Rachel didn’t understand what he meant at first.

After a moment, she realized he referred to the cockroach in her room.

“No worries.

I understand.”

“Dewey had this place disinfected before you came over.

That cockroach in your room must have slipped through the cracks and avoided the chemicals,” Alberto continued.

“I already told him to have the place disinfected again tomorrow.”

“Okay.”

After a moment of silence, Alberto suggested, “You can’t stay in that room.

The cockroach might still be there and come out at any time.”

Rachel had originally planned to catch the cockroach later, so when Alberto said she couldn’t stay in the room, she was taken aback.

Before she could stop herself, she blurted out, “Then, where would sleep?”

“In my room.”

..

Library

“What?” Rachel was utterly perplexed, her eyes widening.

She bit her lower lip and asked, “What did you say?”

“You can sleep in my room tonight,” Alberto said impassively, which left Rachel thinking she probably was just overreacting.

But it was definitely something to be surprised about.

“If I sleep in your room, where will you sleep?”

Alberto looked at her with a smirk.

Just like earlier, he didn’t answered his question directly and said, “I can’t sleep in the study.”

Later that evening, Rachel found herself in Alberto’s bed.

The room was pitch dark except for the lights in the hallway and in the garden reflecting through the windows and the small gap beneath the door.

Lying in the bed, Rachel gazed at the ceiling with pursed lips.

A faint citrusy scent filled the air.

After staring a little too long at nothing, she felt slight dryness in her eyes.

As she blinked twice, she called out in a low voice, “Mr.

Gibson?”

But she was only answered by the eerie silence.

There was no response from Alberto.

The only thing she heard was the sound of their breathing.

Rachel waited.

When Alberto didn’t reply, she took her gaze off the ceiling and peered at the bottom of the bed, turning over.

“Mr.

Gibson?”

Still, there was nothing but silence.

Rachel squinted her eyes under the dim light.

With the blanket up his chest, Alberto lay on the floor without any movement, seemingly in deep sleep.
