Rejected By My Mate, Chosen By Fate -
Chapter 31
While I’m busy contemplating what to do, Margallo and Jared hug once more before Jared darts away into the darkness, leaving Margallo standing not too far from my window.
She wraps her scarf around her head once more, takes a look around before taking her leave, probably to try to get back into the palace without anyone noticing.
Since she’s acting so suspicious, I doubt that she used the door. She probably passed through a window or something.
I wondered what to do in this situation. ‘What do we do Tara? We can’t let her get away with this, she’s planning something big and we need to stop her before she executes it.’ I told Tara and she nodded.
“You’re right, she’s definitely up to no good. That double faced cheater. Kayden certainly deserves someone better. I suggest we try to follow her, we’ll definitely find something if we do. Let’s expose her once and for all and also get revenge for trying to cause harm to us and our pup.” Tara said with determination.
‘Honestly, I like this new side of you Tara. It’s awesome.’ I commended and she shook her head.
“Are you really going to stand here and shower me with praises or are we following her?” Tara questioned and I instantly remembered our plan.
“Follow her, right.” I reminded myself. “But be careful, you’ve seen how rash and dangerous she can be. We’re pregnant so we have to be careful and not get caught, if anything happens, keep in mind that it’s two lives at stake.” Tara cautioned and I nodded.
‘You’re right Tara, please don’t worry. I promise I’ll be careful’ I assured her and quickly closed my windows before throwing on a robe and walking gingerly to the door. I opened it slowly, careful not to make too much noise.
Thankfully, the door is compliant and doesn’t make any noise. I walk out carefully and soundlessly close the door behind me as well.
I look through the hallway and see that it’s empty. I look around the palace but don’t find her. I guess she hasn’t gotten into the palace yet. I listen for noises and a few minutes later, I soon hear the sound of footsteps approaching.
I look around to see if there’s anywhere to hide but there isn’t, the only option I have isn’t plausible as it’s way too small for me so I decide to act natural.
Margallo walks swiftly through the hall, definitely heading for her room. She keeps looking sideways to see if she’s being followed and she seems to be completely oblivious to the fact that I’m right in front of her.
She looks ahead of her and stops short, just a few metres from me. Her eyes go wide and there’s a shocked expression on her face but she quickly wipes it off and replaces it with a scowl.
“And what are you doing here at this time of night, you little balloon? Have you come here to steal, you sneaky little menace?” She questioned whilst using a finger to play with a lock of her hair.
I tighten my hands into fists, trying my best to maintain control. She’s lucky that I can’t speak or else she would have had an earful.
“Calm down Evelyn, remember what we just saw. She’s clearly dangerous and we have to be cautious around her at all times. Please don’t react, pretend like you came to get something so she won’t be suspicious of us. I don’t want her focusing her evil eye on our pup.” Tara said and I had to agree with her.
I take a deep breath and replace my frown with a smile. I have to make sure that she’s not suspicious of me. I demonstrate to her that I came out for a drink of water and it takes me three tries before the dummy finally understands.
She stared at me heavily as if weighing my words, trying to decide whether she wanted to believe me, I decided that I won’t let her treat me like this. She’s the one dressed like a thief, she’s the one that went out late so why am I the one being questioned?
I demonstrate to her, asking her what she’s doing there and it feels kind of odd that she picked up on what I was trying to say right away. I guess adrenaline has its ways.
“You have absolutely no right to question me here. This is my mate’s house and it belongs to me as well. You’re apparently just a guest here so stay within your limits. I wonder where your mate is and why he hasn’t come to take you away already. I wonder if he dumped you here and ran away because he couldn’t stand the sight of you anymore. I really wouldn’t blame him.” She said with an annoying laugh, her sardonic remarks feeling like needles on my delicate skin.
I feel tears brim at my eyes but I hold back, deciding to stand my ground. If she sees that her words are hurting me, she’ll only say more mean things and I won’t even be able to give her a befitting answer.
I swallow a huge lump in my throat and beam a smile instead and she pauses for a while, feeling completely thrown off her game.
“What are you smiling about? You’re a confused little soul aren’t you? Get out of my way, I don’t have time for this.” She says and pushes past me, her shoulder hitting mine but I try not to mind.
I take a deep breath due to the fact that it seems like she’s not suspicious of me. Just then, I hear the sound of her voice and turn backwards to look at her.
“And by the way, if I catch you snooping around again, I’ll make sure to teach you a valuable lesson.” She says and walks off, shaking her h**s from side to side.
My fake smile immediately reverts back to a frown. I had apparently been happy for nothing, she must suspect me now. Bad people are always extra cautious due to their fear of being caught.
“She isn’t suspicious of us, rather, I have a feeling that she’s afraid of us. She doesn’t want anyone to see her and find out about her “master” plan but we already know she’s up to something evil. All that’s left is to find out what it is. Just what is that evil little witch planning to do on her birthday?” Tara questions and I try to think hard.
‘I have absolutely no idea Tara, and I can’t take chances, not anymore. I may have suffered in the past but these people have been very good to me.
They’ve shown me extreme kindness and have proved that life is indeed worth living, they’re my family and I love them with all my heart. I won’t stand by and watch some crazy girl try to cause problems or harm my family members, not when I have the ability to stop it.
Come on Tara, we have a job to do. We have to find out what Margallo is up to and we have to find out fast.’ I say determined and Tara grins from ear to ear.
“That’s the spirit Evelyn, I feel so proud of you. You’re no longer the scared little girl that was afraid to even look up from the ground, you’re no more that girl that couldn’t afford to defend herself in the face of abuse. You’ve changed, you’ve grown up so much and I’m so proud of you. You’re now a beautiful, confident and independent young woman, you’re not that scared and abused little slave that everyone expects you to be, not anymore.” Tara says and I smile some more, my confidence reaching new heights.
‘You’re right Tara, I’m not that girl anymore. Never again, Tara. Never again will I let people abuse and trample on me like they did in the past, I’ll stand up for myself and I’ll stand tall. The people that helped me stand on my feet and helped me become this new person are being threatened by this strange woman and I won’t allow it.
We’ll have to find out Margallo’s secret no matter what. We have to find out what she’s planning and expose her.’ I say, all the more determined.
“Yes, but how? She already seems suspicious and might as well become watchful of us. We don’t know when she’ll meet up with her lover again and I have a feeling she’ll try to be more discreet the next time.” Tara says and I think hard on what to do. There must be a way, there must be a way to find out what Margallo is up to.
And just then, it clicks.
‘Yes, I’ve got it. We just need to search her room. I remember her saying she’ll write Jared a letter and send it to him before the party. We just need to get our hands on that letter before it gets out of the palace. I’m sure that once we read the letter, everything will finally become crystal clear and we’ll be able to find out Margallo’s true intentions.’ I say to her triumphantly.
“That’s actually a great plan but there’s just one problem, we don’t know exactly when she plans to send him the letter so how can we sabotage it if we don’t even know when it’ll leave the palace?” Tara questioned.
‘There’s a simple solution, we’ll just have to keep checking her room as often as we can. I’m sure that if we’re diligent enough, we’ll surely get our hands on that letter.’
“That won’t be easy Evelyn, she’s already suspicious of us so imagine what will happen if she catches us searching her room. All hell will be let loose.” Tara said and I realized she was right but there was no option and for my family, it’s a risk I’m gladly willing to take.
‘And that’s why we have to be very stealthy and careful. She shouldn’t catch us under any circumstance. It’s not going to be an easy feat but it’s not impossible. I’m willing to give it a try.’ I say curtly and Tara succumbs to the idea.
“OK, we’ll give it a try tomorrow but for now, it’s best we get some sleep. May goddess Selene always be with us, protect us and shower her blessings on us and may she bless us with the strength to protect the people we love.” Tara prayed.
‘Amen.’ I answered telepathically.
I yawn and try to stretch a bit before heading to my room to get some sleep, I have to regain my strength and be up and about. I have a big task ahead of me tomorrow and I’m going to give it my all.
