The Alpha's Exchanged Mate -
The Alpha’s Exchanged Mate – Chapter 46
Edwina’s POV…
When I exited the room the first time and heard the sound of broken glass, I wanted to turn back.
No, I rushed back, but then I saw Caleb enter the room before I did and felt that he was in a better place to help than I was.
I turned back again and went to the balcony of the pack house. I could see the whole of the night howlers’ territory from up there, women, children, and men whose life depended on a battle with no hope of winning. That must be a whole lot of pressure on the Alpha, and with Ben on the loose, it must be extra pressure on him.
The fact that Ben knew all the ins and outs of the territory made it worse. He could go in and out without being noticed.
When I was married to Ben, he would tell me about the tunnels and channels leading in and out of the territory that only he knew about.
No wonder it was so easy for him and Sonia to cheat without being noticed for a long time.
The only time they were noticed was the time the Alpha became crippled, and they thought they already had ultimate power over themselves. Ben had already started forming a bunch of resistant groups, and if the Alpha had not acted fast when he heard of the affair, they might have most likely taken the territory from right under his nose.
“Oh my God!!!” I exclaimed out loud. I had been thinking of ways to help out, and that was why I had even suggested myself as bait. I knew it was a bad and risky idea, and I would most likely get killed in the process, but then I realized I had forgotten something so important.
There is one person that knows Ben the most, even better than I did, and that is Sonia. She is in the perfect place to help out.
I wore my sky blue gown. It was a simple gown. I always attempted to dress modestly whenever I wanted to visit Sonia. I am still so aware of the fact that she doesn’t know about the wedding.
I had instructed the guard to give her a private room, and Alpha Alex had made her free from every form of hard labor since she was still awaiting trial. But I knew he did it because I requested it.
She had limited access to people, and I had instructed that it shouldn’t be mentioned around her. I could only control so little from my end. At least till I am courageous enough to tell her myself.
As I walked into the private room and sat down, I noticed I was becoming more at ease with this place. The first time I came here, I felt so uneasy and restless.
Sonia walked into the room and smiled. Today she was happy to see me, not like the last time when she was expecting it to be the Alpha, Alexander Chase, but to her disappointment, it was just her sister.
I don’t know how she would take the news of Ben escaping, and I don’t know if I was risking something. What if she decides to escape too? I have seen Sonia in her wolf form, she is extremely powerful, and when she was also Luna, she was also given the special power of the moon goddess.
“Hello, sister,” she greeted as she settled in on the chair. Her baby bump was very much prominent at this time. I wasn’t sure I wanted to ask her how far off she was because it would mean me knowing the exact timeline that my ex-husband f****d and even conceived a child with her in the process. It would mean me going back to events that occurred during that time and start placing how stupid and dumb I had been in the past.
I didn’t want to know, but with all indication, she was already in her second trimester, and that means___ I immediately killed the thought from my head. This was exactly what I was avoiding. This was exactly what I did not want to do.
“Hi Sonia, how are you doing?” I asked her.
“Well, this place is becoming a little bit bearable by the day,” she replied with a certain gleam on her face. She had that beam on her face whenever she was about to let out exciting news.
“The Alpha came again to visit me, and this time we got to actually talk,” she said, smiling, and I gave a half smile. Of course, I knew about it already but also, I wasn’t happy that she was having this feign hope that things with her and the Alpha would get better and she would eventually win his heart back again.
“That’s good. At least it is a step forward,” I replied to her, trying to hide how displeased I was by her enthusiasm, especially knowing that whatever she was thinking would never happen, especially the fact that the Alpha had no intention of going back to her.
“Yes, I have this feeling in me that things would get better. It’s absurd, I know, but I have hope that the love he has for me would grow back gradually, and one day he would fully forgive me for what I did and maybe, just maybe, accept my child.” She said, rubbing her stomach, “I know he would make a better father than Ben,” she added.
I knew that was my cue to chip into that part of the conversation, especially since I did not want to respond to her previous statement.
“Talking about Ben, I came here because of him,” I said, and I could see her roll her eyes.
“Please Edwina, I do not want to talk about him,” she mumbled.
“But this is important, ” I replied.
“Okay, what is it?” She asked.
“Has he tried to reach you recently?”
She glanced at me and rolled her eyes towards the door.
“Well, he has some connections here. They gave me a phone some time ago. He called me with it and asked about the child and my well-being. I told him to go to hell that I don’t want him, and I would die before I let him father my child,” she stated.
And I exhaled, “where is the phone now, are you still in connection with him?” I asked.
“No, another guard confiscated it. It even landed me in trouble. I think that’s why I have been in isolation from others for a while now, that guy is bad news to me, and I am done making him my headline.” She said to me, and I frowned. If only she knew that the only reason she was in isolation was that I asked for it and not because of some phone that was found in her custody.
“Why do you ask about him? Is he reaching out to you? Edwina, please do what I did; block him out of your life. Trust me, Ben isn’t a good person,” she stated firmly.
“I know that,” I whispered and went silent. How was I to break this news to her? But I needed her help. How was I to tell her? And I do not know what her reaction would be. Would that mean I just fueled a taste for freedom?
I had not even discussed it with the Alpha, but I was certain he would kick against it.
“Ben escaped from prison,” I blurted out, and I could see her eyes widen in shock and disbelief.
“That son of a bitch, he told me he would, and come for me and the child, and I told him to f**k himself, so he actually went through with his insane plan,” she said, and I glared at her.
I wasn’t the only one he told he would escape.
“His insane plan?” I asked when my head rang back her last words.
“Yes, he told me his plan to escape.”
And Jackpot!!!
