The Alpha's Exchanged Mate
The Alpha’s Exchanged Mate – Chapter 145

Edwina’s POV…

I yawned loudly as the effect of the day’s run around took its toll on me. I had so much ice cream. All I wanted at the moment was to eat to my fill. With the help of Becca, the kitchen chef made a table full of mouth-watering meals. I couldn’t wait to dig in, but at the same time, I was on a waiting spree.

Xander and I haven’t spoken all day, not because I didn’t actually remember to reach out to him. But I was trying to avoid being a bother or getting into his space. Not being sure about your relationship with your supposed husband only makes communication a bit weird. He had told me yesterday that he would be home today.

So many things have been going on with him as regards the pack, and I can hardly keep up. Mostly because he isn’t ready to share yet. I know my sister is part of the reason behind the stress Xander and the rest of the warriors are enduring, and it makes me feel a bit guilty.

My mind is in turmoil about what to do. I don’t know whether to put a call through to him and ask if he would be home for dinner or just wait and watch the food with my belly rotting away.

“Ahhhh.” I let out a not-so-appropriate g***n, causing the attention of the maids to be turned towards me.

“Just call him.” I didn’t know when Becca got to my side until I heard her whisper.

Looking up at her, I snorted. “Why should I?”

“It’s obvious you really want to.” She insisted

I scratched the back of my neck, “I don’t want to bother him. He might be in a pack council meeting.”

“You can only know if you call. I would return to my post now, Luna.” She did a bow that I could swear was her mocking me.

Chortling a bit, I picked up my phone and dialled his line. Xander picked on the first ring.

“All hail, dear Luna.” He cooed into the phone.

I moved the phone from my ear, trying to check the contact I had called again, and it definitely was him. “Are you okay?” I asked, worried that he had a concussion.

“Very fine, thanks.”

He sounded drunk to me, his words slurred a bit. Not wanting to waste time, I threw the question at him almost immediately.

“Are you coming home for dinner?”

I could hear him make a light chuckle, “I’m just a few houses away and mind you, I’m so hungry.”

Smiling to myself, I played with the edge of the table. “You should come soon then. This table is wailing under the weight of the foods it’s being subjected to.”

“Trust me to pop in, in a minute.” He replied, hanging up.

It felt relaxing knowing that I had called just in time. Leaning into the chair, I waited for him to return. And in less than five minutes, Xander was being wheeled into the dining room by Caleb.

Sighting Caleb, my heart palpitated on behalf of Becca. I hoped she wouldn’t get to see him and have to relive the happenings in the morning.

“Good evening Luna,” Caleb greeted with a bow.

My first intention was to grunt in response, but that would be very unnecessary. “hey, Caleb. How are you? You joining us for dinner?”

Before Caleb could object or accept, Xander had to chip in his damn thought. “Yes, he would. We both had a long day.”

They both shared a look that made me second-guess their presence. They definitely were up to something. Wheeling himself next to me, Xander rubbed his hand on my back, making me shiver in delight. Something was going down tonight. It made me excited.

“Wow!” Xander muttered, rubbing his palms together as his eyes stayed glued to the variety of food on the table. “Is it thanksgiving yet?”

“I am so hungry right now. I can finish half of it all.” Caleb chipped in, making me throw him a hideous glare.

“Can we eat now? I’m so hungry.” I mused, feeling my belly worms churn together in protest.

The dishes got served, and it was obvious the three of us were salivating at the beauty of the plate. I could understand why I was so famished, but Xander and Caleb were acting so weird I wondered what they had been up to.

“Becca should join us,” Xander mumbled amidst a chewing spree as he beckoned to a maid. “Go and get Becca. Tell her I asked for her to join us for dinner.”

The urge to protest against Xander’s insensitive attitude was really strong. However, I know better than to indulge in an argument with the Alpha. I tried hard to signal to him, but he appeared to be in some sort of bromance with Caleb. The both of them shared a silent joke; I could tell it was more like a plan between them. My heart went out to Becca, as this would be a super awkward moment for her.

My thoughts hadn’t settled yet when my side eye caught sight of a stunned Becca the moment she stepped into the room. I almost slapped the table in a bid to cuss out loudly.

“Hey, Becca!” Xander’s voice came out a little bit high-pitched.

Bowing her head a bit, Becca tried to keep her gaze everywhere except on Caleb. “Good evening, Alpha.”

“It’s been a moment since I last saw you.”

“Liar!” I muttered under my breath. He was only acting on behalf of his friend. I could tell through his facade.

“Come join us, Becca. This would seem like an appreciation dinner to you for taking care of the Luna and holding things down when I was away for some days. And to Caleb for being so amazing.” Xander continued.

I can definitely affirm now that Xander was drunk. There is no way in hell that rigid young man would ramble out so many words. I could tell because he hardly made jokes since what he was trying to do right now was all a joke.

Poor Becca couldn’t say otherwise and had to oblige to the Alpha. She sat like something had been stuck up in her a*****e. Just when I thought the show was about to be over, Carlos and Jason walked in. I almost hit my head on the table when I checkmated the look on Xander and Caleb’s faces. From the look of things, Xander is literally an adult’s nightmare. A boogie man.
