Even in his sleep, he had his mask on, which made it impossible for Rachel to tell whether he was truly asleep.

Suddenly, her dry throat itched, triggering a cough.

She hurriedly covered her mouth, stifling the sound as it might disturb Alberto’s sleep.

Unlike what Rachel thought, Alberto hadn’t fallen asleep yet.

His eyes shot open when he heard her cough, but he didn’t sit up or ask what was wrong because he was afraid it would startle her.

He remained on the floor, staring at the ceiling, his eyes a cloud of deep thoughts.

Rachel called out one more time, “Alberto Gibson, are you asleep?”

It was the first time Rachel had addressed him in his full name.

“Can’t sleep?” Alberto finally spoke, his deep and tone piercing through the quiet of the night.

Rachel coughed a couple more times, either startled by his sudden reply or due to her dry throat.

“Uh, yeah.

I just can’t fall asleep.

Probably because I’m not in my bed.”

“There’s warm water on the bedside table.

If your throat is bothering you, drink some to soothe it,” Alberto suggested.

Rachel looked at the bedside table and found a thermos flask.

Since they were the only ones in the villa, no one could have prepared it other than Alberto.

His thoughtfulness inexplicably warmed her heart.

Rachel unscrewed the thermos flask and took a few sips.

The water was warm enough to soothe the dryness in her throat, giving her so much relief.

“Thank you,” Rachel said, settling back to bed.

Alberto didn’t respond.

Silence filled the air again.

The only thing they could hear was the chirping of the insects outside.

Rachel started to feel uneasy.

If they didn’t fill the silence soon, it would become so awkward that she might develop insomnia.

After a moment of hesitation, she spoke again.

“Can’t you sleep either?”

“I can’t,” Alberto said after a few strained seconds.

“So you can’t sleep either when it’s not your bed?”

“Uh-huh.”

The conversation was short-lived.

Rachel tried to come up with other topics they could talk about, but none came to mind.

Alberto turned his head to the foot of the bed.

Under the dim Light, he could see the arc of her body under the blanket, but her feet were exposed.

With a slightly hardened expression, he advised, “The villa sits in a relatively remote area, so the thermostat here isn’t as good as in the city.

You should cover your whole body or your cold will get worse.”
