The Alpha's Exchanged Mate
The Alpha’s Exchanged Mate – Chapter 153

Edwina’s POV…

The sounds I heard after Becca’s announcement sounded like a cathedral bell. The earth moved underneath me, and all that mattered was whether Sonia would be okay.

We practically ran the rest of the way to the guest quarters, hurrying to Sonia’s room. I found her seated on the couch, her legs outstretched on the table. Athena was by her side, blowing her some air with a large hand fan. It looked amusing, considering the fact that the air conditioner was on full blast.

“What the hell happened?” I asked, feeling my heart moving out of place.

Sonia gave me a swift glance before turning her head to the side. She obviously isn’t ready to respond to me. Instead, I turned my attention to Athena. My forehead was sweaty.

“Can someone say something! We practically ran miles to get here.”

Athena bowed her head a bit. “She had some contractions and was screaming so loud. I got confused and didn’t know what to do.”

I looked towards Becca with a frustrated glance; I slumped into the available couch, almost stomping my feet.

“Sonia!” I whined.

Becca chuckled, “it’s not her fault, Luna. Carrying a cub is draining. She can only withhold the pain because she is a werewolf.”

Sonia finally turned her head to me, “I couldn’t bear it. I almost thought she was coming.”

I smiled, “what makes you think it’s a she?”

“I can feel it.” She responded weakly, trying to force a smile.

“Becca,” I called out to her.

Becca moved closer to me, “Yes, Luna?”

“What do you think we should do?”

“You might need to call the theta to keep a close eye on her. Considering the situation on ground, she would have a home birth.” Becca explained.

“Please call the infirmary.” I motioned to her. Becca excused herself, “you can leave us, Athena.”

The young girl released a breath that she must have been holding up for a while. The way she moved swiftly out of the room, it was obvious she had been wishing to leave for a long time.

I stood up and walked towards my sister, helping her up. She had her arms around my shoulder, and we moved like snails toward the bed, even though it was only a few feet away. Sonia weighed some tons that could actually make me lapse into a coma. It shouldn’t be funny, but I couldn’t help the chuckle.

Getting into the bed with her, I moved the duvet up her belly, pulling her into my embrace. I rested my chin on her pile of hair, stroking her arm.

Sonia leaned into me, holding me close to herself. It felt so good being this close. All my life, I had never had to be near the same breath as my sister. I sighed in content as I could feel her falling asleep in my arms.

“Love you so much,” I whispered.

“Love you too.” She drawled out sleepily.

My heart soared as I felt tears well up in my eyes. I couldn’t wait for her baby to arrive, so we could all spend premium time together as a family.

Becca returned to the room, smiling lovingly at the both of us. “She has fallen asleep.”

“I noticed,” I responded with a smile, patting her arm lightly.

“Should I come to help you tuck her in properly?” Becca offered.

I nodded, feeling Sonia’s weight telling on me already. Becca moved close to me, holding up Sonia’s arm to help me get off the bed.

“Wow! Didn’t realize pregnant women are this heavy.” I g*****d, trying to stretch out my still back.

Becca laughed as she tucked Sonia in nicely.

“When is the theta coming?”

I wasn’t done asking my question when a light knock came from the door, Becca went to get it, and it turned out to be the theta, and an iota walked in.

“Good day to you, Luna.” The both of them chorused.

“Thanks for coming. Can you check her for me, please? And why is she having so many contractions? Does she need to go in for surgery?” I bombarded them with questions.

The theta smiled lovingly at me. She looked like she would be in her fifties. The warmth that seeped through her eyes made me a bit calm.

“Don’t worry yourself, Luna. It’s a common thing with pregnant werewolves, especially when the due date is near.” She explained, moving towards Sonia.

I watched closely as she checked Sonia’s pulse and also her temperature. I bit hard on my nails, hoping she would be fine. I had never been pregnant before, but I knew a few things from the books I read. Contractions are super painful and, most times, very risky. About a major percentage of the women who experience constant contractions end up birthing through surgery. This isn’t particularly bad, and I wouldn’t mind if surgery were needed to save my sister and ease her pains.

The theta walked towards me, still holding up the smile. “She is fine, and everything seems normal. Being a part of the packhouse, she wouldn’t have to be at the infirmary. My iota here would stay with her all through the night just in case something comes up.” She motioned towards the timid lady behind her.

“Thank you very much, theta.” I cleared my throat awkwardly, “Can you help me with your name? I can’t seem to remember.”

“Theta Kayla.” She responded, laughing.

I laughed along softly, “thanks for showing up on time, theta Kayla.”

She bowed, heading towards the door. Becca and I walked with her. Exchanging pleasantries, I stared as she walked down the hallway. Heading back to the room, Sonia was still fast asleep. Watching her sleep so innocently made me speechless.

“What’s your name?” I inquired from the iota.

“Tricia.” She responded

I moved closer to her, holding up her hand. She looked scared at first.

I chuckled, “I don’t bite.” Gesturing towards Sonia, I turned my head back to Tricia. “Please take care of my sister to your best ability. I have no idea what it feels like to be pregnant or how to take care of one. Please do all you can to look after her and ask me for help when there is a need to.”

The look on Tricia’s face is that of discomfort. I don’t know why I am rambling myself, but I can’t seem to keep my heartbeat at a normal pace.

Nodding her head lightly, “I would do what I can, Luna Edwina.”

Her response made me more relaxed. Looking toward Becca, I sighed in exhaustion.

“Please, let’s return to the main house. I would come to check on her later.”

Not saying a word, Becca walked behind me. I was beyond fagged, and my bones needed a good rest.
