Chapter 101
°° At night °°
(Beth’s room)
Beth was unable to sleep and felt disturbed. She tried to sleep but it seems sleep was far away from her. She’s decided to watch her baby sleep instead as she sat quietly by his cot.
She knew her inability to sleep is due to the weird changes in her body, couple with the fact that her mind was really unsettled. She is scared of Alex’s reaction if she tells him which is why she has reason kept it all to herself.
“What if am not human?” That’s the one question she has been asking herself all day with absolutely no one to answer.
“What if I’m like one of them or even worst, something nastier then them” She let out a frustrated grunt that sounded more like a growl in her own ear.
“Did I just growl?,” She wondered out loud, her eyes still wide with shock.
She was still wondering what had made that sound when she heard noises at the window side. She jumped back on her feet, looking around carefully.
“Who is there?” She called out but there was no reply.
She heard another noise from the window and she begins to panic quietly.
Suddenly, a masked intruder came into view and Beth’s heart flew from it’s position.
Studying the physical structure of the intruder, one could tell that it was a male.
Beth immediately rushed to cover her son, the intruder tries to move towards her child but Beth suddenly moves with supernatural speed throwing the man towards the opposite direction and he landed against the sofa before dropping to the floor.
Beth was more than shocked by her own strength and she could tell that masked man was in doubt as he quickly struggled back on his feet.
“What do you want from us” She sneered at the man dangerously but he doesn’t look like he is about to give a reply to her question, instead continue to advance towards her with his daggers.
“Who are you and what do you want?” Beth asked again trying to act bold. A smart person would be able to detect the shakiness in her voice.
Her heart was literally beating out of her chest, but something within her told her she can beat that guy and only trust that she could so she did.
The man advanced closer and tried to stab her with the blade but moved just as swiftly, before using her nails to scratch him on the face, almost drawing out a growl from his throat.
Suddenly a door opening was heard and the masked man escaped through the window.
“Beth? What’s the noise all about? Are you okay? In there?” It was Alex at the door.
Beth quickly carried her baby before running to unlocked the door.
She was shaking visibly and looked very unsettled.
“Beth, what happened? Why are you shaking in this way?” Alex asked.
Beth tried to explain but her lips trembled, she still clutched her baby tightly unto herself.
“I know something happened. I heard it so calm down and tell me.” Alex said and took her hands and gave it a squeeze, trying to sooth her enough to calm her down.
“Did you see him?” Beth asked and that got Alex confused.
“See who?”
“The masked man, he tried to hurt me and my baby. He left through the window.” Beth said confusing Alex the more.
Alex led her to the bed and made her to sit down. He collected Baby Sam and placed him gently on the bed beside Beth.
“I need you to calm down Beth and explain in details what happened.” Alex said and Beth breathe in and out before speaking up.
“I was seating beside Sam’s cot when I heard noises coming from the window, the noise persisted and I became scared. A masked man gained entry through the room and was after my baby and I_” Beth stopped halfway contemplating whether she should tell Alex about how she moved with supernatural speedd and threw the intruder off balance.
Alex waited patiently for her to continue and she did.
“I outsmarted him and shielded my baby, he brought out a dagger and wanted to use it on me when you knocked. He got scared and then escaped through the window again”
“Am scared Alex, what if he comes back for I and my baby? I am pretty sure he was sent to kill us and he would surely come again.” Beth explained almost at the verge of breaking down in tears.
“Calm down Beth, am here now and no one would hurt you. It’s late already so by tomorrow, we will begin investigations about the intruder. You don’t need to worry or be scared okay?” Alex said trying to ease the fear in her.
“So what if you haven’t come at right time? Is that how I would have gotten killed with my child?” Beth asked with glassy eyes, tears were threatening to fall.
“I hate to see your tears Beth, I have promised to protect you and your child and and I’m never breaking that. I would sleep here tonight and watch out for the intruder okay?” Alex volunteered and Beth’s face brightened.
“Really? Thanks you so much Alex, am so happy to have you beside me.” Beth said with a plain main. Alex felt butterflies in his belly as she said that.
“There’s a blow up bed there, you can use it.”
“Thanks Beth. Now I need you to sleep, I would be watching okay. Don’t just be scared as far as I am beside you.” Alex said and Beth smiled brightly at him.
She adjusted baby Sam on her bed and slept beside him.
Alex watched her sleep and couldn’t help but admire her facial features. His feelings for her keeps growing everyday as he can’t just help it.
He went to the blow up bed and pumped it till it formed a medium-sized bed, he dropped down against it with a sigh.

The next morning, Beth was woken up by the cry of her baby and she immediately got up to check on him. He was looking for food as he kept making suckling sound with his mouth.
Beth carried him in her arms and tries to feed him with some of her milk and soon, he stopped crying. She looks out for Alex in the blow up bed and surprisingly he wasn’t there anymore.
The blow up bed was neatly folded and kept at a corner. Beth realized he had gone to attend to pack duties as usual.
The door knob twisted slightly and open with Izzy coming into view with her food in a tray.
“Hey Izzy, good morning.” Beth greeted and Izzy simply ignored her and walked over to the bed and placed it there without another glance at her direction.
Once she was done. She quickly turned to walk back out before Beth called at her again.
“Izzy, wait please. We need to talk”
“No we do not. I only came to do my duty and I have so my work here is done” She said stiffly and Beth let out a sigh.
“I’m so sorry, Izzy. I know how you feel be_” Beth began to speak but she was caught half way.
“No you do not know how I feel. This isn’t fantasy that you can read an understand. My heart was literally shattered and I can’t cry on my best friend shoulders because each time I remember she is the reason why my love story can never be complete, I bleed even the more so don’t you dare tell me you understand what this feels like because you don’t”
Beth mouth opened slightly but no word made it out. The girl standing before her was indeed her best friend but at that moment, pain and anger has taken the place of their friendship and she could very much see that but still she wanted to apologize to her even though she doubt it would do her any good.
“Izzy, i know you are hurting and this is not me pretending to understand your pain. I just want you to know how sorry I am that things didn’t work out as expected but for whatever it worth, just know I had nothing to do with it. Alex is a grown man and has the right to make his own decision even if it seems like the wrong one”,
Izzy nodded her head slowly before walking out the door.
Later that afternoon, Beth was in her room playing with her baby when Alex walked in with a worried look on his face.
He sat down by the sofa and sighed heavily.
Beth noticed his look and shifted her attention to him.
“Alex, is everything alright? Why do you look so worried? Has the intruder bring caught yet?” Beth asked all at once, feeling anxious to know what had happened and Alex sighed heavily for the second time in a row since he got there.
“We found him.” Alex announced.
“Who?”
“The masked man that came to attack you last night.” Alex said and Beth let out a relief breath.
“That’s good but do you know who he is and who sent him perhaps?” Beth asked curiously.
“We found him dead in the field and couldn’t interrogate him either.” Alex dropped the bombshell and Beth gasped not sure she heard correctly.
“How come he is death? Maybe Karma caught up with him already?.” Beth guessed even though her mind had traveled further than that already.
“That’s not the problem Beth. The most confusing part is that his death was as a result of some claw wounds found on his face.”
“Claw wounds? On his face?” Beth stuttered trying to hide her unsteadiness.
Alex noticed and then stared at her closely with raised brow and she gulped hard.
