Chapter 39

Asher’s POV.

Asher continued to grumble under his breath as he walked towards the fields where he knew Alex, his Beta would be. He needed to talk to someone, anyone who wasn’t Beth or he might just loose it and the only person he knew might be able to understand him none other than Alex.

Another ungodly minute spent with that woman would have driven him but, he knew that much for a fact but never again would he allow her to get under his skin like that. Never again. He got to the fields and sure enough, Alex was at the far end, hacking on a piece of wood. He has already gathered some good amount at the corner, ready to build a huge fire if the need be but he doubt if he is going to stop any time soon unless he interrupt him.

Asher walked towards him, wishing for a split second that their roles were reversed. Beth seemed to get along so well with him that at times, Asher wondered if something else was going on between them but then again, he has known Alex since they were just pups and if there is anything he was sure of, was his complete loyalty to him. And he is not about to doubt him because of that woman. No, not a chance.

‘’Hey man.’’ Alex said, wiping the sweat off his brows when he noticed the Alpha’s brooding presence beside him.

Asher arched a brow at the sweating man before him who was also staring back at him as though he could read his mind.

He watched him placed the axe he was using on the ground before turning to face him completely with a knowing grin on his face.

‘’On ahead Alpha, spit it out. What’s wrong?’’ Alex asked with a playful glint and Asher could only roll his eyes about at his friend/ Beta.

For a moment he said nothing as he stood collecting his thought carefully before he let out a sigh, staring up at the sky that looked so blue, with absolutely no dark lining in sight. Something he wish could be the case with his present life. A clear outlook with no hidden obstacles because he could feel one coming no matter how much he tries to shake off the feeling couple with Elizabeth.

‘’Elizabeth.’’ he simply repeated the word out loud.

‘’Elizabeth?, what has she done this time?’’ Alex asked with a small chuckle.

He sat on the ground, leaning his back against the tree trunk. Asher did the same because he knew they were about to have a long discussion. He wanted to pour out his mind concerning Elizabeth to his Beta since he seem to know her much better than he does lately.

‘’Everything. She’s so stubborn, she never listens to what I say. She is literally driving me insane’’ Asher grumbled.

Alex had a weird look on his face at this point as he was trying his best not to laugh at his friend predicament more than he already did. If he did, there is no telling what Asher might do to him next. He seem really frustrated, the first he has seen in a really long while.

He opened his mouth to speak but its seem Asher wasn’t done talking just yet.

‘’She is annoying and so f*****g impulsive. She always wants to be on the right end even when she knows she is wrong.’’ Asher said and then turned to face him. “How the hell am I going to cope with her until she gives birth”

‘’I don’t know but you have to try Asher. It’s not going to be easy but you have to try either way and besides, Why do i have a feeling that you two just had an argument before you cam over here?’ Alex asked with a raised brow.

“Of course we just did.’’ Asher snapped back with anger evident in his voice.

“Alright, just calm down and tell me what happened ’’ Alex said.

Asher felt like bursting out in anger but had to take a deep breath before recounting everything that had happened leading to that very moment. He was careful to leave out the part where he might already be finding her somewhat attractive so to say the least. Alex didn’t need to know about that. He wanted to keep that aspect to himself until he can get over whatever he was feeling as well.

‘’Well, now I get your point. This is surely not the time for her to be so carefree about she and the baby’s safety. So did she agree with your suggestions?’’ Alex asked once again.

‘’She did but that was after I enforced it on her.’’ Asher said.

“it has to be done but you’ve got to remember that the fate of the pack rests in her giving birth. if anything were to ever happen, it will be the end of our pack and pup unborn” Alex said with a shrug.

‘’You think I don’t know that? That’s why I have to keep her safe no matter what” Asher sighed.

Alex nudge him slightly when he noticed some of the kids from the previous day came bounding towards them. Asher cringed because he didn’t know if he was ready to play with them at that moment.

‘’Hey Alpha, Ready for a rematch?’’ one of the kids grinned.

‘’Not today Sam, I’m really not in the mood. Let do that another time, okay?’’ Asher said.

The kid was downcast but he took it with good fate, “Okay, Alpha” He said dejectedly before walking away to join the rest of his friends. Soon his cries of joy filled the air as they went after each other. That attitude is what he admire most with kids. They never took anything to heart. He really wish he was young again, with no cares or worries, just him and his toys looking forwards to another.

‘’Ouch. The big wolf doesn’t want to play today.’’ Alex chuckled.

‘’Not funny man.’’ Asher snapped at his Beta before chuckling as well.

‘’Okay, on a more serious note Asher, there’s no biggie in this issue. You don’t have to feel sad or depressed. You just have to tolerate her and try as much as possible to make her comfortable at all times. I’ve learnt that pregnant women can be cranky at times. Maybe that’s what is wrong with her’ Alex reasoned.

Another minute went by without neither of them saying anything else before Alex spoke up once again, “So who do you plan on assigning to her.’’

Asher thought about his question for a while and even as he thought about it, he still wasn’t comfortable with the idea of leaving her in someone else care. He didn’t know how to explain but he didn’t quite trust anyone around him except Alex.

‘’What’s wrong Asher?’’ Alex asked.

Asher decided to confide in him. After all, if there was anyone who he felt comfortable with, it was his Beta.

‘’I don’t know if you’ll call this weird or what not but I prefer taking care of Elizabeth myself. I mean, I don’t quite trust any of the guards or maids. After all, they could be in some of the elder’s pay list. I don’t trust that lot at all.’’ Asher said.

Alex could see reasons with him. The council of elders and Asher hadn’t really been on good terms since Elizabeth was spared because of the pregnancy . What was the absolute guarantee that they wouldn’t try to hurt her if Asher takes his eyes off her for a moment. They did it before, they could still do it again when he least expected.

‘’I understand Asher. So what do you want to do now?’’ Alex asked.

‘’To be honest, I really don’t know. I’m still thinking about it but the more i think about it, the more upset I get” Asher sighed.

His gaze wandered towards the field where the children playing for a moment before glancing at his Beta again.

“You are the only one I trust for now so I’m going to need you to keep an eye on her for now before i decide on who to assign to her.’’ Asher said.

Alex answered with a nod, his chest poking out slightly, “I sure will’’ Alex said sharply and Asher nod at him.

They stayed in a comfortable silence for a while, each with their own thoughts. Asher was in a state of disarray as different thoughts swarm through his mind.

‘’You still blame yourself for her death don’t you?’’ Alex asked with a knowing look and Asher let out a breath.

Upon hearing those words, Asher knew who he was talking about. He was referring to his dead wife, a woman whom he had loved so much with all his heart and would always love and each time he remembers that he would never see her again, he couldn’t help but blame himself all over again.

If only he had gotten to her on time, maybe, just maybe she would have still been alive and spreading her charms all over the place. From time to time, he still thought about her but at that point, he could dare say she wasn’t. A certain dark hair woman who wouldn’t stop demanding he calls her by a silly nickname she has chosen for herself. Whether she likes or not, she is Elizabeth and she will have to deal with being called by that name in full just like he was trying his damn hardest to put up with her very annoying presence.

‘’I don’t know if I would ever stop blaming myself for her death but right now, I have other things to attend to’’ Asher said patting him over the shoulder before rising back to his feet.

‘’Alright Alpha, I will just finish up here before I head back.’’ Alex said with a nod towards the remaining log of woods.

Asher nod at his Beta before dusting the specks of dust that had clung to his trousers. Cold breeze came and ruffle his hair a little before he turned and walked away leaving Alex to pick up his axe once again to continue with his task.
