to raise the firm’s name, but I don’t care. You cannot complain that I wanted to go home to my son and my pregnant wife. You would have done the same”.

“I’m not grieving that, I’m grieving that you don’t think of anyone other than yourself.”

“What about you? You sent me across the country all alone, knowing what a shitty time I was going through, just because you wanted your name on a case like this. Isn’t that being selfish?”

“I did it to make you name”

“Bullshit,” I said, snorting again.

“Watch your mouth, Nathaniel, I’m your boss and your father,” he said.

“You’re my father only when you care. When I asked you not to send me across the country, you didn’t be a father, you thought about your name and ego more than what would make me feel good. Do you know how sick I was to think that Maya had to deal with all of Axel’s problems on her own? To know that she would go without me to the ultrasound? That I missed the most important moments?”

“It was to give you experience, Nate, I won’t apologize for sending you away. One day the command will pass to you and you will be forced to make similar decisions, to leave your family for weeks because this is our job, this is what I created. You think I didn’t make sacrifices to get where I am? Ask your mother how many nights she slept in a tiny apartment by herself because I was trying to get a name so that we wouldn’t have to live on more hardships. It is not about being selfish, it is about making sacrifices, a word that you have never known before because you have been served everything on a silver platter”.

“So it’s supposed to be some kind of lesson? Why did you have to make sacrifices so should I?” I frowned and looked at him grim, “Well thank you, Dad, you taught me something, how not to follow in your footsteps,” I said, getting up.

“Don’t be dramatic now”.

“If you cared so much about this case you should have gone yourself, at least you would have been happier and you would have done better since you didn’t have a word of respect for the hard work I’ve done in these weeks. The others may have taken credit for the case, but I’m the one who put all the pieces together, without me they wouldn’t have done anything but I’m sure that your congratulations will be reserved for others” I got up from the chair “Come, Axel” I said by turning on my heels and walking to the door and opening it.

I was on edge and I didn’t give a s**t. A lesson. He sent me across the country to give me a f*****g lesson I absolutely didn’t need. f**k him!

“Axel says, Bye Granpa!” Axel said cheerfully.

I heard Dad mumbling something to Axel and then his little steps on the floor. I took his hand and together we went to the elevator, and then we went in and out of the building.

Once in the car I sighed defeated.

At least he didn’t fire me.

Maya

“Dad’s pissed as hell, says Nate is disrespectful and bossy,” Jess said on the phone, laughing.

I didn’t know what was so funny.

“The secretary, who was listening at the door, says that they attacked and offended each other” continued Jess “In the end, Nate left after almost f*****g Dad but at least he did not get fired”.

“Why are you so happy about this?” I asked her as I passed a hand on my stomach.

“I’m not happy. Or at least yes, but for other reasons. It’s the first time Nate’s held the land to Dad and stood up for himself, all because of you,” he laughed.

“What do you mean?”

“I think Dad wanted to test him, see if he was a good boss. Until now, Nate has always obeyed whatever order he was given, without batting an eye, he doesn’t have what it takes. Dad just wanted to see how far he would go without blinking”

“I don’t like these experiments on Nate, especially if he’s suffering. You don’t know how he’s been all these weeks, he’s been shit.”

“He’ll need it to grow,” Jess replied.

I snorted my eyes.

“At least Dad got what he wanted. Although the case is closed by others, Nate’s name is on everyone’s lips. They say he solved every problem very well. I think the idea of going home as fast as he could have made him do his best. Customers are flocking to the office,” Jess said cheerfully.

“Clients you can’t acquire because you’re on maternity leave,” I said in an acid tone.

“Oh, I don’t think so. No more motherhood, no more feeding. I can’t let that beaker of my brother surpass me, it took him a few months to make a name bigger than mine I can’t afford to waste any more time otherwise everyone will want to work with him,” said Jess.

I frowned, “It’s not wasting time, it’s your kids, Jess,” I almost said shocked.

“Yes, I know, but children don’t eat if mom doesn’t work,” she said.

“And Andrew?” I asked, laughing.

“He can stay home and be a dad, it’s not possible that only women have to take maternity leave,” she said in an annoyed tone “What about you? How’s it going with the classes?”

“I’m in deep s**t,” I admitted, “Axel hasn’t let me breathe in the last few weeks, and I’ve barely been able to retrieve my notes, now that I can all I do is sleep. I hate my stupid hormones,” I said whining.

“Don’t complain. At least this time you have someone to vent your s****l frustration about instead of using s*x Toys all the time”

“Venting is a big word, for a month we did nothing but masturbate while talking on the phone, all I have was last night, a full night of epic s*x, I was never so horny as last night, at some point I thought I broke his d**k because he didn’t respond anymore, then I jerk him off, and puff! He’s alive!” I said excitedly.

“Ouch! That sucks, May! I don’t want to talk about what you’re doing with my brother!” Jess yelled on the phone.

“You started the conversation!”.

I heard Jess say something incomprehensible and then clear her throat.

“Can I come with the kids this afternoon? I want to talk to you about something.”

“Do I have to worry?”

“No, I don’t think so, it’s about Lucas, but I want to talk about it myself”

I sighed, “All right, I think Axel will be happy to see the kids again,” I said when the front door opened, “I have to go, Jess,” I hung up and got out of my supine position on the couch.

I did it very awkwardly, to go against my wonderful husband. I wanted him.
