The Alpha's Exchanged Mate
The Alpha’s Exchanged Mate – Chapter 204

Authors POV…

Caleb blinked consistently, trying to adjust his brain to the mind-shattering news he just got from Ramona. His ear made a distinctive noise as his shaky hands scrolled through his phone screen to check his email. Ramona had meant it when she claimed the pregnancy test result had been sent to his email.

The gynaecologist at the human-owned hospital she had gone to had his number written at the end of the test result. Refusing to get played by Ramona, he dialled the line.

The other line came to life after the second ring, Caleb had been expecting to hear a man speak, but a mature ladylike voice was what he heard.

“Good day, Dr Derby here. What can I do for you?”

Gulping hard, Caleb sat up, “I would like to ask about the pregnancy test result done by a lady at your hospital.” Finding it hard to say the word, he muttered in horror. “I’m her fiance.”

He called out Ramona’s name and her registration number written on the result. Dr Derby had been reluctant at first until she had put a call through to Ramona, who had given the go-ahead for Caleb to be told. The pregnancy was confirmed, with the date and every detail concerning her test.

He cussed out loud at how careless he had acted; Caleb’s head spun in circles as he tried to get a hang of the next step to take. Running his hands over his hair countlessly, he kept breathing in and out in an attempt to control his raving mind.

Standing up from where he sat, Caleb almost fell flat on his face when he wobbled a bit. His chest tightened; it felt like he would have a panic attack. With Ramona being pregnant, the prospect of his relationship with Becca would surely head for the rocks. When he finally felt some inner peace, another chaos had to come into place. It had just occurred to him why he had caught a whiff of the odd smell of Ramona’s arousal. That was due to the state she was in.

Leaning on the table’s edge to steady himself, the door clicked open, letting Xander in. With the look on Xander’s face, Caleb could tell he had been suspicious from the very beginning.

“Why are you sweating so much when the air conditioner is on full blast?” Xander inquired with a raise of his brow.

Caleb sighed, holding up his friends’ gaze. He could envision the disappointment in Xander’s eyes when he got to know about the fresh mess he had gotten himself into. Not being able to tell which would break his heart the most, the hate Becca would feel for him or Xander’s anger towards him.

“Will you tell me what the hell is up with you?” Xander sounded on edge.

He had been quite bothered about his friend the moment they had stepped into the restaurant. Caleb had been acting really strange, and it was more suspicious when he left the restaurant in a hurry after receiving a message. Xander had been unsettled since Caleb left, and the rest of the lunch had turned out less lively. Xander had to head to Caleb’s office immediately after he was driven back by Carlos.

“I feel so lost, Xander.” Caleb eventually let out as he slumped into the chair.

Xander’s eyes stayed glued to Caleb’s, “what are you talking about?”

“I should start from the beginning. Please don’t be so disappointed; I know it’s really stupid of me.” Caleb began shutting his eyes tightly, “Ramona has been seeking my attention for a couple of days now, and I had been insistent on not seeing her. Constant texts and calls, I couldn’t keep avoiding her when she sent a threatening text. Almost like she was sending a stern warning to cause chaos if I didn’t come to her. My mind was so preoccupied I feared she was attempting suicide. Only to return here to find Ramona in the most provocative outfit.”

Xander looked amused at the end of his sentence, “why do you look so flushed at the mention of it? You have always fancied Ramona in whatever it is she wore.”

Shaking his head vigorously, “that’s not it, Xander. I f****d her. We f****d right in here.”

Silence fell into the room, and Xander stared wide-eyed at Caleb. “Please tell me that’s a joke.”

“No, Xander. To make matters worse, she is pregnant.”

“Sounds like a pregnant season.” Xander joked unintentionally, causing Caleb to glare at him. “Sorry.” He mouthed.

“I’m being serious right now, Xander. I have no idea how or when it happened. Ramona had played her cards so well. Becca would never trust me ever again.” Caleb lamented. “I’m so sorry for disappointing you this way, Xander. I’m such a shame for a beta.”

Xander observed Caleb for a split second before clearing his throat. “Caleb, I really don’t understand what you mean by me getting disappointed in you. We are imperfect beings. Of course, we are bound to make mistakes, and no one is an actual saint. The only thing I blame you for is your inability to resist her when she came for you this time around. I have a bad feeling about it. But that’s not to get your mind reeled up again. We would work this out, Caleb, before it gets out of hand.”

“How about Becca?” Caleb inquired, looking a bit relaxed.

“She can’t react if she doesn’t know yet. Let’s figure out a way to negotiate with Ramona. That’s what matters now. Also, letting your woman know a secret of yours when you don’t have a solution yet is really not cool.”

Caleb nodded in agreement hoping Ramona wouldn’t try anything funny by pulling a fast one on him with the information she had as regards them. He tried to not brood over the consequence his irrational act would cost him. Taking a deep breath, he shared a glance with Xander as both of them sat in silence, lost in their thoughts.
