The Alpha's Exchanged Mate
The Alpha’s Exchanged Mate – Chapter 75

Alexander’s POV…

I stared out the car window as it glided through the road, trying really hard to keep my thoughts from swimming off shore. I sighed deeply with every passing second, the car was awfully quiet, and I could tell Caleb was lost in his own thoughts.

“Mind sharing what bothers you so?” Caleb asked, breaking the silent jinx and holding the atmosphere.

I blinked rapidly like I had just been pulled out of a trance, “a whole lot.”

“You could break it down.”

“Don’t know where to start.”

“Either bottom or top, all you need to do is talk.” He insisted, gripping the wheel. His arm veins seem like they might pop at the force.

“Ben’s malicious attitude amazes me, and then again, I wonder what got into Sonia to have exposed the sizzler pack wolf yesterday. We have to affirm if all she said was true and she isn’t just trying to blackmail her sister and the rest of the pack emotionally.”

“Is that why you intend to see her, at this hour?”

Bitterness laced Caleb’s words, and I couldn’t rebuke him for it. I, too, would have been mad if someone had dragged me from my bed like that.

“I’m not heading out just for that.” I informed him.

“What then?” I noticed as his brow raised up.

“Talking to her about her sister seems necessary. I hate the way Edwina keeps beating herself up for someone who obviously doesn’t give a shit about her.”

“More reason why you shouldn’t be on this journey.” Caleb reasoned

“It’s all for Edwinas sake, I feel bad for her almost guilty like it’s my fault. If only I had just married her years ago, all of this mess could have been avoided. I guess that’s the punishment I get for refusing to heed the moon goddess.” I inhaled sharply, causing a hitch in my breath.

Caleb remained quiet, not saying anything, just as I attempted to relax back into my thoughts. He blurted, “do you not trust me?”

I stared at him in confusion. What the hell was he talking about? “Why would you say that?” I queried

He shrugged, not meeting my eye, “aside from the fact that you have been trying really hard to avoid the elephant in the room. You seem skeptical about letting me in on all your thoughts.”

I felt the urge to throw my hands up in the air like I had seen human ladies act when they were frustrated. “How else do I prove to you that I trust you?”

“Pardon me if this sounds out of line, I just want to be certain that you trust me to some extent.”

I rubbed at my forehead lightly, “you practically know everything about me, Caleb. I just have so much on my mind, and as for the elephant in the room, I know it isn’t your fault a sizzler soldier got into our midst. It’s of common knowledge that some pack members aren’t so loyal anymore.”

I could have sworn I saw him release a breath that he must have been holding for long. This man is crazy! I must say. Why would he think that I doubted him? I am just about preoccupied enough with the complex situation on hand than that.

“I’m sorry for bringing up such discussion.” He apologized.

I waved him off, “it’s all good, Caleb. What matters now is getting to the bottom of this matter. We only have little time to work things out and enable all of this to turn out in our favor.”

“Ok, Alpha.” He muttered, returning his attention to the road.

I could hear his unspoken question ever since Caleb discovered I could walk, and I told him to keep it a secret. I had still not told him what I intended to do, and I know that alone was a bother to him. However, I hadn’t thought of it much, and I had nothing to hide as it is.

The car finally parked in front of the prison, something in me moved, and I knew it had nothing to do with my wolf. I came here intending to have a full blown confrontation with Sonia, and I needed no one to tell me that it wasn’t going to be a rollercoaster ride.

Pulling out my wheelchair, Caleb helped me into it as he wheeled me into the private visitor’s room.

“Let me get her for you.” Caleb offered.

I raised my hand up to stop him, “not yet, get me the spy from yesterday.”

Caleb’s look faltered, “why didn’t you tell me you had an intention of seeing him?”

“I made the decision at the last minute just as we came in.”

Signaling to the guards, Caleb got them to bring in the spy from sizzlers pack. He looked haggard and unfed. I wonder what torture he had undergone in the process of being interrogated. Not like I felt any pity towards him, it’s just a shame that he would sacrifice himself for such awful people.

One of the guards yanked his hair forcefully as he pushed him to the ground enabling him to keep his eyes on my face.

“Why were you sent here?” I didn’t bother to beat around the bush. I felt eager for all the ruckus to end.

“I know nothing, alpha. I was only ordered by alpha bethel on behalf of Ben to come here and ensure Sonia she would get her release soon,” he spoke with so much fear.

“When do they intend to attack?” I pressed on, not letting any of my thoughts show on my face.

“I have no idea alpha, I’m only just a messenger.” He pleaded.

“Hopeless!” I spat in distaste. “Take him away!”

Caleb looked at me as the guards carried out my order, “what’s on your mind?”

“How soon can we begin the training of those prisoners?”

“As soon as you let out the order, alpha.”

“Have them all lined up and make them swear an oath of allegiance. My instincts don’t fail me, we might experience some fierce attack soon.”

“I would do just that!” Caleb assured, bowing. “What should be done to the spy?”

“Don’t kill him; he might come in handy with time,” I replied.

Finally, I felt like we were getting somewhere; calling on the spy was just a distraction. I wasn’t really ready to talk to Sonia, and I wanted to keep my head straight. Her confession at the trial had me tight. She was a woman I loved and might still feel a little something for. Hearing the things she went through made a part of me helpless. But I knew better than to fall for her theatrics. I’m only doing this for Edwina, I reminded myself. Hoping that sounds convincing enough to my conniving heart.

“You can bring Sonia to me.” I ordered.
