Let Me Love You Again
Chapter 101

Nate

I parked the car in the parking lot inside the building where we lived. It was one o’clock in the morning and I felt broken.

After the meeting with Dad we locked ourselves in the conference room to study the case that we would go to deal with in the weeks when we would be in Seattle, we had worked non-stop and we had not stopped for a moment except to have dinner. A beautiful takeout dinner we had had while we continued to discuss the case.

As much as I wish Jess wasn’t on maternity leave, at least she was going to go first to Seattle and get me out of the game.

As great an opportunity as a lawyer was, it was bad timing. I had no desire to leave Maya and Axel all that time alone. I didn’t even know if I could make it back at least the weekend, and in two weeks we had the other ultrasound.

What a shitty timing.

I sigh and I take the key out of the picture and then I get out of the car and I lock it.

I entered the elevator on the underground floor and pressed the floor of our apartment. That weekend I would have to completely disassemble everything so that, when the messengers came, Maya would not have touched anything and she would not have strained, but I also had to be careful not to leave boxes around otherwise Axel could have been hurt. I put my hand on my face.

I was planning on taking the whole week off so I could take care of the move, so could fix the new house.

After a week from the end of the dickhead nightmare, Maya and I had decided to move to find a house and we had found one in record time. It was an opportunity not to be missed, the house was fabulous. It was located in a quiet and new neighbourhood, the houses had just been built and were super modern.

The small house rose on two floors and was large, had a large window overlooking the back garden and a porch built entirely of wood, the garden was closed by a fence with a wall painted white and an iron fence, with a front gate and automatic gate to park the car in the garage.

The moment we saw the house we fell in love, as did Axel who had started to run up and down the ground floor, but as soon as we were told the amount we had changed our minds. At that moment we could not afford such a figure, although I had a very fruitful job, we did not have enough funds, so our parents had blatantly allied themselves to buy us the house since they could not give us a wedding party, They offered to pay us half the house while Maya and I covered for the other half.

The result was that we had signed up within a few days and started buying supplies for the rooms.

My mother and Maya’s mother had dragged her to Ikea to buy the necessary for the children’s rooms, ending up filling her with supplies, as well as filling the baby girl and Axel with clothes.

I remember that day Maya came back desperate and begged me not to let her go shopping with our mothers anymore.

For my part I had spent every weekend assembling the furniture in the new house and now there was nothing left but to fix the last things we had in the apartment and I was going to do it that week as well as baptize every single corner of that house together with Maya but, Apparently, it was no longer possible.

I should have given the task to someone else.

The elevator doors opened and I pulled the keys out of my pocket and then tucked them in the lock and opened them as quietly as possible.

The apartment was completely dark except for a faint light coming from our room.

I locked the door and took off my shoes, and left them at the entrance, and the jacket.

I untied the tie knot and went to the bathroom to wash quickly. I left the clothes I had taken off in the laundry bucket and put a towel around my waist before leaving the bathroom. I turned to Axel’s room and saw the night lights, which reflected drawings on the ceiling, so I looked out. I saw Axel blissfully asleep in his bed, his fists clenched, and the pacifier in his mouth.

I wanted to approach him and mess up his hair but I was terrified to wake him now that I saw him so peacefully asleep. I looked at him for a while, with my shoulder resting on the door frame then I picked myself up and went to our room from which a dim light came.

I went in and looked at the bed where lying strangely there was Maya holding a book. She had her bedside lamp on, her back resting on the headboard of the bed, and her head dangled as she embraced the book she had.

Seeing her that way, I smiled and felt my heart gallop like the first time I’d seen her after five years. I didn’t think that feeling would get so strong over time, but the more time went by, the more I realized how much I loved her and how lucky I was to have her in my life.

The shirt she was wearing had risen imperceptibly and there was a glimpse of her round belly.

I dropped my towel on the floor and put on my boxers before crawling across the bed. I wrapped my face around Maya’s and rubbed my nose in her hair, inhaling her sweet scent that had become even stronger since she was pregnant. Maya breathed deeply and moved slightly before I kissed her lightly on the forehead.

She stretched and stretched her arms towards my neck, leaving the book that she held firmly to her body.

I stormed her face with k****s as she laughed softly and rested her head on my shoulder. I surrounded her body with my arms and then bent down to leave light k****s on her belly, moving the book and throwing it on the ground, while Maya passed her fingers through my hair yawning.

“You came home late,” she said sleepily.

I lifted up and left a k**s on her lips, “We were working on a very important cause,” I said, rubbing my nose against hers.

Maya stretched again and then settled better on the bed, sinking her back into the pillow and looking at me with eyes full of love, her hair ruffled and the shoulder of my shirt slipped, leaving her uncovered a portion of the shoulder.

“What kind of case?” she asked, looking me in the eye.

I shook my head and bent down, resting my head on her legs, a few centimetres from the round belly to which I gave more k****s.

“I don’t want to talk about it, but tell me what happened today,” I said looking down at her.

Maya stuck her fingers in my hair and smiled softly, “Did you see the picture I sent you today?” she asked me cheerfully and I nodded.

So she began to speak cheerfully, as if she hadn’t spoken for months while I stood there watching her, completely lost in her beauty, completely lost in love.
