“My childhood?”

Alex answered with a nod, “How was growing up like for you, living with your parent”

“I don’t remember very much but we lived happily before my mom died and my childhood ended” Elizabeth said simply with a shrug.

“So your father stopped treating you nicely after your Mom died?”

She gave a curt nod. “He acted as if I was adopted and then wanted nothing to do with me again hence his reason for shipping me off to that boarding school even before I was of the legal age”

Alex had a thoughtful look in his eyes as he tried to digest the information she had given.

“was there anything unusual from your past that you still remember?”

She was quiet for a moment as she rake her brain for something.

“I’m not sure but they used to be this strange man that come around to see us. I can’t even remember what he looks like but he used to bring me gifts and his eyes were exactly like mine” Elizabeth said spouting a smile at the memory.

Alex thought about what she had said for several minutes but there was nothing he could say that could explain anything so he wanted to know more.

“And you don’t know him at all?” He asked.

“No. But from what i can remember, my mom was really friendly towards him” Elizabeth said.

“Hmmmm” He said with a nod and she arched a brow.

“Why are you asking all these question?”

“It’s just weird that you are completely different from what a usual Lincoln bloodline would be like. Those people are born to cause pain and leave trial of death but here you are, Elizabeth. And each time I look at you, I can’t understand how you can possibly be that man progeny”

“You think I’m not my father’s daughter?”

“I don’t know to be honest and I don’t want to assume either. Only some test and your mother can reveal the truth because I can’t”

“Well, my mother is death and I’m stuck here”

“I know”

Elizabeth was quiet as she thought about everything about her family. Is there any hint of truth to all that Alex had said? It’s true she had always felt like her father didn’t care for her but not once did she imagined it was because she is not his daughter.

But thinking about everything at that point, she could remember moment from her past where her mother had always been protective over her while her father did the exact opposite. Maybe their way of showing love was different but then again, she can’t remember a point where her father was affectionate towards her.

And he didn’t even made an effort after her mother died.

Elizabeth was so lost in her thought that she didn’t realized Alex had taken hold of her hand until he actually gave it gentle squeeze and she looked up to face him.

“Hey? Are you okay?”

She nodded, “I’m fine. I was just lost in my head for a moment there”

“I know you are probably thinking about what I said but nothing is certain. Everything I said is just observation and theories. No actual fact”

“Yeah, I know”

“Good. Now cheer up before it start raining” Alex said with a knowing grin and she simply rolled her eyes at him.

“I’m not a cry baby if that’s what you mean”

“I didn’t say you are but just cheer up okay?” Alex said, giving her hand another gentle squeeze as he silently reassured her that everything would be okay.

That was the only assurance he could give her and he was quite glad that he had the opportunity to encourage her when she was down. Asher had entrusted them to him and he wasn’t about to ignore that promise.

“Thank you, Alex. For being here. With Asher gone, i really don’t know what i would have done” Elizabeth said with a sad smile.

“Don’t thank me. Glad to be here for you and the baby” Alex laughed.

“Okay” Beth said with a nod before retrieving her hand back to her side feeling nervous and she went to check her baby who was still fast asleep in his cot, little gentle snore erupting his mouth with a peaceful look on his face.

He looked so much like his father when sleeping.

At that point, There were different thoughts going through her mind and topping that list is the thought Asher.

“You miss him right?” Alex asked as he came to stand beside.

Elizabeth didn’t need to ask who he was talking about because she knew exactly who he was talking about. Asher.

“Yes, I do. Very much” She admitted truthfully with a sigh.

“He’ll be back soon, don’t you worry, Elizabeth” he said and she nodded.

“Have you heard from him? Did he ask of us? His son maybe?”

“Yes I have. He always does, especially about you, Elizabeth”

Elizabeth wanted to believe him but sometimes, she didn’t know what to think anymore, Ever since he had left, there were no calls or messages whatsoever. It just seemed like he had disappeared from the surface of this earth without any clues at all.

She didn’t even know if he was dead or alive as all hopes she had been having on his safe return was literally dead. It was a very hopeless situation but Beth knew she didn’t have to lose hope especially for the sake of her son who needed his father.

“Did you tell him, about uhm, what I did?”

“You mean, when you tried to escape?”

She nodded, feeling nervous at his possible reply.

Alex let out a deep breath.

“Well, I didn’t. He already have so much and I didn’t want to add to it”

“Okay”

**

Alex was about to walk out the door when a new messenger showed up at the door.

“Greetings, Beta Alex”

“Greetings. What are you doing here?”

“I bring message from the elders” He said firmly, his eyes narrowing back at Elizabeth who has gone pale on the face at the mention of the elders.

“Speak then”

“The elders have requested for an urgent meeting with you and the hunter’s daughter at the council hall immediately”

Elizabeth froze upon hearing the message. The council of elders were going ahead to kill her and her baby and from the looks of it, they weren’t backing down.

“Are you sure that was the message?” Alex practically growled at him, anger evident in his features.

The messenger of the elders stood with tensed shoulders in his position. so much so that Elizabeth wondered if he was even breathing.

“Yes Beta, that was the instructions I was given”

“Go! We will be there soon” Alex said but he made no move to do as he had been told.

“Sir, the orders were for you and the woman to follow me immediately”

“Are you deaf!?” Alex barked and he flinch, “I already told you we will be there soon and the woman has a name you dimwitted fool. Now get out” Alex seethed.

He shook like a leaf as he practically felt the anger oozing out of his body. This was the first time Elizabeth had ever seen Alex angry and he looked just as scary as Asher did.

All the times she had seen him, he was full of smiles and good cheer but now, he was practically a breathing dragon. The way he shouted at the guard was something Elizabeth had never seen him do before. He was beyond angry, livid instead and she knew he was holding on to the last remnant of patience he had within him.

“Alex” Elizabeth called in panic and Alex let out a deep breath before looking up to face the messenger again.

“Get out!” Alex said, much quietly.

The guard left hurriedly, closing the door quietly. When he left, Alex took a deep breath before turning around to face Elizabeth who was literally freaking out by the corner.

“Alex, they are going to kill me” Elizabeth said.

“Not under my watch” Alex said firmly, his hands balled into tight fists by his side as he stared at the woman before him.

“But you heard what the guard said”

Alex walked towards her, gripping her shoulders. She practically shook with fear and he had to dissipate that fear as much as possible.

“I swear it on my life Beth. I won’t allow any harm to come near you and your son. I swear it” Alex said, holding her gaze.
