Scales of Desire -
Chapter 6: Midnight Rendezvous
Chapter 6: Midnight Rendezvous
The forest seemed to hold its breath as Aria and Drakon faced each other in the moonlit clearing. Tension crackled between them like lightning, a potent mix of curiosity, caution, and an undeniable attraction neither fully understood. Aria lowered her bow completely, her hunter's instincts warring with the strange trust she felt towards this magnificent creature. "You're really here," she whispered, taking a hesitant step forward.
Drakon inclined his great head, his golden eyes never leaving hers. "As are you, Aria Nightshade. Though I must admit, I didn't expect our paths to cross again so soon."
The small messenger dragon looked between them, confusion evident in its tiny features. "But... but I thought... Didn't you send me with a message, Lord Drakon?"
A low rumble of laughter escaped Drakon's chest. "It seems, little one, that you've taken some liberties with your duties. We'll discuss this later. For now, return to the clan and speak of this to no one. Understood?"
The messenger nodded vigorously before spreading its wings and disappearing into the night sky. As its wingbeats faded, silence fell over the clearing once more.
Aria's mind raced with questions, but one burned brighter than the rest. "Why are you here, Drakon? Surely you must know how dangerous this is for both of us."
Drakon's expression grew somber. "I came to investigate the attack on the nearby village. These incidents... they go against everything we stand for. Something is terribly wrong, Aria, and I fear it threatens both our kinds."
Aria's brow furrowed as she recalled the devastation she'd witnessed earlier that day. "The villagers spoke of a black dragon with glowing eyes. Unlike any they'd seen before. Do you know anything about this?" "Only rumors and whispers," Drakon replied, shaking his massive head. "But if such a creature exists, it is no dragon I'm familiar with. Tell me, what brought you to this place?"
"My duty as a hunter," Aria answered, a note of bitterness creeping into her voice. "We were sent to eliminate the threat and assess the damage. But after meeting you... I'm not sure I know what my duty is anymore." Drakon's eyes softened with understanding. "The world is rarely as simple as we're taught to believe, is it? But perhaps that's why we've been brought together - to see beyond the boundaries that have divided us for so long." As they spoke, the initial tension between them began to ease. Aria found herself drawing closer to Drakon, marveling at the play of moonlight on his scales. Without thinking, she reached out a hand. Drakon went very still, watching her with an intensity that made her breath catch. Slowly, deliberately, he lowered his head until her palm rested against his snout. The contact sent a jolt through both of them. "Your scales," Aria murmured in wonder. "They're warm."
"And your touch is gentle," Drakon replied softly. "Not at all what I expected from a renowned dragon slayer."
Aria withdrew her hand, guilt washing over her. "I'm not sure that's who I am anymore. Ever since our first encounter, I've been questioning everything I thought I knew."
Drakon's gaze was piercing. "And what conclusions have you drawn?"
"That there's so much more to learn," Aria admitted. "About dragons, about humans... about myself."
A comfortable silence fell between them as they contemplated the implications of their meeting. The night sounds of the forest gradually returned - the hoot of an owl, the rustle of small creatures in the underbrush. "We can't stay here," Drakon said at last, regret coloring his tone. "It's too risky for both of us to be seen together."
Aria nodded, knowing he was right but reluctant to end their encounter. "Will I see you again?"
Drakon's eyes twinkled with mischief. "Do you want to?"
"Yes," Aria answered without hesitation, surprising herself with her certainty.
"Then we shall find a way," Drakon promised. "But we must be cautious. The stakes are higher than just our own lives now."
As if to emphasize his point, a distant shout echoed through the trees - Aria's fellow hunters calling for her. Panic flashed across her face.
"Go," Drakon urged. "But Aria... be careful whom you trust. Even among your own kind."
With a powerful beat of his wings, Drakon launched himself into the air. Aria watched him soar away, her heart pounding with a mixture of exhilaration and fear. As his form disappeared into the night sky, she allowed herself a moment to process all that had transpired.
The sound of approaching footsteps snapped her back to reality. Quickly composing herself, Aria turned to face Garrick as he burst into the clearing. "Nightshade! Where in blazes have you been?" her mentor demanded, his face a mask of concern and irritation.
Aria forced her features into a neutral expression. "Scouting the perimeter," she lied smoothly. "I thought I heard something, but it must have been the wind." Garrick studied her for a moment before nodding gruffly. "Well, come on then. We're breaking camp at first light. The Council will want a full report."
As they made their way back to the camp, Aria's mind whirled with the implications of her midnight rendezvous. She had taken the first step down a dangerous path, one that could lead to either salvation or ruin for both humans and dragons. One thing was certain - her world would never be the same. The memory of Drakon's warm scales beneath her palm, the intensity of his gaze, and the undeniable connection between them had awakened something within Aria. It was more than mere curiosity now; it was a burning desire to uncover the truth, no matter the cost.
As she settled into her bedroll that night, Aria's dreams were filled with images of ruby scales and golden eyes. The path ahead was uncertain, fraught with danger and difficult choices. But for the first time in her life, Aria felt truly alive, poised on the brink of a great adventure that would challenge everything she thought she knew about the world and herself.
