~ Violet ~

“Wow, this is such a nice place!”
Violet’s mom threw her gaze out to the green lush gardens of the estate and she smiled from ear to ear. Today, she and Violet were spending the afternoon together, walking through the garden and having tea.
After about three weeks of living in the estate, Violet was finally confident enough to invite her mom over. Damon and his men were also out on business, so she figured this would be the perfect time to have her at the estate. She wouldn’t have to see so many guys in black suits and guns walking around.
“Oh, Vi, it’s like you live in a castle,” her mom said again, pointing to the large estate standing behind them. “But what kind of work you do here exactly?”
“Well, I, uh… assist in day-to-day activities for the person who owns the place,” Violet said with a nervous laugh. She was also avoiding eye contact with her mom.
“You mean like an assistant?”
“Something like that,” she shrugged.
“Your boss must be very successful to own a place like this. Are they treating you well here?”
“Yes, they are,” Violet nodded.
“That’s good,” Barbara sighed. “And how long you said your contract will last?”
“About eight more days,”
“You mean you only get to live here for eight more days?” Her mom stopped her tracks and gaped. “Why didn’t you tell me sooner, I would’ve come over and taken walks with you every day in this beautiful place,”
“We can still take walks at the park when I get out,” Violet laughed. “Just not this park,”
Without Violet realizing it, more than three weeks had passed and now she only had 8 days left in her contract. The realization was somewhat bittersweet because on one hand, she was happy to go home and be with her family, plus they’d be about three million dollars richer. But on the other hand, not being with Damon made her feel a certain type of way.
Violet let out a sigh and pulled out her cellphone. She checked her notifications and her face looked disappointed when there was nothing there.
“That cellphone must be awfully interesting,” her mother said casually, pulling her from her train of thought. “You’ve been looking at it for at least ten times already,”
“Oh, no… I was just waiting for a text,” Violet said as she put the phone away.
“You never wait around for a text,” her mom said in a teasing tone. “Must be someone important. Is it that policeman guy?”
“Jesse? No,” Violet shook her head. “We don’t talk anymore since our last date. And I don’t think we’re a good match anyway,”
“So it’s someone else?” Barbara said with a playful smile. “Care to share?”
Violet and her mom were close, they had no secrets. If this was any other guy, Violet wouldn’t hesitate for a second to tell her all about him. But this was Damon Van Zandt, the mafia lord and the devil on earth.
How was I supposed to tell mom about that?
“It’s kind of hard to explain,” Violet said, pausing for a beat before adding, “And I don’t even know what I feel about him,”
“Well, do you know what he feels about you?” she asked.
“That’s also the thing,” Violet sighed dramatically. “I don’t think he’s the type of guy that’s capable of love,”
Violet only knew Damon for about a month, but she knew a lot about him already. She knew how ruthless and cold he could be towards other people. She knew that nothing matters to him, everything was just business and nothing personal. And most of all, she knew from Talia that Damon never really recovered from losing his fiancée. If she was stupid enough to fall for someone like him, it would be like walking into a lion’s den. He’d break her heart and chew it out into pieces.
“Everyone’s capable of love, Violet. They just have different ways of showing it,”
Violet threw a look over at her mom. Barbara was looking at the row of flowers in the garden, dropping words of wisdom ever so nonchalantly.
“Your dad and I were together for almost sixteen years. Do you wanna know the secret?” she said again.
Violet nodded her head.
“It’s not about finding the perfect person because there’s no such thing,” Barbara said as she picked out a beautiful light pink rose from the bushes. “It’s about finding the person that is your kind of strange, your kind of crazy, and loves you your kind of way,”
Barbara turned to her daughter and gave her the rose. Violet was caught off guard. She took the rose and took all those words in. Meanwhile, Barbara just smiled and turned back to the bushes, enjoying her walk through the rose garden.
Violet stared at the rose in her hand and she couldn’t help but think of the man who gave her roses the first time they met. Her mother’s words kept ringing in her head as she thought about the man who had the audacity of buying off her virginity. The man who trapped her into a deal, the man who taught her everything she needed to know about pain and pleasure, and the man who was also a demon.
“It’s about finding the person that is your kind of strange, your kind of crazy, and loves you your kind of way…”

Three days had passed since Violet saw Damon last. Their last interaction was when she stopped him to give him his phone before he left for work. Usually, Damon would leave for work in the morning and return at night. But that night, he didn’t come home. He did send her a text though, and they were texting for a little bit.
Texting with Damon wasn’t the same as talking to him in person. First off, he was the one who initiated the text, but then he’d take ages to reply. And when he did reply, he was barely saying anything at all.
Not being able to see Damon for three days was a rough ordeal. Talia said she should just enjoy it, call it a time off, but Violet didn’t like it. She knew her days at the estate were numbered and not seeing Damon was a loss. She tried to fill her time by watching TV, reading books, and even having her mom over for the first time. Having her mom over was great, but it still didn’t take away the fact that the nights became unbearably lonely for Violet.
After they had dinner together at the estate, the nighttime arrived and it was time for Barbara to go home. She called her mom a cab and after she saw her mother out, Violet returned to her room and checked on her phone again. There were still no new messages from Damon, and Violet g*****d in disappointment. She wondered if she should text him again, but she ended up re-reading the messages he sent her before.
Damon Van Zandt: I miss you.
That was the first text he ever sent her. It was sent three days ago, moments after he left the estate. Right before he left, Violet and Damon shared a little awkward goodbye. She had wished that he’d k**s her before he left, but he didn’t. But he probably felt it too because minutes later he sent her that text.
Violet R. Carvey: I miss you too. :’)
That was Violet’s reply. She was giddy and excited when she sent that text. She wasn’t expecting Damon to text her at all, so that was a total surprise.
Damon didn’t text her anything else throughout the day. And when the nighttime came and he wasn’t home, Violet sent him another text.
Violet R. Carvey: You’re not coming home tonight? 🙁
Damon didn’t reply until the next morning. And even though he did, all he said was:
Damon Van Zandt: Got some business to attend to.
Violet immediately texted back:
Violet R. Carvey: When will you be back?
Hours later, he replied:
Damon Van Zandt: Soon.
That was the last text he sent her and it was from yesterday evening. Violet asked Talia about it and she said that it was normal for the boys to leave on business and be out for days. But Talia found it rather peculiar that Damon was texting her. Whenever the guys were out on business, texting was never allowed because they didn’t want their presence to be traced – either by the feds or by the enemies.
“That should tell you a lot,” Talia said.
“What do you mean?”
“He’s risking danger just to text you,”
Violet didn’t know what Talia meant by that. All she knew was that Damon was gone and she couldn’t reach him at all. Three days had passed and Violet wondered how much longer before he’d be home. The end of the contract was fast approaching and all she wanted was to spend as much time with him as she could.
Violet R. Carvey: I wish you’re here with me. The nights aren’t the same without you.
Against her better judgment, Violet decided to text him. It took her more than ten minutes just to conjure those two sentences. She was hesitant to hit the send button at first, and when she finally did, she couldn’t take the anxiety and she threw her phone to her bed with a squeal.
Violet didn’t want to think about the text and she distracted herself by reading a book. But even though she was reading Hemingway and it was a captivating story, she couldn’t help but check her phone every five minutes or so. Before she knew it, the minutes turned into hours and it was now midnight and there was still no reply from him.
What did I tell you? He’s not capable of love. Stop trying.
Violet sighed for the millionth time today and threw her phone back on the bed. She gave up on the idea that he would reply to her text and she decided to go to sleep.
* KNOCK * KNOCK *
But just before she could fall asleep, she heard a knock on the door and the door creaked open. Violet’s heart leaped at the thought that it might be Damon. She turned her head instinctively and her heart stopped beating when she saw the man standing at her door.
“Hey,” he said in that low and husky voice.
Violet couldn’t believe her eyes. There was a lump in her throat and her whole body felt like a puddle. Damon was standing in front of her, wearing that signature black suit and handsome smile.
“You’re back…” she croaked.
“I’m back,” he said.
Violet wanted to jump from the bed and into his arms, but she was in such a shock, she couldn’t even move.
“W-why didn’t you reply to my text?” she stammered.
“So that I can do this in person,”
Not wasting another second, Damon strode over to her and grabbed her face with both his hands. He crashed her lips onto hers and kissed her like she was his lifeline. He kissed her hungrily and passionately like they were the last two people on earth.
Violet’s entire heart exploded in a wave of euphoria as she linked her arms around his neck. She never felt anything like this before and she showed it by returning his k**s with the same amount of fervor. Damon let out a g***n and pushed her down on the bed. Without breaking off the k**s, he climbed on top of her and hovered atop her body. Violet kept her hands on his body at all times and she never let him go for the rest of the night.
“Will you stay with me tonight?” Violet said breathlessly when Damon finally pulled away. He was taking a moment to catch his breath, but he kept his gaze pierced on her.
“I’m staying,” he said.
Their eyes bore into each other as they closed the distance between their lips again. Violet’s heart never felt so full and nothing could describe what she was feeling at this very moment.
If two people were missing each other the most on this planet tonight, it might just be them two.
