Chapter 1220:

? ? ? ? ?

Loneliness dragged him deeper, like sinking into quicksand.

Nicole herself felt like she could lose her grip on reality. Her thoughts were racing as if her head was going to explode. “Don't you feel worthless? “You hid my mother and found Austin, using them as pawns to control me.”

“Despicable?” Jarrod scoffed coldly. “Maybe I am, but only because you pushed me into it!”

Nicole lowered her head, oblivious to his words.

Jarrod grabbed her chin, forcing her to look at him. “Don't you realize I could crush you like an ant? Yet how did you treat me? You stabbed me and stole papers to lock me up. You tried to kill me. And yet, I've forgiven you, time and time again. While you were cuddling with another man, I couldn't sleep and frankly searched for you. Do you even have a heart, Nicole? Did you ever think of me while you were revealing in those happy moments?”

Jarrod trembled with rage as he spoke. Despite everything, he still couldn't force her to obey. He fixed his intense gaze on her, as if he wanted to absorb her completely. He loved and hated her simultaneously, torn by his emotions.

“I hate you… I hate you…” Nicole sobbed, her voice muffled.

Jarrod pulled Nicole into his arms, and she immediately screamed, “Don't touch me! Don't touch me. “Don’t touch me.”

She hit his chest with all her might, but her blows seemed like a soft rain, barely perceptible.

With determination, Jarrod pulled her into his arms, holding her tightly, almost breaking her delicate frame.

A tear rolled down Jarrod's cheek, wetting his eyelashes. “I hate you too, Nicole. As much as you hate me. But I can't help it…”

Why couldn't he just submit? Was it too much to ask? If he didn't stand firm, she would avoid him like the plague. If he didn't act despicably, she would leave for good.

Jarrod leaned down, pressing his lips roughly against hers. For him, possession was enough, even if love was lacking.

Nicole struggled to pull away, tears streaming down her face like a river breaking through her dam. “Jarrod, don’t touch me… not here.”

This scene was a flashback to the beginning, in his father's hospital room, when Jarrod had acted with the same cruelty. He ignored his parents, decency and humanity, acting like an animal.

Jarrod looked at the shaking Nicole and realized he couldn't go on. I picked her up and carried her out of the hospital room.

Once inside the car, Nicole curled up in a corner, sobbing as if she was trying to cry out every last tear she had. If it were just Austin, maybe she could handle it.

But he had to think of his mother. She would do anything to protect them, even if it cost her her life. Wasn't fate cruel? How could it be so unfair to her?

Jarrod took Nicole back to the Oasis apartment, and she felt like she was back in a cage.

Nicole stood hesitantly in the doorway, unable to move forward.

Jarrod looked back and his lips curled into a sneer. “What's wrong with you? Do you think the place you once lived in is dirty?”

Nicole tried to steel herself, but the thought of going terrified her. It meant continuing her complicated, tangled relationship with Jarrod. She stared at him from the doorway and said coldly, “I want to see Austin. “He’s not feeling well.”

Jarrod's expression turned icy. “You know it's not okay? So you’ve been hiding it out there for so long?”

Jarrod had been too worried with searching for Nicole to have Austin checked on her since his return.

Jarrod had no strong feelings for Austin. Jarrod's father had ruled with an iron fist, and affection in the Schultz family was always in short supply.

So Jarrod resorted to his father's strict rules, not knowing how normal families worked. Of course, he wouldn't use a belt for small mistakes like his father had done. Austin seemed so delicate that even a belt could prove fatal.
