Elizabeth looked confused when she woke up in the hospital bed and found Asher staring down at her.

There was a look of relief and worry on his face as he stared at her. She didn’t know why he was worried but having him there made her feel some kind of relief as well.

Her hand wandered to her stomach and caressed it softly before looking back at Asher again. Her memories were a little faint. The last thing she remembered was getting back to the room after the meeting with the elders and next minutes, she was crashing to the floor breathless.

If she was right there and now then it could only means, she wasn’t dead yet she noted with a relief sigh but her head was throbbing in pain as she struggled to focus on something other than Asher’s searching eyes.

His presence by her side meant, he still had an atom of affection for her and wasn’t out plotting her demise.

After all, she was carrying his child and she expected nothing less of him. They stayed in that uncomfortable silence for a while, each with their own thoughts.

Asher was glad to see her wide awake. He had waited all morning for that moment as he reached out his hand and took hold of hers in his before looking into her green eyes watching him curiously.

“How do you feel?”

“Are you really going to kill me?” Elizabeth asked and just kept staring at him.

She wanted to be sure, really wanted to know what her fate was in all of this. The way he stared at her was something she didn’t quite understand.

His lips parted slightly but no word made it out. Asher was quite taken by her unexpected question.

“I don’t know, Elizabeth. I don’t know what is going to happen now or tomorrow or even after you deliver that child but one thing I do know is that you will be okay. Even if it’s the last thing I do, I’d make sure you are okay” He said firmly and she let out a shaky breath.

Tears threatened to fall from her eyes but she couldn’t allow him to see that what he said affected her. She wanted to be strong even in the face of trials she was going through for her sake and that of her baby.

“incase you decide to kill me, I hope you do it yourself at least since all of it was your idea in the first place” She said accusingly and Asher gave a hesitant nod in reply.

She wasn’t quite out of the storm yet and he knew, he had to take it easy for the sake of her health and that of the baby.

“You will stay with Eva from now onward” he said finally.

Elizabeth was surprised by his decision but realized it was for the best. She didn’t understand how she would have lived with him after what he and the council of elders were about to do.

She wasn’t sure of his emotions and the last thing she wanted was for him to transfer aggression to her and her unborn child. the last thing she wanted was for him to harm her.

“Okay” She agreed without looking at his face.

Asher sighed and quickly let go of her hand before dragging a chair towards where he stood. He wanted to spend some time with her before he went back to work.

Beth didn’t know what to make of this but she decided to just pretend to be asleep to keep from speaking with him.

She could feel her head throbbing even more just thinking about the uncertainty surrounding her situation. She didn’t understand why Asher couldn’t be Alpha enough to take a stand against them. The fact alone annoys her to no end.

“What are you so afraid of huh?” Elizabeth blurted out before she could stop herself.

Asher was taken aback by her question. He didn’t understand it but the way she looked at him seemed like she could see through his very soul. It was unnerving to say the least.

“I’m not afraid of anything”

She couldn’t help but laugh a little.

“Keep telling yourself that and you might believe it eventually” Elizabeth seethed.

Asher stared at her calmly as Eva’s words resonated in his ears. Elizabeth was just recovering from her episode and this reaction he was getting from her was expected. He’d be a fool to exchange words with her when he very well knew that she wasn’t lucid yet.

“Okay” he simply said.

There was a pained look in his eyes as he stared at her. She knew she was right because she had struck a chord in him. He was afraid. Asher knew he has been afraid for too long.

Afraid to go against the elders. To let his feelings show. To actually man up to his full responsibility but not anymore. But he doesn’t have to say those words out loud to her or anyone else.

He was going to prove it by his actions just like he has been taught by his father.

Another minute went by with neither of them saying any more words to one another before Elizabeth began to cough and he quickly grab the glass of water placed at the drawer and handed it to her.

Asher realized she couldn’t get herself into a sitting position and reached over and grasped her shoulders just as delicately before titling her head enough for her to drink.

He watched her drink to her satisfaction before placing the cup away and he start to lower her back on the bed again. Suddenly, their face was just an inch away from touching.

His eyes darted towards her lips slightly and she swallowed nervously. Asher was about to lean in to brush his l*p against her mouth when someone cleared their throat loudly behind them and he pushed away before turning around to find Alex by the door with fresh flowers in hand.

“Did I interrupt something?” He asked, his eyes darting between Asher and Beth.

“No, Alex” Asher said and he nodded before walking over to stand beside her bed, a wide smile plastered on his face.

“How are you, Beth”

She smiled, “I’m okay”

“I brought this for you” he said offering them to her.

She grab hold of it before glancing at Asher whose face was just as passive.

“Thank You, Alex. I love them”

She sniff the flowers before hugging them to her chest with a deep sigh.

“Come on, Alex. Eva said she need rest”

Asher wrapped both arms around his shoulder and start to drag him out the door. Alex was about to protest but Asher was not about to let him off either.

“see you later, Beth” Alex called before allowing himself to be pulled out the door.

Asher gave her one final look before disappearing out the door.
