Chapter 1295:
? ? ? ? ?
Doreen didn't detect the evasiveness in her voice. Seeing that Roscoe didn't agree to her proposal, she boldly suggested, "How about I come over to your house tonight? We could..."
Roscoe, unable to contain himself any longer, shook her as he walked, replying coldly, “That’s not very convenient.” This was his gentlest way of saying no.
Miguel had been constantly reminding Roscoe that it was crucial that he treated Doreen kindly. Their families' alliance was based on the fusion of interests. Roscoe was not allowed to speak freely and was expected to tolerate Doreen's tantrums at all times.
Miguel had advised Roscoe that the girls were delicate and reserved and that he should pamper Doreen.
Indeed, Doreen was the epitome of daintiness. She complained that her feet and legs hurt after a short walk, and even eating dinner was fraught with complications. Her daintiness was frustrating.
As for Doreen's supposed reserve, Roscoe didn't see it. He understood her overtly flirtatious advances. He simply chose not to respond. He was even repulsed by them.
“What's wrong? Are you busy tonight?” Doreen insisted on asking.
"Yes, I have some business to deal with."
Doreen was annoyed by his rejection but didn't give up. "Okay, then maybe tomorrow night or the day after..."
"I'm sorry. I'll be busy for a while and I don't believe in premarital relationships. I hope you can understand."
Roscoe's response was almost blunt, leaving Doreen feeling humiliated.
Doreen's cheeks turned bright red. After all, she was a rich young lady, accustomed to popularity, but Roscoe always treated her coldly.
“Roscoe, how dare you!” Doreen's anger finally erupted.
His voice was arrogant as he declared, “You are nothing but a lowly bastard, and yet you put yourself up to the task in front of me. Marrying me would be your stroke of luck. You should be thanking me for that. Yet, you dare to display such an attitude! Who do you think you are?”
Roscoe seemed to have anticipated her outburst. Doreen had never been bad-tempered, but she was fragile and weak in front of him, which he found repugnant.
He replied indifferently: “I apologize for that, but you shouldn't degrade yourself.”
Hearing this, Doreen's expression changed and she quickly asked, "What do you mean?"
In a burst of frustration, Doreen lets her words slip out. The charade was tiring her, but deep down, she still cared deeply for Roscoe. The idea that he might want to end their engagement filled her with dread.
Roscoe spoke in a measured voice. “If you think I'm not worthy, don't settle. Maybe you should find someone who meets your requirements.”
“How dare you!” The words escaped Doreen before she could catch them.
Roscoe's suggestion that she look elsewhere ignited a fury in her, leaving her momentarily speechless.
“Oh, this really hurts…” Doreen whispered, awkwardly trying to get away from the tense topic. Publicly changing boyfriends after announcing the wedding date would be scandalous, not to mention humiliating.
Besides, she was in love with Roscoe. If only he could show her a little more tenderness, her anger might have been appeased. A little compromise on his part might smooth everything over. But their estrangement persisted.
With calm detachment, Roscoe declared, "Perhaps it is time to reconsider our commitment."
Doreen started. She hadn't expected him to keep talking about breaking up. Wasn't this the time to reassure her?
“Roscoe, it wasn't always like this between us. “You used to love me very much.” Doreen's voice cracked as she feigned vulnerability, recalling a past that had never been.
