Mafia Billionaire’s Forlorn Wife -
Chapter 61
The sound of the gunshot blares through the room as my arm rings slightly from the after effects while little smoke rises from the mouth of my pistol.
My skin prickles with the bite of the cold as I watch the snow get tainted by b***d that oozes out from the chest of the Serb that I have just killed.
All around me, towering mountains surround me as I stand near the southern end of the Salazar grounds. Every inch of this valley is manned by my soldiers, and even though it is Leo’s family that started it all, I am the one who runs it.
“Are there any more?” I ask, my voice falling disinterested and cold to my own ears as I continue staring at the dead Serb’s face.
The bastard was caught trying to sneak into Salazar.
We take our privacy as the most important aspect of our lifestyle here. Every single person in this academy comes from high places and most are destined to go for higher places. Exclusivity and secrecy are the two mottos this place works on.
But even through all the stringent methods that are in place to remain hidden from the world, there is still the occasional extraordinaire that manages to breach our defences and try to infiltrate the ranks.
And even though the man I just killed was a part of the second attempt in the last five years since I have been here, it was still two more than I would have liked.
And for that, the Serb f*****g paid the price.
“He had two friends, both of them died in cold storage last night.” Kian tells me from where he’s standing about a few feet behind me as usual.
That is when I turn around to give him a judgemental look for that.
Even though Salazar works on fairly just principles, there is always a few things that make me question everything about my existence.
Their exceptionally cruel methods of killing people is one of them.
And sadly, it also isn’t something that can be changed that easily.
This organisation is extremely set in their ways and because of that, any change proposed can easily be shot down.
Kian shrugs seeing the look on my face, “the two of them were particularly nasty to a younger assassin candidate when they were trying to blend in for the sake of their mission.”
Realisation and understanding dawns upon me and I shrug.
Finally turning around, I hold the gun by the edge of the handle as I hand it back to Kian who instantly holsters it.
It has been five years but to this day he continues taking his duties as my bodyguard in all seriousness. No matter how much I deny him, he always follows the proper protocol and tells me how it is important for me to maintain a hierarchy here.
I look around and meet the eyes of one of the mercenaries that Kian trained last summer, “get rid of him and give me a briefing of what he came here to do.”
“Yes ma’am.” And with that, he along with two more of the men who were standing around us start towards the Serb while Kian and I turn around from the scene and start making our way back into the main building.
From where I am standing, I can see a sharp drop to my left while Salazar grounds stand proudly and strongly to my right, spanning all the way up to the tip of the mountain. Salazar is a technological as well as architectural wonder with so much detail given to their security layers that maximum people in this world think of Salazar to be a myth.
Kian and I pass through the training grounds as the soldiers assigned to their respective spots bow their heads towards me in respect.
That is something that I will never get used to.
Salazar used to be run by Leo’s distant family members but with time I came to realise what kind of a corrupt organisation they were running.
And thankfully, with Kian helping me and standing by my side through everything, we were able to expose them and get them to step down from their positions.
It was after that instance that I finally took over for Leo since it is not possible for him to come all the way here and sit as the head of Salazar when he has more important things to do back in the States.
“Cabrera has been silent for a while now.” Kian mentions the moment we enter the wide expanse of one of the private training rooms that is mostly used by us.
I furrow my brows, completely in the mood to go straight for the ring in the centre of the room as I start making my way towards it, “when was the last time you spoke to him?” I question, lifting the barrier just enough for me to enter the ring while Kian follows after me.
I’m glad that I wore my combat ensemble because whenever Kian and I spar, things tend to get a little messy and b***d splatters are the worse enemies of favourite outfits.
“When I personally visited him ten days ago to deliver the package.” Kian explains as he cracks his knuckles and without even saying a word about it, we both get into our positions knowing what the other person wants.
The dullness of death that creeps over me after taking lives with my bare hands is something that I never seem to get the hang of.
And even though in my time here I have not taken as many lives as most men and women in this organisation, most definitely not even a fraction of the ones that Kian has taken, but still the guilt of it doesn’t let me sleep at night.
Not that I can sleep much anyways.
“You think that the Ledger will be safe with him?” I question, slight worry for the last surviving Cabrera clouds my mind as Kian and I start a series of attacks and counterattacks in hand to hand combat with each other.
His fist slashes forward and I swiftly shift out of the way just in time before swiping my leg towards his and attacking the back of his knee without a moment’s pause.
Kian almost stumbles but manages to catch his burly frame as he glares at me before dashing towards me to grab me by the throat but before he can do that, I duck and punch him straight into his gut and slide out from his vicinity.
Kian’s lips curl up in a challenging smirk as he looks at me while saying, “I mean, the Ledger does belong in the family, Reigna. But I know that Franco is not exactly a careful person…”
I roll my eyes, “that is the understatement of the century.” I mutter while Kian and I go a few rounds, punching, kicking, defending ourselves in a series of well practiced movements.
Sometimes Kian changes the course when I start getting too comfortable but I am quick to respond to his attacks in the trained manner that he has taught me in.
I even think he looks mildly proud of the way I handle his attacks but he never says those things to my face. I think he’s afraid of me getting way over in my head if he compliments me.
“Why don’t you like Franco, seriously?” Kian asks sidestepping me just as he hooks his leg around my calf and I fall on my back.
A smirk appears on Kian’s face which I roll my eyes at as I take his hand and bring myself back to my feet and we start again.
“Because he is a master of illusions because the whole underworld seems to be under this illusion that he is some revered and feared mafia lord when in reality he’s a f*****g crybaby and a man child who hasn’t stopped eating and f*****g his way through the entirety of Europe since his father passed away!” I mutter, blocking another one of his punches before Kian ends up laughing at my sentence.
I roll my eyes, cracking my knuckles as he bends at the waist to finish laughing while I shake my head, “Franco Cabrera is a f*****g disaster in my opinion.” I mutter.
Kian gives me a pointed look, “and you’re certain that you’re not bad mouthing him just because he’s unfortunately your half brother, right?”
I stare at him wordlessly for a moment before huffing, “that has nothing to do with the facts I just spoke.” I mutter stubbornly when in reality every cell of my body hates being associated with Franco and the Cabrera clan in some manner.
Thanks, dad.
Kian opens his mouth to say something before the door opens and Georgia, one of the higher up agents working here strides into the room with a worried expression on her face.
“What’s wrong?” Kian questions while I just observe with all signs of mirth disappearing from my face.
“Mr. Cabrera has been kidnapped by the Bratva.”
