Let Me Love You Again
Chapter 106

Nate

It had been two weeks, for two weeks I had done nothing but immerse myself completely in the work, trying at all costs to finish it as soon as possible. When I was not working I complained about the distance and spent my time on the phone with my wonderful wife and son. Axel spent at least an hour talking to me on the phone on a video call, telling me in his language everything he did in the day.

I could have spent hours listening to him talk even though I didn’t understand anything and he would have been quietly talking for hours, I watched him with Maya’s cell phone in my hand, sitting on his bed, talking, talking, talking. He reminded me so much of Maya when she was little, she could talk for hours without ever getting tired and I remember that many times Jess when she invited Maya to a sleepover, fell asleep while she was talking until late at night. I remember walking past my sister’s room and finding her talking, sitting on the bed, so I went in and I sat in front of her and we talked for hours until we both collapsed and I woke up the next day in my bed.

Even with Maya, already a child, I could listen to her for hours. Every time she spoke, I was enchanted and I was just a child. Maybe the seven-year-old me already knew how important she was in my life.

Axel would always fall asleep while he was talking to me so I would spend the next few hours talking to Maya, or not talking. She’d show me her tummy, and then we’d have great s*x call videos.

My coworkers used to call me a p***y for the time I spent on the phone and how, every night, I snubbed them when they went out to some club. They could call me whatever they wanted as far as I was concerned, I didn’t care, I wouldn’t waste my time with my family because they were prejudiced.

It was lunchtime and we were locked in the conference room of the Fisher Agency with my colleagues, including Zeke.

“I think it’s time to get off and go to lunch, I’m starving,” Zeke commented.

“We can also order at the deli and have it brought here so we don’t lose track of the case,” I commented.

“My God you’re so annoying” Lopez commented.

I rolled my eyes and snorted, “We’re here to work, not to f**k around,” I said.

“The tension of the work must be loosened somehow,” he winked at me and stood up.

I stretched myself in the chair and felt a latch on my back “I prefer to stay here” I announced.

“You’ve become a woman” made fun of my colleagues and then got out of the chair.

I shook my head and went back to studying the papers while they left me completely alone. I booked lunch and checked my phone to see if there was any message from Maya, and it actually there was. She had another ultrasound today, and she was probably giving me the news. I opened our chat and I saw that she had sent me the photo of the ultrasound with her comment below.

It looks like she’s giving the okay with her hand!

I looked closely at the ultrasound, and I could see the little girl’s raised hand, and it looked like she had her thumbs up as if to reassure everyone that she was okay.

Does she move?

I immediately asked, from the latest news that she had given me she had not yet moved, it seemed that our little girl had no desire at all to be heard.

Lightly.

Maya answered and immediately I stood at attention.

Really?!

I thought I felt a movement last night, but it was light, and today during the ultrasound, she moved. The gynaecologist says she’s very lazy.

I wonder where he gets it from.

I commented to myself, but I couldn’t hide the excitement of knowing that she had moved for the first time, as well as an absolute sadness because I was missing it. I had an uncontrolled urge to put my ear on Maya’s belly and listen to Maya’s breath, and wait for some movement of our baby.

Certainly not from me.

It was her answer. I was going to type to answer when I heard a voice.

“Nathaniel Dare, how long has it been?” I looked up to see a woman.

Her red hair was bobbed up to her shoulders, her lips were red and pulled in a sweet smile, her green eyes shone brightly, and her nose had a thick frame of glasses but they gave her an intellectual air. The woman wore a white shirt tucked inside a tight skirt and high waist, long legs were bare and her feet had a pair of shoes with heels. She was leaning against the door frame on her side, and she had files in her hand that she held under her arm.

I leaned back and looked at her well, I seemed to know her but I didn’t really remember where I had met her.

I frowned and looked at her strangely.

“Don’t you remember me?” said entering the conference room “I might feel offended” she moved the chair in front of me and sat down, dropping the rows she had in her hand on the table then she put an elbow and her head on her hand as she looked at me.

I raised an eyebrow and looked at her without saying a word.

“If I told you,” she said, “Run Dare, take it, hide the f*****g joint, or I punch you?”

I looked up, “Becka?” I asked, surprised.

“The one and only!” she exclaimed, “You are well Dare! How many years have passed? Ten?”

“Nine,” I said, looking at her.

I remembered very well Becka Fisher, my father’s client’s daughter. I also remembered everything we had been through together.
