Let Me Love You Again -
Chapter 112
It was nine o’clock in the evening when I finally arrived at the club decided. I spent the free hours on the phone with Maya while she talked excitedly about the things she had bought for the baby and what her mother and Jess had given her.
Maya had been talking nonstop about her day from the moment she opened her eyes to the moment I called her, the same way Axel did when he picked up the phone and I had been listening to them for hours, I nearly forget all about the appointment with my colleagues who had bothered to storm me with messages.
So now I was there, opening the door, with my hair still a little damp from the shower I had done, and a hand in a pocket of my pants.
I sighed when the warm air of the restaurant caught up with me and I looked for my companions for that evening, finding them all sitting around a table.
I saw Zeke shamelessly hitting on Becka as she stared bored at the drink in front of her, her chin resting on her hand.
I approached and sat next to her with a puff.
“Finally man! I thought you were gonna stand us up!” Lopez commented.
“I was on the phone,” I excused myself.
I could feel Becka’s eyes pointed at me as I called the waiter and ordered a whiskey.
“So? What did I miss?” I asked, my arms folded across the table.
“Zeke here told me some anecdotes about his life,” Becka commented.
“I saw you very interested in fact” I replied ironically.
“Who wouldn’t be?” said Zeke and I laughed, “Too bad we’ll be gone in three days, I’d need a whole week to tell her everything,” he winked at Becka and she rolled her eyes.
“You know how to get a woman,” I commented as the waiter laid my glass on the table.
“I’m just trying to find the woman of my life!” Zeke said, raising his hands, “Ever since you and Chris discovered the pleasure of having one partner, you’ve stood me up all the time, and I have to go out with Lopez who’s afraid to even look at a woman!”
“You know I can hear you?” Lopez commented.
“You know I don’t care? You’re not much use as a wingman,” Zeke said.
“Forgive me if I don’t like the way you treat women!”
“Shut up!” Zeke threw some chips at Lopez, “You make me a bad publicist!” he complained and I laughed.
They began to poke each other then they both got distracted when the track was opened and the band began to play, prompting many women to take to the field and start dancing nonstop.
They both snapped and dreamily looked at the ladies on the track.
“Did you eat?” Becka asked me away from the terrible spectacle that Zeke and Lopez were showing, only the drool was missing.
“Huh?” I asked confused looking at her.
“I said, have you eaten?” she asked again.
I looked at her for a second and then I thought, and then I shook my head. I was so caught up in Axel and Maya’s conversations that I completely forgot to eat, but I didn’t care, I didn’t feel hungry.
“You want me to order you something?” Becka asked.
“Nah, I’m fine so don’t worry,” I said, drinking some of my whiskey.
“How do you feel after solving this case in record time?”
“Lighter, as if a weight had been lifted from my shoulders”
“It was a very difficult case, I didn’t understand anything about what happened so I guess what it was like to have to try to solve and please everyone,” Becka said, turning the straw in the glass “I always knew you’d be a good lawyer. Do you remember when you attended meetings with your father? You were always careful to listen to everything without being noticed. You didn’t want to give him satisfaction and let him know you liked him”
“I would have chosen this path even without my father’s forced push,” I said, shaking my head.
“But you would have wasted time being a d**k for years before you made that choice. But look at you now. You are twenty-six years old, you have a good career, a good future ahead of you and in a few years you will take the reins of one of the most important law firms in the city if not the state”
“I won’t be the only one taking the reins. Jess will be next to me. She deserves it too,” I said.
“Your father will be proud of his children”
“He doesn’t show it very often. He just gives us orders all day,” I said, laughing.
“He wouldn’t be a parent if he wasn’t a stick up in your a*s the whole time,” she laughed.
We stood in silence for a while as Zeke and Lopez got up and threw themselves on the track, watched them rub themselves without restraint against women and shook their heads.
“Until a few minutes ago, he was ready to swear eternal love to me,” Becka said, frowning as she looked at them.
“Jealous?” I asked, laughing.
“About him? Never. It’s not him I care about,” Becka commented.
“He’s not the type to settle down, even if he says he wants to, he likes hanging around from skirt to skirt too much. I can’t think I was like him either.”
“When you were 17, you were like him, and I liked the headless Nate who was the first to throw himself into the slaughterhouse. But this Nate, the more mature, serious one, is my favourite,” Becka said, and she felt her approach.
I looked over at her, she put a hand on my forearm and looked at me.
“Do you think if we hadn’t lost touch, something different would have happened between you and me?”
“Why are you asking me that?”
“Because it’s something I’ve always wondered about,” she sighed, “It’s a doubt that has always haunted me, like a regret of what we might have been if we hadn’t lost sight of each other. Maybe we would both be different and maybe we would have built something together and sometimes I wonder if I missed the person who was really made for me”
I frowned as she spoke, not understanding exactly what she was saying until I found her face next to mine and her lips inches away from mine.
