The Alpha's Exchanged Mate -
The Alpha’s Exchanged Mate – Chapter 205
Edwina’s POV…
Leaning into the fluffy armchair I sat on, I bobbed my head back and forth, letting the silence in the study seep into my thoughts. I smiled as the thought of Xander being such a tease last night flashed through my mind. He was really growing on me, and I didn’t want it to end soon or forever. I rubbed at my belly, letting the proud smile spread out on my lips.
Last night I had been worried I would be saddled with nightmares of my father. But I was surprised at how much sleep I had gotten. I slept peacefully like a baby. The torment of having to worry about my messed up family was finally over. All I want is to focus on being happy with Xander and my unborn cub.
However, another fear has settled in the pit of my belly, and it’s one thing I can affirm to it, giving me sleepless nights for as long as it lasts. I shifted in the chair, trying to focus on the book I had on hand.
Becca had been quite busy all day. They were stocking groceries and other things up for the kitchen. I had to find a way to distract myself. Xander had barred me from moving around too much for the sake of our baby. Putting my leg up, resting and eating whatever I desire is my newly assigned duty as the Luna. It seems funny, but I am enjoying this set of new duties.
I had decided to come to the study; it had been a long time since I last sat there. My mind had been too preoccupied to concentrate on a book. As usual, I had stood by the wall to drool over Xander’s mother’s picture frame. I thought of how she had been able to birth an alpha wolf despite being human. I could really use some help and assurance, as I was running wild with the thoughts.
“How long have you been here?” Becca asked as she took a seat in front of me.
I beamed at her, “not quite long, just been about two hours now.”
Staring at my hand in amusement, “and you are still stuck on the third page? You don’t appear really interested in the book to me.”
I snorted, “it’s not like there is an actual deadline for me to finish reading.”
She giggled in response. I tilted my head, taking a moment to notice her behaviour. “Is there something you are hiding, Becca?”
Playing with her fingers, Becca bowed her head. “Why would I do that?”
“Probably because you feel a bit shy about sharing.” I sat up a bit when I caught sight of the blush on her face. “Wait a minute! Are you blushing right now, Becca?”
She waved a playful dismissal hand at me, “stop being so nosy, Luna.”
“I want all of the details. Don’t you dare keep any out of it, ” I mused
Becca grinned with delight, letting out a long sigh. “Caleb and I had s*x yesterday; it was the best feeling ever.”
“Did you get to o****m?” I muttered in a whisper.
Blushing furiously, she looked away from me a bit. “do you have to be so raw?”
I booed, “can’t blame me. I have been a horny pregnant woman walking around for weeks.”
We both laughed loudly, mine ending a bit abruptly. Becca also stayed quiet, giving a scrutinizing look.
“What’s up with you? Spit it out.” She said sternly but in an extremely sweet manner.
“I’m worried, Becca,” I admitted
“Why is that?”
“You know how much everyone hates someone like me.”
Becca looked confused, “why would anyone hate you?”
“Due to my deficiency. I’m scared my child might take after me. My parents, both wolves, gave birth to a deficient child like myself who has no wolf. I’m scared I would bring such doom to the alpha’s household. None of them would forgive me.” I sniffed.
She stared for a while, folding her arms together, “you do know you are no different from the alpha’s mother.”
“She was a human. I’m a werewolf with no actual wolf, Becca. It’s two different things.” The excitement I was feeling before was beginning to deflate.
“Edwina, you can’t say that. And you shouldn’t be bothered about any of those things. Xander would love you endlessly, whichever way. You should know he is sticking with you despite what everyone thinks.”
I snickered, “you do know our marriage wasn’t exactly the love at first sight type of togetherness.”
She shook her head in disagreement, “why would you say such? You don’t need to bother your pretty head about things like this. You should be more concerned about ensuring you and your unborn child stay healthy. The rest can be resolved when you are done birthing.”
I gave a dismissive nod. Becca wouldn’t understand what I was trying to explain. I had been the one who lived practically all of my life as an unwanted member of the pack. And it wasn’t something I would wish upon anyone. I wouldn’t want a child of mine to have to endure such trying times.
My own father never stared me in the face. Even though it’s safe to say that John Sinclair was never worth being considered a father. But I can tell Xander would make a good father. However, it might appear different when his supposed heir is wolfless. That would be a big slap on the alpha, and I don’t want to be the one to bring such shame to the family. My heart felt heavy.
“Tell me about Xander’s mother.” I nodded towards Becca to distract myself.
A smile spread on her face, “like I said before, the alpha spoke endlessly about her. There was no way she wouldn’t interest you. And everyone else who came in contact with her admitted she was the sweetest of all souls and loved life. Despite being human, they chose her. The alpha was happy, and the whole pack revelled in it. And if this would make you feel better, I must say you are just the same as the alpha’s mother. Lovely and sweet.”
I sniffed, staring up at Becca, my eyes blazing with tears. But she was looking elsewhere and with a scared look on her face. Turning my head towards the direction of her stare, Xander stood by the entrance, his face emotionless.
