Let Me Love You Again -
Chapter 56
Maya
We came home, Axel had completely collapsed, knocked out after a busy day full of action for his little body. He slept blissfully in Nate’s arms, his head resting on his shoulder, and his arms were dangling.
I put the keys in the bowl next to the door and took off my heel shoes, making a m**n of pleasure when my feet were finally free.
“Shall we order a pizza?” Nate said softly.
“That’s great, I don’t think I want to cook,” I said as I went over to the couch and threw myself on it.
“I’m putting Axel to bed”.
I took my phone out of my jeans pocket and called the pizzeria, ordered two pizzas for both of us, and turned on the TV.
I heard Nate talking in the other room, “I thought you were tired.”
“Dada,” Axel replied.
“Don’t you feel sleepy?”
“Dada”
“I’d like to put your mother in bed, so sleep.”
“Dada”, it looked like Axel was scolding him.
“All right, let’s take a bath,” Nate almost defeated.
“Dada!” Axel chirped cheerfully.
I laughed and I kept going through the channels “Do you need help?” I shouted when I saw him go to the bathroom.
“No no no, Axel wants to take a bath so let’s take a bath”
“You know you can’t take a bath with him forever, right?” I asked.
“Hey!” Nate complained as he looked at me in makeup, “Don’t you dare anymore!” he said, feigning insult and locking himself in the bathroom.
I laughed and I got up from the couch to go and check the mail of the past few days that I had not yet had a chance to look at. I took the letters and started browsing them, most of them were advertisements until I stuck.
I looked at the frowning letter as the words were imprinted in my mind. The med school.
Why was there a letter from medical school?
I laid down all the others and immediately opened the letter and then read the contents.
Dear Miss Sheppar,
we took care of your request and, after a careful review of your school curriculum, we made the decision to accept your application for enrollment at our school.
We look forward to starting your school career.
Best regards
The rector
My heart stopped and my breath cut in my throat as I continued to read the words of the letter. It was a medical school in Philadelphia, but I didn’t send any questions, I didn’t make any requests, and yet it couldn’t be a mistake. There was my name, with all the documentation to complete the registration.
I stood still staring at the letter for what seemed like an eternity. I noticed only sporadically Nate coming out of the bathroom with a towel around his waist and coming towards me.
“The door,” he said.
I raised my head and looked at him frowning.
“Maya the door,” he repeated, and it was only at that moment that I noticed the intercom ringing.
I shook my head and walked towards the door, not understanding anything.
“My wallet is in my jacket!” Nate said as he walked towards the kitchen.
I looked at him for a moment, the towel tied around his waist, wet hair, holding Axel, wrapped in his towel with the dinosaurs with the hood on his head.
I took Nate’s wallet and I opened the door, I paid the pizza delivery guy and I closed the door, and then I went to the kitchen with the pizzas in my hand. I put them on the table while Nate prepared Axel’s dinner, who was comfortably seated in his table seat.
I took two plates and sat down, completely silent as my mind whirled with ideas.
Medical school? I had a bite in my stomach and I had to admit that the idea turned me on quite a bit. I had always dreamed of studying medicine and being able to open my own pediatric office, but in high school, they didn’t accept my request and I turned to nurse then, when I finally got accepted, I got pregnant.
It seemed to me that fate didn’t want me to study medicine, so I didn’t think about it anymore, I didn’t have time. I had to look after my son, work, and take care of the house. What now?
I didn’t know if I wanted to continue medicine. In the end, I had a job. Not everyone was lucky enough to find one so quickly after graduation. I had a beautiful child and a beautiful boyfriend who would soon become my husband. I could not ask for more and yet… just the idea of being able to pick up where I left off, the idea of finally being able to fulfill my dream gave me a thrill of excitement all over my body.
“Are you listening to me?” Nate snapped his fingers in front of me and I blinked several times, realizing I was totally alienated from everything.
I looked at him for a moment and shook my head.
“What is it?” he scowled.
“Nothing,” I answered, biting into the pizza.
“It doesn’t look like nothing.”
I shook my head and turned to Axel, who had his eyes closed while chewing on the pizza ledge, his head dangling.
“It’s better if I dry him and put him to bed,” I said, getting up.
I took Axel and took him to his room, dressed him quickly while he was completely sleepy. I dried his hair quickly, and by the time I was done, he was completely gone. I put him in his crib and he covered him up pretty good before I went to the salon where Nate was sitting on the couch with the computer on his lap while he was writing frantically on the keyboard.
I sat next to him and took all the medical school documentation, sighing loudly to get his attention.
Nate didn’t get upset at all and kept working, so I sighed again but nothing. I did it again and again I didn’t get any results so I kicked him in the ribs.
“s**t,” Nate said breathlessly, taking his hand where I had hit him, “What?!” he blurted, looking at me.
“Can’t you see I’m trying to get attention?”
“I see it, mon amour, just as you see that I’m trying to do things before I sleep with you and give you all the attention you need,” Nate replied, looking back at the screen.
“I’m not talking about s*x, dummy!” I gave him another kick in the ribs but this time he was quicker and grabbed my foot, stopping him a few inches from him.
He sighed and closed the computer and then placed it on the coffee table in front of the sofa.
“What makes you sigh like that? Apart from my c**k, of course.”
I rolled my eyes and pull up the whole “Do you know what this is?”
“No?”
“A letter of admission to medical school in Philadelphia,” I said, putting the file on my thighs and looking at it.
“Have you been admitted?”
I nodded, “But I didn’t ask any questions.”
“I know it”
“Do you know that?”
“Yes, because I made it,” he replied with nonchalance.
I looked at him frowning, “What?” I asked with a string of my voice.
“A couple of months ago, I saw the brochure in the bedroom so I sent the application on your behalf, had Andrew’s department chief write a letter of recommendation, and I sent it.”
“Why?”
“Because it’s your dream.”
“But I can’t,” I said, shaking my head.
“Why?”
“Nate, I have a job, a house, and a kid to take care of, no matter how much I want to continue med school, I can’t just drop everything, you know!”
“You have me” I looked him in the eye “Maya” he grabbed me and made me sit on top of him “Do not give up your dreams, you are no longer alone, you have me. f**k, we will get married and the only thing I would like to see more in the world, besides you with a wedding ring on your finger, is your dream come true. We can do it together. You can reduce your hospital hours and start attending classes, calmly. In the meantime, I can take care of Axel when you’re not there or we can leave it to your mother or mine, it won’t be that hard. Then we live together, you won’t have to work your a*s off to pay for everything, we’ll pay together if you stop being proud.”
“Do not give up your dreams, we will find a solution and you know why?” He said to me as he stroked my cheek, “Because we’re together and everything else doesn’t matter until we’re together, everything will be fine.”
“Would you really do that? Would you change your routine for me? Do You know I’m terribly hysterical when I’m under stress?”
“I’d do anything for you,” he replied with confidence.
My eyes filled with tears and my heart burst with joy and love for this man who, in a short time, was turning all my dreams into reality.
I closed my eyes and put my forehead to hers, breathing deeply.
