The night had passed slowly, perhaps too much. I had dozed off on the couch a few times, only to be woken up by one of the children to feed them.

May and Nate had been sleeping all night, watched on sight by my mother and Maya’s father. Everyone was terrified of all that stress and what it would cause the child; therefore, Maya’s father kept checking on her and was tempted to call the gynaecologist. We were all walking a tightrope.

At that moment it was late morning, Axel had been moved to the new family home and, shortly thereafter, Lucas would go.

Nate had left the room ten minutes earlier, he had just poured himself a cup of coffee and sat on the couch without saying a word. Maya was completely cooped up in her room and didn’t want to go out or see anyone.

I was worried, it wasn’t good for either of them to be in that state, but I didn’t know how to behave, what to do to help them, it was a s**t situation and nobody could make them feel better at the moment.

I made sandwiches for Maya and went in front of my brother, sat on the coffee table and looked at him.

“Maya needs to eat, it’s not good for her to be so fasting, I’m sure she would listen to you more than me, in the meantime I can call Lucas and see if he has news,” I said as gently as possible.

Nate didn’t answer, he just picked up the plate and got up, and then went into the bedroom and closed the door behind him.

I felt my heart break but I didn’t give in, even though I wanted to burst into tears just to see them. I took my cell phone and called Lucas.

Nate

“Maya needs to eat, it’s not good for her to be so fasting, I’m sure she would listen to you more than me, in the meantime I can call Lucas and see if she has news,” my sister said softly.

I didn’t answer, I got up and took the plate and then I went into our bedroom and closed the door behind me.

Maya was still lying in bed, the tents were wide open and let in the sun’s rays that morning.

Maya looked towards the window and I approached her, crouching next to the bed while she stared at the window, her hands under her head to support herself. Her eyes were still reddened and her face was streaked with tears.

Maya had woken up crying inconsolably, that morning worse than the night before, her hair had stuck to her wet cheeks and her nose was plugged, occasionally she pulled up her nose and I could feel the tension that came from her.

I put the plate on the bedside table and looked at her.

“You must eat, mon amour” I said, stroking her cheek.

Maya sighed and shook her head.

“Please, it’s not good to starve,” I said.

I hated forcing her to do what she didn’t want to do, and I had a tight stomach, too, and I understood her, but it wasn’t just her, I was worried about the baby, and Maya couldn’t fast for that long.

Maya shook her head again.

“If not for you, do it for the baby, please,” I said again.

Maya sighed and pulled herself up, sitting with her legs crossed. I put the plate on her legs and sat down next to her. Maya took a sandwich and took a bite, and began to chew slowly as I saw that she was trying not to cry again.

I surrounded her shoulders with one arm and she rested her head on my shoulder as she continued to eat hard. I kissed her on the head.

“We’ll get him back,” I said.

“When?” she answered sobbing, “He can’t stay away from me, from us, he needs to be with his parents. Without us, he does not eat, does not sleep, does nothing”

“Shhh” I hugged her and put my chin on her head, “It’ll be okay.”

She sobbed again, then she g*****d, I looked at her and immediately got up to take the bucket by the door and put it in front of her. Maya immediately regurgitated, uttering choked g****s as she emptied her stomach into the bucket. I pulled her hair back and stroked her back until she stopped spitting.

Once finished, I pushed the bucket away from her and put it on the ground while she put the plate on the bedside table.

I got up and took the vitamins from above the dresser, and then passed her one. Maya reluctantly sent her down with water, then threw herself back into bed and closed her eyes.

“Get some sleep,” I said, but she shook her head.

I sighed and took the bucket and then I left the room and closed the door behind me. I couldn’t look at her like that, but I didn’t know what to do first, I could barely stand.

Lucas

Zeke met me outside of the foster home that Axel was in. The house was small and was located in a residential neighbourhood and was a small two-storey house with a yellow painted facade. The lawyer had parked the car not far from the house and was waiting for me with my arms folded and my a*s resting on his car.

I approached him and he handed me a badge with a letter written by one of the judges they knew.

“I can’t get in, they can’t refuse you in this, they can’t kick you out. Social workers have no power, and you can stay as long as you want. The house is run by two women and they take care of children of any age. Do what you can” instructed me.

I nodded and took everything he gave me to greet him and go to the entrance of the house. I placed my shoulder strap on my shoulder as I walked through the front garden and then up the steps to the porch.

From the house came cries together with a desperate cry, and I already knew to whom that cry belonged and my heart cried with him.
