The Alpha's Exchanged Mate -
The Alpha’s Exchanged Mate – Chapter 64
Author’s POV…
“Things are not really good with us,” she replied with a fake smile that could only be translated as sadness on her face. She knew that look so well.
“Really? What’s wrong? Is it still because he is in love with Ramona?” She asked, concerned. Over the month that Edwina had stayed in the pack house, a lot of the female pack members disrespected her, and she knew it. Sometimes she needed to enforce some tough punishment attached to it before something could be done. But Becca had shown her a high level of respect and sometimes even defended her. She had come to grow to love Becca not because of who she was to her but because of who she was to herself.
“He told me that he slept with her, like they just casually had s*x,”
Edwina could feel the pain in her voice. It always hurts to see the one you love or at least claim to love to cheat on you with someone else.
“That’s bad,” she consoled her.
“Not really, after all, he and I aren’t dating and there is no way he could leave a lady as young and beautiful as Ramona and go for someone as old and cranky as me,”
“No, don’t you dare say that. The fact that he doesn’t see you in that way doesn’t mean that you are old and cranky. You are not. In fact, I can almost swear you are one of the coolest people ever,” she said, and Becca laughed out heartily. She had not heard such a thing from anyone apart from her husband.
“Becca, don’t you think it would help if you finally opened up to him about your feelings,” Edwina wasn’t asking, but she required an answer from her.
“Of what use is it? I am aware that he likes someone else, and we are okay as friends, although I would want more, so why would I want to ruin all we have just to let out a feeling that won’t be acted upon?
“Hmm,”
She made a fair point, “I don’t think it is really about letting him know so that he would love you too, but also to set you free. You have been holding it in your heart for long and I am sure that’s not exactly what you want, maybe telling him will finally give you the closure to move on. It’s better than actually staying and secretly hoping that one day he will get to look at you and magically recognize that you are in love with him. Life is not a movie Becca,” she muttered to her.
“I have never thought of it in that way. I am a realist,”
“Realist indeed,” Edwina scoffed, and they both laughed.
Soon the door opened, and they both turned back. Edwina knew it was only one person that could open the door in that manner without knocking.
“Alpha Alex,” Becca greeted and bowed down slightly.
“Becca,” he replied and glared at Edwina at the other side of the room, standing with her veil and being covered up, “is she ready?” He asked, and Edwina glared at him.
“Yes she is sir,” she replied.
“Let’s go then,”
“Becca, can you excuse me and the Alpha, please,” she requested, and Becca nodded her head and left. Alpha Alex rolled his eyes; this was part of the reason he had been avoiding her all day because he didn’t want to have a conversation of that manner with her. He even wanted to neglect the fact that she was dressed that way if it would mean they did not have to talk that day.
“You have been avoiding me all day,” she finally said when Becca was gone, and it was just the two of them left in the room.
“Was I?” He asked like he was oblivious to whatever she was saying, but he knew it to be true.
“You know you are, so don’t act like whatever it is I am thinking is just in my head, because you and I know it’s not,”
He looked at the hanging wall clock and the fancy arctic hourglass that he did not know how to read but kept in his room to give it an olden day, ancient kind of feeling,
“I am ready to stay here and not move. I don’t care if we don’t go for the trial; after all, at this point, I am not sure I want to go,”
He gave her a sharp look.
“You don’t want to go, and you forced my hand into granting her a trial,” he asked, and she frowned.
“Do you think it is easy for me? I am caught between doing what’s right and what’s best,” she mumbled, and he gazed at her.
“This is why I don’t want to have this conversation with you,”
“So you have been avoiding me truly?” She asked even though she already knew the answers to her questions.
“What do you want me to say, Edwina? Nobody is invalidating all this, but I am not sure this is what we want now. We have been facing too many battles at once, and we haven’t really gotten any chance to breathe,” he said, and she scowled, but she knew he was right; they have been going through a lot.
“But she is my sister. What am I supposed to do?” She whimpered, crashing into the couch, and he knew she needed him at that moment not to be hard on her. He wheeled himself to where she sat and wrapped her into a tight hug, followed by a brief k**s.
“I know you want to be fair to her and all that, but sometimes our good intentions have bad results, and we need to learn to start living with that hard truth. Not every good thing will have a good outcome,” he spoke wisely.
“Are you some sort of monk or something,” she teased, and he burst into laughter.
“Something like that.” He replied, “well let’s just take this thing one step at a time. Let’s try and see how we can get through today and tomorrow can take care of itself.”
She nodded and smiled at him. She knew that at this point, it would have been harder getting to do this all alone and was glad that he was there to support and understand her all the way. He helped her put on her veil over her face, and then they went down and into the courtroom together.
