Chapter 1291:
? ? ? ? ?
"No, it wasn't me."
“Humph, that's a shame. Since you’re not willing to talk, I guess I’ll be leaving then,” Vicki announced, her tone disdainful as she prepared to leave.
Nicole quickly reached out and grabbed Vicki's arm, her voice urgent.
“Wait, don't go. Give me a moment to think…”
Nicole thought back and suddenly realized. There had been one instance. Jarrod had behaved strangely that day, insisting that she dressed provocatively and accompanied him to the Kingbel Club to mingle with high-profile guests. It had been a bizarre and degrading experience, meant only to belittle her. The memory of that night still ranked.
Nicole reluctantly admitted, “Yes, there was that time at the Kingbel Club, but it was just that one time, and I didn't really mingle with the guests.”
Vicki's displeasure was evident upon hearing this. It seemed that Jarrod harbored special feelings for Nicole, tolerating a family feud to keep Nicole around. Vicki deduces that Jarrod's decision to have Nicole at the event was motivated by anger.
Jealousy well up in Vicki's heart. Dropping all pretense, she said abruptly, "Since you've done it before, perfect. My uncle owns the Kingbel Club and they're short-staffed. I could get you a job there."
Nicole stood there dumbfounded, her mind blank. “What are you suggesting?”
"I mean you're a hostess. You'll entertain guests and have conversations. It's easy and you get paid," Vicki explained.
The term “hostess” in that context was a polite way of saying prostitute. While it did not include sleeping with clients, all other interactions were expected and, for the right price, even more could be negotiated.
Nicole paled. “I can't stand alcohol and I won't work in a place like that.”
Vicki laughed, covering her mouth with her hand. “You don't think I'm begging you to take the job, do you?”
Nicole knew she wasn't. Vicki's real goal was to degrade her. Yet how could she accept such a demand? She replied firmly, "Miss Hampton, I can't accept that. If you have other conditions, we can discuss them."
“What if I don't have them?” Vicki's tone turned cold.
"If you want Austin to stay healthy, you'd better take the job today. Otherwise, I can't ensure his well-being..." Vicki openly threatened.
Fury gripped Nicole, who clenched her fists as she trembled.
"Miss Hampton, remember who Austin is. He's Jarrod's son."
Nicole questioned Vicki: “Do you really think Jarrod will tolerate your actions?”
It didn't matter, Jarrod was Austin's father. Nicole couldn't believe he would be so cruel as to disregard the life of his own son. Ignoring his son's well-being seemed unimaginable. Even if Jarrod was simply using Austin as a bargaining chip to intimidate her, he should realize that any harm to Austin would drive her to fight him relentlessly.
“Ha ha.” At this, Vicki's laughter grew louder and more dramatic. “Miss Lawrence, you are quite naive. Your son is fragile. A simple fever or the wrong food could end his life. Would I really have to physically intervene?”
Vicki tried to crush Nicole's naivety with her words. Smiling, she added, "Do you really think Jarrod would confront me about something so trivial?"
Vicki's implications were very clear. She had numerous ways to hurt Austin. Even if Jarrod didn't trust in Austin directly, having Austin near Jarrod was enough of an opportunity for her.
He was right. Austin's health was fragile and he couldn't stand any stress. The slightest interference could prove fatal.
