He allowed Evelyn to hit him in the family chapel and was now gently tending to her wound with one goal in mind: to soften her heart and convince her to let Dahlia go. Five years ago, Rosa was going to punish Dahlia so many times. Evelyn was head over heels for Charles then. A mere look from him, and Evelyn would find herself pleading with Rosa on his behalf, insisting she was okay. Evelyn just couldn't stand to see him in any trouble. Back then, her love was so selfless and humble.

"Evelyn, Dahlia just cares too much..." Charles began, but Evelyn's face darkened immediately. Everything was just as she suspected. "I'll say it again. I won't release Dahlia early."

Evelyn tossed the blankets aside, disregarding her weakened state, and pushed herself up from the bed. "Evelyn!" Charles frowned, reaching for her uninjured hand to pull her back, but Evelyn shook him off easily. "Don't touch me."

She got out of bed, her face icy, and headed for the door. Before she reached it, Charles' phone rang. He paused and answered, "Sandy, what's wrong?"

"Daddy, where's Mommy? I want Mommy. Where is she?" Sandy had been with Dahlia from the day she was born. Deep down, she clung to Dahlia fiercely. Waking up without Dahlia there for a long time scared her into thinking Dahlia didn't want her anymore, so she called Charles, crying her heart out.

"Sandy, it's okay. Mommy will be at the hospital with you soon," Charles assured her gently. After a bit more soothing, he hung up and moved past Evelyn, ready to leave.

"Charles, it's not time yet," Evelyn said, grabbing his hand to stop him.

"Enough, stop this nonsense!" Charles snapped, pulling his hand free and striding away. Evelyn had been locked up for so long. Now, she had locked up Dahlia, but that was just seen as causing trouble.

As Charles reached downstairs, Rosa blocked his path. "Charles, where are you off to in such a hurry?" She hadn't heard Sandy's call but figured out he was rushing off because he couldn't bear Dahlia's suffering anymore.

"Grandma, Dahlia's been locked up for hours. The punishment's enough. This won't happen again," Charles stated, making his stance clear. Just like that, he glossed over all the hardship Evelyn faced in the basement.

Rosa's expression turned stormy.

She had thought there was still some hope for Charles if he had feelings for Evelyn. After all, Evelyn loved him deeply. How could someone just stop loving someone? If he could just make things right with Evelyn, maybe they still had a chance.

"Charles, I'm asking you one last time. What's your deal with Eve? If you care for her, break things off with Dahlia. If not, I'll start setting up dates for Eve tomorrow!"

That made Charles pause slightly. He replied, somewhat cryptically, "Dates?" Then, he threw a knowing glance at Evelyn, standing at the top of the stairs, and chuckled. "Grandma, don't bother yourself. She won't go on any dates."

With that, he left, confident that Evelyn was still madly in love with him and wouldn't consider seeing anyone else. Rosa followed his gaze to Evelyn and cursed inwardly. This bastard! Rosa had only mentioned dating to test Charles, but seeing him choose Dahlia without hesitation made her stop trying to hold him back, and she finally made up her mind.
