Mommy,We Got a Husband -
Chapter 226: She Was Like a Little Angel
Cormac took a step forward and felt a wave of relief wash over him. He tilted his head back, took a deep breath, and leaned forward. "Hey!"
The sudden voice behind him made Cormac jump. He spun around to see Aurora standing there, looking shy. Her eyes dropped to the ground, and she pressed her lips together. The early morning breeze made her seem even smaller and more fragile.
"What are you doing here?" Cormac was shocked to see Aurora. Had she been following him?
He hadn't noticed her at all, and he'd been on the rooftop for quite a while. Had she been there the whole time?
"I followed you. I wanted to return your stuff." Aurora held out the watch and phone he had given her.
Seeing Cormac in such a bad mood, she hadn't dared to approach him earlier.
Seeing Aurora clutching the watch and phone, Cormac felt a pang of emotion. Kids really did have the purest hearts.
"I told you, those are gifts," Cormac said.
"They're yours; I can't keep them." Aurora insisted, taking a step toward him. Since Cormac was standing at the edge, he instinctively moved back a bit.
"Come over here. It's dangerous." Aurora carefully approached and grabbed Cormac's clothes, pulling him away from the edge.
When she pulled him back, it felt like a little angel had saved him from the brink.
Did Aurora realize he was about to jump? She must have, or she wouldn't have called out just then.
In his confusion, Aurora stuffed the watch and phone into his hand. Holding them, Cormac felt a warmth spread through him.
"It's late; you should go home, or your family will worry," Cormac said gently.
But Aurora's eyes filled with tears as she shook her head. "My dad died, so no one will be looking for me."
Her words hit Cormac hard. Aurora was so young and had lost her father. Did she not have a mother, either?
Feeling sorry for her, Cormac gently hugged Aurora to comfort her. "Let me take you home."
He reached out to take her hand, but Aurora shrank back. "Don't worry, I won't hurt you," Cormac reassured her.
Aurora stopped resisting and let him hold her hand as they walked down from the rooftop.
"Why aren't you home so late?" Aurora asked, looking up at him.
"I don't have a home anymore."
The world was so big, yet there was no place he could call home.
"So you're like me? I only had my dad. Do you only have a sister?"
Cormac smiled bitterly. "I used to have everything, but now I have nothing."
Aurora fell silent, lowering her head as he led her along.
Cormac walked her all the way to her doorstep. "Alright, go home now," he said.
After saying that, Cormac turned to leave, but Aurora grabbed him tightly, as if afraid he would disappear. "You said you don't have a home. Where will you go?" Cormac couldn't answer because he truly didn't know.
Aurora didn't say anything, either. She just held his hand and led him into the house, which surprised Cormac. Was she going to take him in?
"Aren't you afraid I'm a bad person?" Cormac asked.
Aurora shook her head firmly. "You're not a bad person."
"My dad used to sleep here," Aurora said, pointing to an old sofa. Our sofa is magical; it can turn into a bed."
It was an old folding sofa. Aurora skillfully opened it and made the bed. "You can sleep here," she said.
Cormac looked around the small house. Was it just her living in the bedroom and her dad on the sofa before?
After making the bed for him, Aurora stood obediently in front of the sofa. Cormac stood there, looking at her tear-stained eyes and frail body.
For a moment, Cormac hesitated, but he still asked, "Now that you're an orphan, what will you do?"
Aurora replied, "I don't have any plans. I've already taken care of my dad's funeral. I'll go back to school tomorrow."
Aurora handled her dad's funeral by herself. And she planned to go back to school tomorrow? She was so calm and strong. Even though she had cried her eyes out at home, she still faced tomorrow with determination. "My dad was sick for many years. I knew he would leave me eventually. He always told me to live a good life because many people fight to live but can't.
He was very sick but couldn't afford treatment and kept working. He told me that if he ever left, I should live well. There are many good people in the world who would help me finish high school.
So I was mentally prepared, but I thought he would die from illness. I didn't expect him to never come back after that car accident."
Cormac's eyes welled up. This was the first time he felt like crying since he had wept over the deaths of Ravenna and Orion. Cormac felt like a failure. As an adult, he was not even as strong as Aurora, who had endured so much hardship yet remained strong. Cormac gently hugged Aurora and comforted her, "Yes, your dad was right. We should live a good life. You're amazing, truly amazing."
Aurora looked up at him. "So you have to live bravely, too. My dad said that when people die, they become stars in the sky. Even though your family isn't with you, they can see you every night. If they see you happy, they'll be happy too." Cormac couldn't hold back his tears. Aurora had indeed realized he wanted to commit suicide earlier.
"What's your name?" Cormac asked.
"My name is Aurora Ryan. I'm fourteen years old. Everyone calls me Aurora."
"Aurora? That's a beautiful name. My name is Cormac Nash."
Aurora could be considered his savior. Her words gave him the will to live.
Aurora said, "I'll remember your name. Cormac, if you don't mind, you can stay here. My dad is gone, and it's just me living here. I'm a little scared."
Cormac gently patted her head, feeling genuine pity for Aurora.
