Rejected By My Mate, Chosen By Fate -
Chapter 59
“Evelyn, what are you still doing up there? Aren’t you done yet?” Kayden asked me and I nodded my head and signaled him to wait a bit.
It’s tucked far away, almost as if someone didn’t want anyone to access it and this is what intrigues me more.
“What could be so good about a dusty old book that seems to interest you so much?” Tara questioned.
‘I really don’t know Tara but I just feel drawn to it. I just have to get that book and find out. If it doesn’t meet my expectations, I can just put it back.’ I told Tara and she said nothing else.
I reach into the inner shelf and try to grab the book but I’m unable to reach it and I can’t stand on my tippy toes since I’m on a ladder, I might fall.
All of a sudden, I feel powerful arms wrap around my waist tightly and lift me up a bit. I look back and see Kayden smiling at me. I give him a worried look and he still smiles at me.
“Please don’t give me that look Evelyn, do you really think that I’ll drop you? Don’t you trust me that much? I’ve already promised that I’ll always protect you so don’t worry, I won’t drop you.” He promised and some of my fear went away.
I really don’t have any doubt in him, I know very well that he would never let go of me. What I don’t trust is the ladder. Can it really hold both of our weights?
“Instead of deliberating about it so much, now that our mate has given us the leverage, why don’t you just reach and grab the book already so that we can get down and avert any disaster?” Tara questioned in a matter of fact tone and I just rolled my eyes but I listened to her anyway.
I reach for the book and grab it. When Kayden sees that I’ve taken it, he doesn’t let go of me but instead secures me to his side with one hand whilst climbing down the ladder with his other hand. I cling to him tightly but still hold the book in my hand.
He really doesn’t miss a chance to show off his incredible strength and prowess, does he? I’m just glad that he’s mine.
When we’re almost to the ground, Kayden seemed to have missed one step which causes him to lose his balance and I close my eyes anticipating a fall but when it never comes and I only hear a heavy thud instead, I open my eyes and see that we’re on the ground with Kayden on his feet and me still in his arms, clinging to him tightly from fear. My book is on the floor and the dust from it spreads around the air causing me to sneeze a bit.
Kayden’s eyes and mine meet and he speaks to me with a reassuring smile.
“I told you that I’d never let go of you or let you fall, didn’t I? But still, you have to have a little trust in me, look how tightly you’re clinging to me.” He said with a cheeky smile and I blush instantly and look away at his words. He puts me down and I smooth out my dress before picking the book up.
Alright, it’s time to inspect this book and find out why I feel so drawn to it. I sit on a chair and place the book on the reading table.
“I’ve always known that you were special but I really don’t see why you had to go through so much trouble for this dusty old book when you’ve got a pile of other good looking books to read.” Kayden said and grabbed a chair so he could sit beside me.
I dabbed some more dust off the book so I could at least see the title but after all the effort, I found that there was no title.
That’s strange.
“This book, I can feel it now. It’s no ordinary book, there’s something very strange, no rather unique about this book. I feel a strong energy radiating from it and it’s creating some kind of connection with me. We have to find out what it is, this feeling is so surreal.” Tara said and this only got me more excited. I knew there was a reason why I’d picked the book in the first place.
“The book doesn’t even have a title, are you sure you want to read it? What if it’s some really scary horror story that’ll cause you to have terrible nightmares after you read it?” Kayden questioned and I threw him a look that depicted. ‘Seriously?’
“Don’t look at me like that and don’t you dare think that I’m scared or anything like that. I’m just worried for you considering that this book is giving somewhat ominous vibes. I mean it was tucked away carefully in that shelf for a reason and the reason is probably that the owner doesn’t want anyone to find it. Who knows how long that book’s been here? It might be older than the both of us and I really don’t want us to do something that might turn out to be a serious mistake.
So I advise that we just put it back and pretend like we never saw it. You’ve got a lot of other amazing books to read.” Kayden said and I faltered a bit.
What if he was right? What if no one was supposed to find this book and that’s why it had been hidden? We just recovered from some serious issues and I don’t want any ignorant mistake of mine to cause this family any more problems so I made the decision to keep the book back where I’d found it.
“Are you seriously just going to give up on the book just like that after all the efforts we put in just to get it? Kayden may be right but there’s every possibility that he’s wrong as well. If he’s right and there’s something wrong with the book then don’t you think you’ve already unleashed what it holds by taking out the book? You might as well just find out what’s written in it. I don’t know why but I have a pretty good feeling about this book.” Tara said and I instantly made up my mind. At the very least, I’ll just take a look at it and if something doesn’t feel right about it, I’ll put it right back instantly.
I place my hand on the book and look to Kayden for support. He places a hand on mine and gives me one of his reassuring smiles and I’m all confident again.
I take a deep breath and try to open the book but it doesn’t budge, it almost feels like it’s locked or something.
I put all my strength into it and try my best to open the book but nothing happens, my futile efforts only leave me breathless.
“Don’t tell me you can’t open a simple book. You know if you wanted me to open the book and read it to you, you could have just said so.” He said teasingly and I nearly glared at him.
I shifted the book to him so he could open it instead. He tried to open it and got the same reaction as well. He tried harder to open the book, putting all his strength into it but he still couldn’t open it.
Watching him trying to open it without success was a somewhat enjoyable sight, I couldn’t stop myself from laughing.
“How is this possible? How could a book be so difficult to open? It almost feels like it’s closed shut.” Kayden said and took a break so as to catch his breath.
“I wasn’t sure before but I’m completely convinced now. This is a magic book, it’s no wonder it was hidden away. The book had probably been in existence for a very long time, longer than we might realize and it might be or might not be of werewolf origins. We’ll have to find out what it really is.” Tara said, intriguing me all the more.
‘I knew from the beginning that it was no ordinary book. Despite it being covered in dust, I knew it had to hold something special. But how are we supposed to know what it holds if we can’t even get it open?’ I questioned.
“I don’t know if this will work but why don’t you and Kayden try opening it together? If the book is magical then it might take magic to open it as well and what could be more magical than the mate bond, especially the one formed from true love?” Tara suggested and I instantly liked her idea.
It’s worth a shot. We’ll try it and if that still doesn’t get the book open, then I’ll just take it that the book doesn’t want us to see what’s inside.
I touch Kayden’s hands and try to demonstrate to him that the both of us should try to open it together. He nodded his consent. We both tried to open the book together, our hearts in our throats and shockingly, the book opened easily just like any other book but the light that shone as the book opened up was almost blinding.
Kayden and I looked away, trying to protect our eyes from the blinding light. As if we hadn’t already gotten enough surprises in that moment, the book talked.
“You have opened the special book of the goddess. This book was created as a lasting miracle of Goddess Selene to her descendants before she ascended into the heavens to watch and protect you all. I am voithós, the helper which she left behind.
She assigned me to your ancestors and because she knew that I was only a helper and I had no choice but to help whoever found me, she changed my form into that of a book and locked me up with powerful magic so that only one type of magic could open me up. The magic of true love, true love is pure and no one with evil intentions can ever be able to experience such a pristine emotion. ” The light in the book spoke.
And I found myself full of a thousand questions. Kayden held my hand and protectively brought me flush against himself.
“You don’t have to worry, I know all of your questions and you really don’t have to be afraid of me. I mean no harm at all and it’s actually quite the opposite. I’m here to help you. Since the both of you opened me up, you get to make one wish together. But remember, whatever you wish for will have a universal effect and you can’t take back whatever you wish for. So it’s up to the both of you to make a decision together and let me know what you wish for. I can only grant you one wish and there’s no limit on the wish, whatever it might be but don’t be blinded at the thought of such power at your disposal.
It’s oftentimes more dangerous than you could imagine. When you make your wish, it’ll be imprinted in my pages. Your wish and the consequence will become a story for whoever finds and opens me up in the future.
I won’t rush you into anything, I’ll let you take a look into the stories of those who have made a wish in the past so that you can have an insight of what this entails and so that you can choose wisely as well.
Before Kayden and I could protest, we felt ourselves enveloped by a sudden power and we began shrinking.
“What’s happening?” Kayden questioned but I had no answers.
“You’ll find out soon enough, just hold on.” voithós said and we both disappeared, everything turning white.
