Chapter 1597 Marriage Without Love

Elijah furrowed his brows slightly and crouched in front of her. "Bob said you're getting off at the next port?"

"Yes," Sally replied in her usual icy tone. She didn't want to talk much.

"Where are you headed after getting off?" Elijah continued to inquire.

"Mr. Patterson, does it concern you?" Sally continued to avoid looking at Elijah. "I'd like to be on my own. Can't you go somewhere else?"

"Are you planning to look for Gideon after getting off the ship?" Elijah's handsome features creased slightly. He placed his hands on the armrest of the lounge chair. His grip tightened subtly.

"Do you think I'm incapable without men?" Sally finally looked at Elijah.

Elijah's eyes held clarity. He blinked, then furrowed his brows. "So, you've been upset for the past few days because of this? You believe I care about rumors and gossip?"

"You don't care?" Sally's tone was laced with sarcasm. "Why is your nephew criticizing me when you don't care? Did you say that you waited for me for ten years? I was not even aware of your existence. He just told me I've got a bad reputation. And you, Mr. High and Mighty, with your spotless reputation, think it'd be best if I kept my distance, right?"

Elijah's complexion paled slightly. He seemed visibly angry. "Sally, can you please have a decent conversation with me?"

"I can't!" Sally retorted without a second thought.

Elijah took a few deep breaths, then looked at her earnestly. "Sally, showing someone that they love you and won't abandon you cannot be achieved by continuously pushing them away. I don't want you to distance yourself from me, and I don't want you to keep leaving and returning on your own."

His words struck Sally. Her eyes were filled with tears as she looked at Elijah.

Elijah furrowed his brow once more upon observing her response. He raised his hand. His large palm gently cupped Sally's cheek. "I'm not noble at all..."

Sally was taken aback.

"I merely pulled you out of the pool, held your body, brushed my lips against yours... Even when I am in the presence of the divine or reading sacred texts, impure thoughts of you overwhelm my mind." Although a well-groomed Elijah spoke the words, they deeply shocked Sally.

"What... What are you saying?"

Elijah smiled helplessly, "These aren't empty words. Every word rings true."

Sally tightened her lips. "My reputation is truly terrible, and you..."

"I don't mind." Elijah shook his head. "Ms. Campbell, how about we put all that aside and have a common love affair? You might find that a healthy romantic relationship can make your life comfortable and pleasant."

Sally glanced at Elijah and then averted her gaze again.

"But I don't want to date," Sally said firmly. Then, she mustered her courage and thought. What was the best way to deter a man looking for a fling?

Of course... "I want to get married."

Elijah's expression showed a hint of surprise. "Married?"

A bitter feeling welled up in Sally's heart. Just as she suspected...

"Don't you think you should get to know me better first? What if I seem okay on the surface, but I'm a scoundrel deep down?" Elijah suggested. Sally had already made up her mind.

She believed Elijah was only interested in playing around.

So, she persisted firmly. "I've had enough of romance, especially with Gideon. I just want to get married!"
