Scales of Desire -
Chapter 20: Poisoned Minds
Chapter 20: Poisoned Minds
The portal's light faded, leaving Aria and Drakon standing in a lush forest clearing. Ancient trees towered overhead, their branches intertwining to form a verdant canopy. Motes of golden sunlight danced through the leaves, casting dappled shadows on the forest floor.
"Where are we?" Aria whispered, her eyes wide as she took in their new surroundings.
Drakon's nostrils flared as he scented the air. "Far from where we started, that much is certain. This forest feels... old. Powerful."
As they ventured deeper into the woods, an unsettling stillness descended upon them. No birds sang, no small creatures rustled in the underbrush. It was as if the entire forest held its breath, waiting for something to happen. Suddenly, a piercing shriek shattered the silence. Aria instinctively reached for her bow, only to remember she had left it behind in their hasty escape from Dragon's Bane Keep.
"What was that?" she hissed, pressing close to Drakon's side.
The dragon's scales bristled, a low growl rumbling in his chest. "Nothing good. Stay alert."
They crept forward cautiously, following the sound of commotion. As they neared the edge of a small glade, Aria gasped at the scene before them.
A young dragon, barely more than a hatchling, thrashed wildly on the ground. Its scales, which should have been a vibrant emerald green, were dulled to a sickly gray. Dark veins pulsed beneath its hide, spreading like a spiderweb of corruption.
Surrounding the writhing creature were several humans, their faces contorted with a mixture of fear and rage. One man raised a gleaming sword, preparing to strike.
Without thinking, Aria burst from their hiding place. "Stop!" she cried, placing herself between the dragon and its attackers.
The humans recoiled in surprise, their weapons wavering uncertainly. Drakon emerged from the trees, his massive form casting a shadow over the entire glade.
"What madness is this?" Drakon's voice boomed, causing the humans to shrink back further. "Why do you attack a helpless hatchling?"
One of the men, his face etched with lines of exhaustion and terror, stepped forward. "Helpless? That beast and its kind have been terrorizing our village for weeks! They've destroyed our crops, killed our livestock - we had no choice but to fight back!"
Aria frowned, glancing back at the young dragon. Its eyes were wild, unfocused, as it continued to writhe in obvious pain. This behavior was completely at odds with everything she had learned about dragons in recent months. "Something's wrong," she murmured to Drakon. "This isn't natural."
Drakon nodded grimly. "I sense it too. A darkness, a corruption spreading through its mind."
The villagers watched this exchange with growing confusion and suspicion. "You... you're with them?" another man accused, brandishing his weapon. "Traitors to your own kind!"
Aria raised her hands placatingly. "Please, listen to me. I know you're afraid, but this violence isn't the answer. There's more going on here than you realize."
As she spoke, a wave of dizziness washed over her. The Blood Oath pulsed insistently, urging her to complete her sworn task. Aria gritted her teeth, fighting against its influence.
One of the younger villagers, a girl no more than sixteen, stepped closer to Aria. Her eyes were wide with a mixture of fear and curiosity. "What do you mean? What's happening to the dragons?"
Before Aria could respond, a chilling laugh echoed through the glade. The very air seemed to darken, shadows lengthening and twisting unnaturally.
"Oh, you foolish creatures," a silky voice purred. "So easy to manipulate, so quick to turn on one another."
A figure materialized from the shadows - a woman of otherworldly beauty, her skin as pale as moonlight and her hair as dark as a starless night. Her eyes gleamed with malevolent amusement as she surveyed the scene before her.
"Who are you?" Drakon demanded, his voice a low growl of warning.
The woman's lips curled into a cruel smile. "I have many names, great dragon. But you may call me Nyx, Mistress of Shadows."
Aria felt a chill run down her spine. She had heard whispers of such beings - ancient, powerful creatures that fed on chaos and discord. But she had always dismissed them as mere legend.
Nyx glided forward, her form seeming to flicker and shift with each movement. "For centuries, I have watched you mortals scurry about, locked in your petty conflicts. But now... now the real game begins."
With a flick of her wrist, tendrils of darkness shot out, enveloping both the young dragon and several of the villagers. They cried out in pain and confusion as the shadows seeped into their skin.
"Stop this!" Aria shouted, drawing on every ounce of her training to stand firm in the face of such otherworldly power. "Whatever game you're playing, leave these innocent people out of it!"
Nyx turned her gaze on Aria, her eyes narrowing with interest. "Ah, the little peacemaker. How noble... how utterly futile."
The shadow tendrils lashed out again, this time aimed directly at Aria. But before they could reach her, Drakon's massive form interposed itself between them. The shadows hissed and recoiled from the dragon's scales, which glowed with an inner fire. "You will not touch her," Drakon snarled, his voice resonating with ancient power.
For a moment, surprise flickered across Nyx's face. Then her expression settled into one of cold calculation. "Interesting. Perhaps you are not the easy prey I anticipated."
With a gesture, she called the shadows back to her. The afflicted dragon and villagers collapsed to the ground, groaning in pain but free from the immediate influence of Nyx's power.
"This is but a taste of what is to come," Nyx declared, her voice echoing unnaturally. "The seeds of chaos have been planted. Watch as your precious alliance crumbles, as human turns on dragon and dragon on human. In the end, you will beg for the sweet release of oblivion."
Before anyone could react, Nyx dissolved into a swirl of darkness and vanished, leaving behind only the faintest echo of mocking laughter.
In the aftermath of her departure, an uneasy silence fell over the glade. The villagers huddled together, eyeing Drakon with a mixture of fear and uncertainty. The young dragon whimpered softly, its scales slowly regaining some of their natural luster.
Aria's mind raced as she tried to process what had just occurred. The appearance of Nyx changed everything, adding a new and terrifying dimension to their already precarious situation. "Drakon," she said quietly, "what are we going to do? If Nyx is spreading this corruption throughout the land..."
The great dragon's eyes were troubled as he surveyed the scene before them. "We must act quickly. This darkness, if left unchecked, could undo everything we've worked for."
One of the villagers, an older woman with steel-gray hair, stepped forward hesitantly. "You two... you're different, aren't you? You actually want peace between humans and dragons?"
Aria nodded, hope flaring in her chest. "Yes. We've discovered ancient truths, a shared history that's been forgotten. Humans and dragons were never meant to be enemies."
The woman considered this for a long moment, then straightened her shoulders with resolve. "Then perhaps it's time we started listening to each other. If there's a greater threat out there, one that seeks to destroy us all, we can't afford to fight amongst ourselves."
Murmurs of agreement rippled through the gathered villagers. Even the young dragon, now recovered enough to stand, regarded the humans with curiosity rather than fear.
As Aria looked around at this small group of humans and dragons, united in the face of a common enemy, she felt a spark of hope ignite within her. The path ahead would be fraught with danger, the influence of Nyx a constant threat to their fragile alliance. But for the first time since swearing the Blood Oath, Aria felt the weight of destiny settle upon her shoulders - not as a burden, but as a call to action.
"We have a long journey ahead of us," she declared, her voice ringing with determination. "But together, we just might have a chance of saving both our peoples."
As the sun began to set, casting long shadows across the glade, Aria and Drakon set about the task of healing wounds both physical and emotional. The battle against Nyx and her poisonous influence had only just begun, but in this small clearing, surrounded by former enemies now united in purpose, the first seeds of true change had been planted.
