Let Me Love You Again -
Chapter 64
Nate
I pushed the cart between the lanes while Axel tried to take off from my hand the phone where I was looking for the list Maya had made for me.
That day I was off work and I went to pick up Axel at my mother’s house. Maya had class late, so I would take care of the dinner, and since we didn’t have anything in the fridge, I had to go and do the same.
That had been our routine for weeks.
Axel spent a day at home with my parents and one with Maya’s parents, he certainly didn’t stay alone for long. Sometimes he even stayed with Jess, who was on forced maternity leave, not that she complained or anything. She was complaining all the time about bombing everyone in the office who handled her open cases. She was a f*****g control freak who could blow anyone away.
After our wedding, Maya and I were living in what looked like a bubble. I don’t think I’ve ever been so happy in my life, so full.
I would wake up every morning with my arms around the woman I loved. I was spending the weekend with my baby, and Axel was growing up so fast. Every day that went by he started to learn more and more words, most of them were bad words learned by me, but sometimes he used sweet words towards Maya.
Like the day before. After he had pulled himself on his feet and held himself up on the coffee table, he had grabbed the tablecloth and pulled it, dropping the crystal vase of Maya’s mother and destroying it in a thousand pieces and, when Maya was enraged, Axel had told her I love you, or rather mumbled those words and at that moment Maya had completely melted and had forgotten any vase shattered on the floor.
As much as Axel didn’t have my b***d, over time he had acquired the same behaviors as I did and he knew how to deal with his mother the same way I did. I was convinced that with the passage of time he would become a real Latin lover and I was ready to be proud of him.
“Dada,” Axel said, stretching his hand to pick up the phone.
“No no,” I said, trying to warn him, and pushing the phone away, “Pasta,” I said, reading the message.
“Mom wants pasta,” I said, looking at Axel, who clapped his hands cheerfully while laughing.
I went to the pasta department and I took a few packages of pasta and put them in the cart then I went to the cereal department. I stopped in front of some boxes and saw Axel grab a box and throw it in the cart.
I laughed and took another pack, making him happy.
I was still wandering around that ward when the phone rang and Maya’s smiling face appeared on the screen with Axel in her arms. I immediately answered with joy.
“Is my beautiful love back?” I asked as soon as I answered.
“Mmmmh, to what do I owe so much cheer?” Maya replied and heard in the background the sound of some doors closing.
“I can’t be happy?” I asked doubtfully.
“Mmmmh”
“Mama!” Axel suddenly shouted and heard Maya laughing at the other end.
“Can you buy me something else?” he asked later.
“I’d buy you the world if I had the chance,” I answered as seriously as I could. Maya laughed and told me what else she needed.
“Come home soon, I’ll wait for you,” he said, still laughing.
“Naked,” I added before closing the call.
Without realizing it I slammed the cart against someone and immediately looked up to apologize.
“I’m sorry,” I said looking at the person in front of me and I got stuck.
I held the handle of the cart tightly, trying to stop myself from showing my emotions. The man looked at me and frowned.
“It doesn’t matter,” he said, and I nodded at him before trying to push the cart, but his gaze shifted to Axel reaching out to another box on the shelf.
I saw him tighten his eyes and freeze and I moved immediately pushing the cart and passing it while Axel said “Dada!” reproachfully.
I turned around in the other lane and I ran towards the speakers, I don’t think I’ve ever been faster in my life. I paid quickly and left the supermarket in a fury, my heart threatening to explode furiously in my chest.
Maya
I came home when the sky had turned dark and found the apartment empty. I put my things in the hallway and walked to the kitchen while typing in my handsome husband’s number.
Nate answered me that it was very, maybe too cheerful and my heart was pounding with the knowledge that it was our life that made it so joyous and I would do anything to keep it that way.
While I was waiting for my men, I took the books and started studying on the table, arranging and preparing things for the next day.
Studying medicine had always been my dream, and even though I never admitted it to anyone but Nate, finally being back in the books gave me a sense of fullness. I couldn’t wait to go to class every day, to deepen my knowledge, and to get closer and closer to my goal, and every day that passed I couldn’t help but love Nate even more for making sure to carry on this dream of mine. And I will always do everything to show how much I loved him, how much I loved our life together and our family.
I shook my head and continued to study, going ahead of pages and pages without realizing the time that flowed quickly and the sky, outside the window, had now darkened.
When I began to struggle with the view, I lifted my head from the book and realized that it had been more than an hour and that the room was now in the shadows so I went to turn on the light switch and, just at that moment, my phone rang.
I took it in my hand as I poured myself a glass of water and saw that I didn’t have the number saved.
I frowned and sent it to voice mail. I certainly didn’t want any publicity to disturb my study bubble at that time.
I went back to the books and I went back to study but the phone started to ring again and I sent it back to voice mail. Again a third and a fourth. When I got tired I put the Do Not Disturb mode, and I left the phone on the table.
I didn’t know how long I was on the books but only got up when the door to the apartment opened and Axel’s cheerful voice didn’t catch up with me.
I closed the book leaving the pencil inside, so as to keep the mark, and immediately went to the entrance where Axel laughed and jumped cheerfully in the stroller.
“Mama!” he shouted as soon as he saw me, pushing himself out of the stroller.
“Sooner or later, he’s gonna run away,” Nate said, closing the door.
I laughed and leaned toward Axel. I freed him and filled him with k****s, making him laugh cheerfully. As soon as he touched the floor with his feet, he freed himself from my grip and began crawling furiously throughout the apartment, also trying to pull himself up whenever he had the chance.
I stood and looked at my handsome man who had suddenly turned dark. I wrapped her arms around his neck, my fingers in his hair, and gave him a loud k**s on the lips.
“How is my beautiful husband that I can’t stop thinking about?” I chirp, making sweet eyes at him.
Nate laughed and kissed me again “Who should you think about?”
“Absolutely nobody,” I said and kissed him.
At that moment the house phone also started ringing and I snorted loudly. Nate did to come off but I pulled it back to me.
“Let it play, it’ll go to voice mail, now I just want to focus on us,” I said looking him in the eye.
Nate smiled mischievously and grabbed my l*p with his teeth, causing me to g***n. At that moment the machine went to voice-mail and the resulting voice completely immobilized my body. Freezing me from head to toe just as Nate froze.
“Hey, Maya, uh…”
