I sit up in bed and sigh. My nights are getting shorter and shorter with the chimeras and Théo. The latter is more and more insistent on joining our pack, but I don’t trust him. He told me about the night he was transformed, but even with that, I still don’t believe him. His story is too… perfect! The night so no witnesses and on top of that, his esparto is dead. I don’t trust this guy and it won’t change. For example, good news! Lydia is out of hospital! She wants the same training I got from Allison so she can defend herself, which is really great because I won’t have to worry so much when she goes out to fight.

Noah: Hannah! Are you with us?

Me: Yeah, sorry.

Noah has found eight large holes identical to Tracy and Lucas, a failure. He draws an X on their photos and I sigh. They didn’t deserve to die.

Me: With the eight holes, we’re down to ten chimeras.

Noah: More like eleven

He puts Donovan’s picture up and I look at Stiles. He’s really shocked to see his face, as am I.

Noah: I asked to have the cameras checked and according to the IT guy, his cell had been opened with a magnetic field problem and your… doctor…

Me: Horror doctor

Noah: Yeah. His doctors use magnetic fields so…

Me: Donovan is a chimera!

I move forward with too much conviction to scratch his face but, of course, Noah stops me.

Noah: I’ll cross his face off when I have proof that it’s a failure Hannah.

Me: Yes… sorry

I step back and notice that Stiles has turned and doesn’t notice we exist anymore.

Me: Is everything all right?

Noah: You’re extremely quiet.

He turns around

Stiles: Sorry, I just thought of something, the chimeras are all teenagers so we need to find out why these teenagers were chosen.

Noah: You’re right, there’s probably something special about these kids, but… what?

We’ll have to find out.

later

Theo: To sum up, we’re looking for a teenager with something strange.

Scott: Yeah

Theo: Except… doesn’t everyone in high school?

I sigh

Me: We know Einstein except look at the really strange ones like freshmen. Out of nowhere. With an impossible story. You know the type?

Theo looks at me, frowning, and I smile falsely. The bell rings and I pick up my bag.

Me: Shall we go? We’ve got biology

Theo: Yeah, I’m coming!

I roll my eyes and walk towards the entrance.

Me: I was talking to my brother Raeken

I enter the building. He’s getting on my nerves!

In the evening

Lydia: At my mum’s book club there was more wine

Stiles: Except they’re not reading a supernatural, hallucination-inducing book.

Lydia: I should give it to my mum so she remembers a girl with a lizard tail.

Me: Good idea, but why?

Lydia: I think I saw the doctors during my operation and every time I look at this book, I see these images as if…

Theo: A memory was trying to resurface.

A.. it’s true, there he is. Scott so adorably invited her to our reading session. Brilliant!

Kira: Isn’t that what Valak wanted when he wrote it?

Lydia: Yeah.

Me: So let’s get to work!

We each take a copy and then I settle down on the sofa. It’s going to be a long night!

Later on

Scott: Does anyone feel anything?

Kira: I’m tired.

Me: I’m hungry!

Theo: I think he meant the/

Me: I’m going to make coffee!

The less time I’m in the same space as him, the better I feel.

Kira: I’ll come with you

I nod and we go into the kitchen. I turn on the coffee pot and Kira leans over to me

Kira: Can you do something?

Me: What?

Kira: Can you try and see what’s going to… happen to me… with your powers?

Me: Why?

Kira: I just want to check something

I nod and put my hand on her shoulder. I’m startled by what I see. Kira leaving in tears, Lydia in hospital, Scott lying bleeding, Allison leaving too, Stiles in tears outside her car and… me. I get into a car with my dad and a suitcase.

I let go of Kira and step back. None of this has to happen. I have to do everything I can to stop it.

Me: It’s all right. Don’t worry about a thing.
