The Alpha's Exchanged Mate -
The Alpha’s Exchanged Mate – Chapter 216
Authors POV…
Ramona searched around the crowd, trying to see if she would get a hold of Becca, but she seemed to disappear at every chance she got to approach her. One thing about the gathering of night howlers is how merry they all become and how they know how to party till the day ends. Especially since the alpha had finally gotten back to his feet. Annoyed at how hard it was becoming, Ramona made her way towards the podium area to ask a guard where Becca was. The guard directed her to the kitchen.
Her heels clattered against the hallways as she manoeuvred her way around the pack house. Getting into the kitchen, Becca was there as she had been told. Standing at the edge of the kitchen was Becca, who seemed so lost in her thoughts. Ramona bit her l*p really hard; she felt so guilty.
For the past three weeks, Ramona had forced her way into Caleb’s home to have him bend to her wheel. Unfortunately, Caleb seems to be much more determined than she was to not give in to her advances.
Every day he drifted away from her, most especially his cheerful self was becoming far-fetched. Ramona’s intention was to take advantage of how Caleb had felt towards her at the beginning of their romp to get him back. But whatever potion Becca had given him to consume. It works really well.
Becca gazed up from her deep thoughts when she sensed someone’s presence in the kitchen. She had chosen to stay in the kitchen to have a moment to herself and, most especially, to avoid Caleb as much as she could.
Her eyes rolled deep into their sockets when the last person she expected showed up. “Ramona!” Becca called out, sounding stressed.
“Yeah, Becca!” Ramona huffed, returning the energy.
“I want to believe you didn’t lose your way, Ramona. Why are you here?”
Rolling her eyes, “you really think I want to be here?”
“Thought as much, so what are you here to do then?” Becca stood up, “maybe I should just excuse you then.”
“You don’t have to leave. I came here knowing I would see you.” Ramona exhaled, pulling out a stool; she invited herself to sit. “Just a few moments with you. That’s all I ask for.”
Becca gave her a scrutinizing look. She and Ramona have never really been much of friends or foes. They have never had issues, and whenever they talk, it has to do with preparing occasions for the pack. But the distance between them grew thicker since both of their feelings had become glaring towards Caleb.
“What do we have to discuss, Ramona?” She finally asked.
“A whole lot, but first, Becca, I would like to make something very clear. I’m just as in love with Caleb as you are…..”
Becca’s laughter made Ramona halt her speech, “you? In love with Caleb? You do know that isn’t true. You think you do love him, but deep within you. It’s a definite obsession that you can’t help but keep repeating to yourself as love.”
Ramona balled her fist in anger, but she decided against responding, knowing that as much as it hurt. Becca was right. It was the main reason she decided to swallow her pride to see her.
“Say whatever you want. I am here as regards Caleb, and before you say a word, he didn’t ask me to come. I came of my own free will.” Ramona paused, “after I had told Caleb about the pregnancy, I had insisted on moving to the house with him because I felt it would be a good way to move onto him and get closer. I wanted him to envision my unborn child and me as a part of his family. But the reverse was the case; Caleb avoided me like the plague. He wouldn’t talk to me whenever he got back from work. He moved around like a zombie. I hear him move around at night, ransacking the kitchen for a bottle. With bags underneath his eyes, he looks like a raccoon. As much as I might want to get a piece of him, not this way. I can’t keep up with him being so miserable; that would be making all of my hard work pointless. These past few weeks have been the longest of my life; I just can’t explain it.”
Becca sighed, “so, why are you telling me all this.”
Ramona glared at her, “don’t you f*****g play dumb with me. I’m not this nice of a person; I’m too selfish for that. You know how much he loves you, Becca. That guy there would never be himself if he lost you to someone else. It took him a long time to realize how much you mean to him. Even though I was the reason behind your separation at first, I am telling you right now that I want you both back. For my own peace of mind, please.”
“And the baby?”
“Come on, Caleb won’t be the first person to have a child out of wedlock. As long as you wouldn’t keep the father away from the child, I don’t have a problem with you both. I would take a break from work when I start showing, and it’s expected of Caleb to do his duties as a father. That’s all that is required of him. All that matters is you both getting by together.”
Taking a deep breath, Becca folded her arms on the kitchen island. “I understand everything you are trying to do, but it still doesn’t matter anymore. Thanks for your concern, though.”
Standing up, Ramona held Becca’s gaze. “I know you are quite the stubborn type, and it’s something that Caleb surely admires about you. But just to let you know, being egoistic and playing hard-hearted won’t be of much help this time. You will lose what matters to you most, and I’m telling you this in all sincerity.”
Turning towards the door, Ramona held a smirk to her face when she caught sight of Caleb by the doorway. Leaning into his ears, she whispered. “You can thank me later. Try to get back your woman.”
