Nate

I watched my mother push my father towards the gigantic cake she had prepared for him, almost taller than him. People around sang many good wishes.

My mother loved to party, especially if it was my father. She loved to cuddle and celebrate with him.

I observed them as I held Axel in my arms. The baby fell asleep ten minutes ago after receiving attention from everyone.

I held him in my arms and he had his head on my shoulder and his arms left loose. I took off my jacket and kept it on his shoulders to keep him from getting cold. Next to me was Maya standing with her arm tucked into mine and her head resting on my shoulder as she watched my parents.

I turned my face and kissed her head, rubbing my nose in her hair.

I felt as at peace as before as if I had finally found my place in the world. Like I was created exactly for these two people in my arms. I would have gone over anyone to protect them, I didn’t care about anything else.

My father blew out the candles and then gave a passionate k**s to my mother, I g*****d disgusted, and closed my eyes.

“Don’t complain that you did worse,” Maya whispered in my ear as she caressed my arm.

“Wait till we get home and see how you beg me to shut your mouth,” I said seriously.

Maya laughed and looked at Axel who moved gently in my arms, he didn’t wake up, turned his head, and sunk his nose into the recess of my neck as he gently sucked the pacifier.

“Put him in the stroller,” Maya said, gently stroking his head.

“I’m fine,” I said, settling down in the chair and taking care of the baby.

Maya sighed and perched on me. I looked up and I found Jess staring at me, her eyes pointed at Axel, the look was strange, then she looked up and gave me a faint smile, and then she looked back at our parents.

I frowned at the dubious “I think my sister is premeditating my murder,” I told Maya terrified.

“Why?” she asked, laughing.

“She just smiled at me, I think it’s the smile of death,” I said, looking at Maya.

“You’re always pessimistic!” she slapped me on the shoulder, being careful not to wake Axel “She’s happy for you. She’s just having a hard time,” Maya said.

“Why do you all keep saying that?”

“Because that’s what it is, Nate,” Maya seriously said, “The important thing is that we’ve made it clear,” Maya retorted, crouching against me again.

I relaxed and inhaled its scent as everyone around us was cheerful and singing happily. I closed my eyes happy and fulfilled.

“Nate” I opened my eyes and I looked at my sister in front of me.

Jess looked at me, standing in front of me, her hands crossed behind her back and her head bent to the side.

I looked at her and I shut my eyes, “Go back Satan!” I suddenly exclaimed, making Maya jump beside me.

My sister rolled her eyes.

Nate

I watched my mother push my father towards the gigantic cake she had prepared for him, almost taller than him. People around sang many good wishes.

“Can you be more of a d**k than that?!” Maya cried in despair.

“I’m used to it May May, now I’m passing the ball to you,” Jess replied.

“I’m not a ball,” I replied.

“You’re a very pretty ball,” Maya replied, kissing me on the cheek.

“Just pretty?” I scowled.

Maya approached my ear, her warm breath tickled my skin, “When we get home, I’ll show you,” she whispered.

“God, this is unbearable,” Jess snorted, “Can I talk to my brother alone, or are you one entity now?”

“When we get home, we’ll be one,” Maya said, getting up.

Jess moved, allowing Maya to take Axel and leave us alone. Jess sat next to me, while I watched my girlfriend go to Lucas and Devon.

“You’re so obvious,” Jess said next to me.

I looked back at Jess, who was perched on the chair with her arms crossed over her chest, one leg, wrapped in long trousers, crossed over the other, her blond hair waving behind her shoulders.

“Maybe I should have known from the beginning that you were lost for May,” my sister continued.

I looked at her, her face was pale, even though her cheeks were flushed, and her features were tired, more tired than usual.

“Needless to say, if you make her suffer for one second, I’ll cut your balls off,” she added, looking serious.

“Before I hurt her, I’d cut off my d**k,” I said as seriously.

“I hope you do. Despite not being the happiest person on the news, I’m happy for you big brother. It’s about time you put your head straight and built yourself a family, even if you didn’t do any work, you found your wife and son in one fell swoop.”

Smiled and I looked back at Maya holding Axel while she hung with her body.

“At least you can mature a little bit and stop being the usual jerk,” Jess sighed.

“Why does everyone tell me you’re having a shitty time?” I suddenly asked.

Jess stiffened and looked at him, “I don’t want to talk about it, please. I’ve already had too many mental breakdowns during the day, I don’t need one more”

“I might be offended that you’re hiding things from me.”

“It’s not like that, I just don’t want to talk about it because there’s nothing to say. It’ll be over soon enough,” Jess sighed and leaned into the chair.

I didn’t say anything, I just turned my head and looked at my parents, but then I looked at my sister out of the corner of my eye. I saw her looking down at Maya, while a hand was resting on her abdomen and gently caressing it.

Was Jess, by any chance…?

Why didn’t she want to talk about it? What was going on?

I put my hand on my forehead and I frowned, my head hurt. She wouldn’t talk about it. Did that mean something was wrong?

“Whatever’s going on with you, you can talk to me about it, and if it’s about Andrew, if anything goes wrong with him, just say the word and I’ll cut his balls off,” I said sure as hell.

Jess ran away with a laugh but said nothing “Thank you” she just whispered in a sweet voice.

Despite our differences, I loved my sister. It was the b***d of my b***d and I would have protected it against everything and everyone, even if it was a friend of mine, indeed, even more, if it was a friend of mine. Whoever hurt Jess was gonna turn on me and pay for it.

I sighed and looked back at my parents hugging and looking at each other with love. Jess sighed and leaned on my shoulder with her head and I rested mine on hers. Together we watched our parents dance and laugh together.

“Do you think we’ll ever be like that with our halves?” dreamy Jess said.

“I hope so,” I sighed.

At that moment our parents looked into each other’s eyes before giving each other a passionate k**s that made my skin crawl.

Jess and I stood up straight and together “Bleah,” we said disgustedly.

“My God, they’re unbearable,” Jess said.

“I feel like throwing up,” I said at the same time.

We both got up and I went to Maya, hugging her from behind and resting my chin on her shoulder. In her arms, she held Axel who blissfully snuggled on her chest. As I approached Maya, Axel raised his head and looked at me with his sleepy eyes.

Andrew and Jess approached us. Andrew sat down next to Lucas and immediately drew Jess to him and made her sit on his lap, surrounding her pelvis with one arm as he smiled cheerfully.

There didn’t seem to be any problems between them. But something was wrong. I knew Jess wasn’t entirely happy, but Andrew wasn’t the problem, it was something else.

I was distracted by two little hands towards me. I looked down and saw Axel pushing into his mother’s arms and coming towards me, his arms outstretched and his blue eyes drowsy.

“Dada” he mumbled.

I froze, as Maya did. Axel kept reaching out to me as I looked at him with my eyes wide open.

Maya looked at me, her eyes almost indecipherable, and then moved it back to her son.

“Dada” Axel repeated, pulling towards me.

I immediately took it and placed him on my chest, wrapped him with my arms, and stuck my nose in his blond hair, hiding my face so as to prevent others from reading the swirl of emotions that were threatening to make me break my legs, I sighed and gave my back to the others, while Axel rested his head on my chest and crouched in my arms, relaxing immediately.
