The Alpha's Exchanged Mate
The Alpha’s Exchanged Mate – Chapter 94

Authors POV…

Caleb slumped into his chair, feeling like the world’s burden was carried by him. The day had been a tough one, and many more of this day would follow until they had been able to conquer the sizzlers. The training had gone well without a glitch; it made him feel good knowing they were making progress. He had returned to the office due to the distress call he had received from Xander. His mind was too preoccupied to actually hear him right. However, since he was returning to work, he thought he might as well call him back.

Dialing Xander’s line, he picked on the first ring. Caleb chuckled, “miss me that much?”

“Shouldn’t you be glad I do?” Xander’s voice boomed from the receiver.

“It’s obvious there is a limited time you can go without me. Whichever way, I will always be by your side, baby.”

There was a slight pause, “I should tell Edwina to be careful of you around me. I really like my Luna, not you.”

Caleb laughed lightly, picking up a pen from the table and tossing it. “So, tell me. Why did you call?”

“It’s kind of tacky. But let me ask, do you remember what killed Sonia and Edwina’s father?”

Thinking for a moment, “I can’t remember precisely. I recall we Omega’s got the news that he was found dead in the woods, unrecognizable as announced by Ben and his men.”

“Doesn’t that seem fishy?”

“I don’t see anything fishy in it. The man has been long buried, and the DNA from the remains did confirm it was him.”

“Then it’s safe to say Sonia has lost her mind.”

“What exactly is going on?” Caleb questioned.

“According to Edwina, Sonia claims their father is after her life because she exposed and tarnished his image during the trial,” Xander responded, sounding pained.

Trying to hold back a laugh, Caleb snickered. “I know this might sound like an insult to your ex-wife. But is there a need to visit a mental home?”

“She is only trying to get into Edwina’s head and get released from prison.”

“I guess she has every reason to do that.”

“Why?”

Caleb rolled his eyes, glad he couldn’t be seen. “Her baby, of course.”

“Oh, that! I almost forgot.”

“So, what’s the deal now?”

“Get to listen to her tomorrow, and you already know what it is. I have to let her stay with us.” Sighed Xander

“And how do you feel about that?”

“The truth?”

“Yeah.”

“I hate it; I hate that I have to feel some sort of pity for her. I feel angry that I can’t do justice to her and Ben for hurting me so much. I hate that my hands are tied.”

Caleb breathed into the phone. He knew exactly how Xander was feeling. It had taken a lot of battle within himself to be able to accommodate Sonia to that extent. And it’s all because of Edwina; Xander was obviously smitten by that woman.

“You and I know you don’t really have to do this. You can make an order, and everyone would abide by it, including your Luna.” Caleb advised

Xander sounded like he had a lot on his mind, “Edwina would never forgive me, and as much as it sounds absurd, what if Sonia was right? She would think I intentionally made her sister suffer.”

Rubbing at his forehead, “that’s true. Is there any way she might be right?”

“If Ben had been involved in his death announcement. Then maybe, something doesn’t sit right.”

“Should I look into it?”

“Not yet. Let’s have her move to the house first. There are more things at stake now; the sizzlers aren’t backing down yet, and we aren’t so equipped either.”

“Well said.”

“Have a good night’s rest. Seems like you need it better than I do.” Xander jested.

“Is it okay to say, get the hell off my phone?”

“It’s nice you asked, though. I might have your head by morning.”

Both men laughed heartily before saying their byes. Caleb threw his head to the back. It was really nice to have Xander loosen up. The betrayal he had been exposed to had messed him up a bit; thankfully, he was open to Edwina. He felt happy for his friend and alpha.

Letting the silence consume him, his heartbeat raced as the thought of a certain name struck him. He looked towards the door expecting it to burst open anytime soon, but he knew better than to expect that. The past week had passed by in a Frenzy, and he still wasn’t clear about so many things. The date he was supposed to have with Ramona had been postponed due to his busy schedule. She had begun acting a bit different since then; Caleb had gotten used to the intense romp they had been having for a while. However, it was obvious she needed his attention beyond that.

“I need to find some time.” He told himself. Picking up his phone, he texted Ramona.

Hey, hope your day went well? Just wanted to know if you’ll be available for the weekend.

Exiting the chat box, his eyes caught sight of Becca’s smiling face on his screensaver. They had taken the picture together on one of their day outs before he became the Beta. He misses her so much, the last time they were together had been kind of awkward, and he had no idea what was wrong with her. They hadn’t really talked since then, and he felt terrible for not checking on her.

He and Becca had come a long way since her husband’s death. He could rely on her to ease his burdens from her words of comfort. She was like his second home; he appreciated her presence in his life and would do everything he could to be there for her. Becca was the most considerate and thoughtful person he had ever met, which must be the reason why she didn’t bother to call to avoid any form of disturbance. He yearned to speak to her.

Rather than text her, he called instead, wanting to hear her voice. When she did pick up, he felt some kind of way when he heard her giggle loudly into the receiver.
