We arrive at the cafeteria, Stiles and I, with our trays in our hands and go to join Alison, Lydia and Scott. I give my brother a hug and sit down. He and I have become closer and closer, and I’m happy about it all the time.

Lydia: By the way, Hannah? Do you like shopping or are you as boring as Allison?

She earns herself a fake black look from Allison and I laugh.

Me: I like shopping, yeah!

Her eyes light up.

Lydia: Sorry Alli! Our friendship isn’t going to be possible! My new best friend is Hannah!

We all laugh until we’re interrupted by Scott’s ringing phone.

Scott: Deaton? Is there a problem? We’ll be right there.

He hangs up and glances at Stiles, Lydia and Allison.

Alison: Go ahead, I’ll stay with Hannah, keep me posted.

They all nod. My brother gives me a k**s on the head and the three disappear from the cafeteria.

Me: Where are they going?

She shrugs her shoulders, I can see in her face that something’s going on, but I don’t insist, or she’ll snap. We continue chatting through lunch until the school bell rings.

Home after school

I arrive in the kitchen, but I can’t find Mom.

Me: Mom?

Mom: I’m upstairs!

I climb the stairs and find her in one of the two bedrooms, empty when I arrived, which is now virtually identical to my room at my father’s house.

Me: Wow, Mom! How did you do that! It’s just like my room at Dad’s!

Mom: Actually, it’s not from me, your father brought all this stuff in at lunchtime and… he left this.

She hands me a letter, of course. I take it and put it on the desk, without reading it.

Mom: Aren’t you going to read it?

Me: No. He lied to me for thirteen years of my life by taking me away from you. He doesn’t deserve my quick forgiveness.

Mom: Okay, it’s your choice after all.

She gives me a k**s on the head and leaves the room. I look at every corner of the room and rummage through the drawers. All my clothes and things are in their place, as if I’d never been separated from my mother. I take the letter, but before I can read it, Scott enters my room and I put it down.

Scott : Hey! How are you?

Me: Hmm.

I sulk a little. After all, he abandoned me without any explanation.

Scott: Are you mad at me?

Me: No.

Scott: Are you sulking?

Me: Yes.

He smiles.

Scott: You’re going to sulk even if I give you this?

I look up and see a phone in his hands. I jump into his arms, screaming and laughing.

Me: Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank youiiiiii!

He laughs and I take off.

Scott: Actually, I don’t deserve any credit, Alison and Lydia wanted your number and I said you didn’t have one and Lydia bought it for you!

I scream again and jump into his arms. We sit on my bed and talk. Mom must have told him about our father’s “present” because he’s not surprised.

Me: Where did you go anyway?

Scott: To see my boss, Deaton, he had a problem with a patient.

I nod. We talk until I fall asleep and he goes to bed.
