“And what will that change?” Asher asked with raised brow.

“I don’t know but it’s a great way to start”

“And if she doesn’t accept my apology?”

Alex gave a half shoulder shrug, “If she doesn’t then you will have to be patient and keep apologizing till she does”

“You don’t f*****g get it do you?” Asher growled out in frustration. “it’s not about apologizing to her. This is far deeper and a lot more complicated. The execution is fast approaching and I don’t know if I can stop it and I don’t want to give her hope and then quash it because that would be worst”

“No, worst would be going through with the damn execution and you know it” Alex yelled right back before he could get a grip on himself. “Look, Asher. I know you are the Alpha and has every right to do whatever but I’m just saying, maybe a death sentence is too big a punishment for someone who has nothing to do with what happened to Macy”

At the sound of that name, Asher heard a ringing in his ears prompting him to shove his Beta hard on the chest with a snarl erupting through his clenched teeth. “Don’t you f*****g mention her name to me Alex. You have no f*****g idea what it feels like waking up every morning without hearing the sound of her voice. You have no f*****g idea”

“Hit me if you must but don’t say I don’t know the pain of loosing her too. She was like a sister to me but killing Elizabeth won’t bring her back”

With clenched fist, Asher aim for his jaw but Alex jumped out of the way before he could land a clean punch to his jawline. “You think I don’t know that? But I can’t take back what has been said and you know it”

“You can’t or you won’t? Because last time I checked, you were still the damn Alpha and those old fools can’t do nothing about it” Alex dared to express even further, leaving Asher in a rather numb state as he stood with clenched fist but unmoving. He seem to be deep in thought, his eyes shooting daggers at his Beta. The only thing stopping him from going all crazy on him is because he is best friend, that and also the fact that he is the only voice of reasoning around him.

Asher let out a deep breath after a while and turned on his heels and began to walk away.

“Asher?” He could hear Alex calling out to him even as he walked away.

“We are done talking, Alex” He called back and heard him chuckle.

“See you around Alpha and remember all what i said” He growled at his Beta retort but said nothing in reply.

Asher spent the rest of that day busying himself with pack business while avoiding his room all together. Alex’s words were still making the rounds in his head and doesn’t know how to go face her without thinking of a way to apologize.

After passing by the kitchen, he decided to surprise Elizabeth by bringing food to her. He made his way towards the humongous kitchen, much to the surprise of some of the maids who were rounding up dinner for the night.

“Greetings, Alpha Asher” Margaret, the woman in charge of the kitchen said before bowing respectfully to him.

“Greeting, Margaret” he replied firmly.

“What brings you to the kitchen, Alpha. I mean, you could have sent someone to get whatever you need or I could have delivered personally myself”

“It’s fine. I just need to do this myself”

He quickly asked for the things he thought Elizabeth might like and it was handed to him just as quickly.

“Are you sure, you don’t want someone to carry it for you?” The older woman asked once again and he turned her down before he took hold of the tray of food and began to head out in his way.

He got back to his chamber and pushed the door open and he was immediately relieved to see Elizabeth was in the room. She had just had her bath, judging from the strong coconut oil scent hitting his nose hard.

“Good evening, Elizabeth. I brought food” He said with a nervous chuckle before offering it to her.

Elizabeth only stared back at him but made no move to accept it from him.

Asher wasn’t surprised, he wasn’t expecting anything other than that. He placed the tray on the table beside her before going over to the bed to kick off his shoes. Elizabeth continued to ignore him and this time around, Asher knew this was where the apologies would begin.

He walked over and sat beside her, his finger going under her cheek to lift her face back to meet his gaze. “I’m sorry, Elizabeth. I know you heard me talking to the elders about the execution and now you don’t want to speak to me and I think it’s fair if you don’t want to but I just wanted you to know it was stupid of me” He said before adding, “I know our situation is very complicated but i promise you, i will find a way around it”

Elizabeth only looked up at him briefly before her eyes darted towards the food he brought and then back at him again. “Are you saying this to me because you think it’s what I want to hear or because you really mean it”

Asher quickly grasp her hand in his before turning her to face him completely, “Look, I know it’s hard but I’m trying my best here. I don’t know how I’m going to do it but I will do whatever I can”

She answered with a nod. “Okay, Ash. Let say I believe you for now” Elizabeth said cockily and Asher’s eyes narrowed. “What did you call me?”

“Ash? You call me Elizabeth all the damn time so it’s only fair I call you that for a change” She replied with a sweet innocent smile.

“Don’t call me that” Asher warned weakly.

“I already did so get over it” Elizabeth said with a snort before pulling her tray of food closer, ignoring whatever expression Asher had going on, on his face.

“How do I know this food you brought is not poisoned” Elizabeth asked shortly as she turned to face Asher, a livid look contouring his face.

Asher couldn’t quite imagine the audacity of Elizabeth calling him by his pet name right after he told her not to and not just that but also outrightly accusing him of poisoning the food he brought her.

He was on the verge of snapping right back at her when Alex’s words came back to hunt him once again.

“patience”

He let out a deep breath before replying just as calmly. “No Elizabeth, it’s not poisoned”

He was so calm that Elizabeth was forced to look back at him. She couldn’t place the calmness on it but she had to hand it over to him. He was calm for someone undergoing intense pressure.

“well, eat it” she said and offer him some.

Asher whipped his head towards her, not quite sure he heard what she said. He knew her to be annoying but this just borderline out of her mind.

He gave her a disbelieving look, not quite sure he heard her well. She smiled lightly, offering him the food even more, “Go on, eat it”

“You really are f*****g annoying, you know that right?” He grumbled.

“Coming from something who wanted me dead, still do in fact and you expect me to happily accept anything that comes from you when you wouldn’t even hesitate to put a sword to my neck. Don’t be naive Alpha.’’ Elizabeth mocked.

She was taunting him, that much he knew now and he knew he was slowly losing his mind as well. Any moment from now, he might lose it completely but he knew he couldn’t let that happen.

Asher grabbed the spoon from her hand and took a handful of the mashed potato and placed into his mouth and began to chew, The rich taste and ingredients of the food danced around his tongue as he savored the flavor.

He made to grab another bite and Elizabeth stopped him midway.

“That’s enough. I didn’t say you should finish my food”.

She queried and began to eat her food like a hunger little tigress. Asher was completely irritated and he knew it was evident on his face too. He couldn’t understand how she could devour her food like a wild beast.

When he couldn’t take it anymore, he grumbled out loud. “Could you please stop chewing so damn loudly”

Elizabeth seemed not to have heard him as she continued chewing with careless abandon. He was beyond frustrated at this point and the only thing holding him back was Alex’s words but that was fast losing his relevance.

‘’You’re eating like a pig.’’ Asher thundered.

Elizabeth stopped eating, staring at him with venom in her eyes. “What? You can’t take a little l*p smacking as well?”

Asher sighed loudly before getting back on his feet. He knew this particular night was going to be a really long one so he better get a head start.
