Love Unbreakable by Bank Brook -
Chapter 224
? ? ? ? ?
Mitchel collapsed to the ground. He tried to stand up, but to no avail.
His legs refused to support him, leaving him motionless on the ground.
Furthermore, a numbness spread through him. It was as if his heart had stopped beating, leaving him feeling empty and lifeless.
"Mr. Dixon! Matteo arrived with a team. His eyes quickly followed Mitchel's gaze to the motionless figure on the ground in the middle of the pool of blood.
Although he was already used to horrifying scenes, Matteo was still shocked by the scene before him.
“Mrs. Dixon…” Matteo managed, his voice tight with emotion.
Mitchel shook off Matteo's help and pointed at the figure.
“Go… Confirm,” Mitchel ordered in a barely audible voice. He had to see it for himself before he could accept it.
"Of course". Matteo approached the figure hoping to discern the identity.
The person, face down and seriously injured, was unrecognizable.
Furthermore, blood, mixed with a gruesome, slimy substance that might have been brain matter, soaked the floor. The sight was so horrible that no one wanted to watch it.
One of the bodyguards was unable to digest the scene and vomited on the spot.
Matteo crouched near the body and searched for any form of identification or jewelry, but found nothing.
Regardless of the identity, it was clear that he could not be left in that state. Matteo ordered one of his team to cover him with a large piece of black cloth.
“Is that her?”
A chilling voice suddenly cut the silence.
Matteo turned, realizing that Mitchel had approached silently.
After a moment's hesitation, Matteo admitted: "Mr. Dixon, I'm sorry, but I can't confirm the identity."
“Step aside!” Mitchel ordered.
Matteo understood Mitchel's intentions. But personally confirming the identity of the body would be distressing. If it was Raegan, the memory of the vision would haunt Mitchel forever.
In a gentle attempt to dissuade him, Matteo suggested, "Mr. Dixon, perhaps we should wait for the forensic team to confirm this. This is not something I should see..."
His words were cautious, but the grim reality was unmistakable.
The gruesome mix of brain matter, skull fragments and blood was a sight no one should witness.
However, Mitchel ignored Matteo's advice. He pushed it determinedly and knelt next to the covered body.
Mitchel seemed calm on the outside, but his inner turmoil was evident in the way he dismissed Matteo.
Furthermore, his body trembled with barely contained excitement.
Seeing Mitchel distressed, Matteo tried to intervene once again.
"Mr. Dixon..."
Mitchel ignored him and reached out toward the black cloth.
His fingers trembled as they got closer. A few agonizing seconds later, he finally grabbed the corner of the fabric.
For five long minutes he remained motionless, silent, without even breathing. Then, in a sudden movement, he raised his arm to his forehead, his body shaking uncontrollably.
"Mr. Dixon…” Matteo rushed to support him.
Just then, Mitchel stood up and declared, "It's not her."
Mitchel's intense reaction was one of immense relief. He looked like someone who had gone through hell only to find a sudden ray of hope.
In the midst of the chaos, one of the bodyguards shouted, "There's another one over here!"
They all ran there and found a man on the ground. He had miraculously avoided serious injury, save for a sharp bamboo pole impaling his leg.
Then, like a gust of wind, a figure ran up, knelt beside the wounded man, and shouted, “Henley! "Henley!" "Henley!"
Matteo's eyes widened in disbelief. It was Raegan, very alive.
Noticing Matteo's presence, Raegan quickly asked, "Where's the ambulance?"
Matteo was stunned for a second and then blurted out: "He's out."
“Bring her!” Raegan urged. Then he noticed the cold, attractive figure behind Matteo. Just as he was going to say something to Mitchel, the injured Henley on the ground grabbed his hand.
“Raegan…”
Raegan looked back at Henley and asked worriedly, "Henley, how are you feeling?"
Henley smiled, but blood was dripping from the corner of his mouth. The severity of his internal injuries, if any, remained unknown.
«I'm fine... If something happens to me, can you take care of my parents?
"You'll be fine!" Raegan firmly disagreed with tears cascading down her cheeks.
«Henley, you're going to be okay. I know…"
Raegan's mind was still confused. Exhaustion had overwhelmed her and she was teetering on the brink of surrender. Tessa's knife had left a cut in her skin.
At that critical moment, Henley had appeared out of nowhere. He lunged at Tessa and they both fell down the stairs.
All Raegan saw was the blood scattered on the floor. She had feared the worst for Henley, and the thought that he had died because of her drove her to the brink of despair.
Finally, he found the strength to go down the stairs.
There he found Henley, still conscious, although injured. Relief washed over her knowing she had survived.
Raegan would never forgive herself if something had happened to Henley because of her.
But soon, relief gave way to lingering fear.
He had escaped by the skin of his teeth. Just a matter of centimeters.
He was so close to death. Had it not been for Henley's quick rescue, she would have been the one lying there motionless, her face unrecognizable.
Mitchel, who was silently watching Raegan sob over Henley, felt a heavy heart.
Ever since she had disappeared, his heart had been in a constant state of unrest and unable to find peace.
When he thought that the wretched body on the ground was Raegan, he felt as if an invisible giant hand was tearing his heart, and the pain still lingered.
God only knew the overwhelming relief and joy he felt to see her alive and with only minor injuries at most. How he wished he could hug her tightly.
But what about her?
His gaze was fixed solely on Henley. Not once did she look away from him.
In that instant, Mitchel felt as if his heart was pierced again, and a numbing coldness spread through him.
After the suffering she had gone through to save Raegan, staying here without attracting Raegan's attention seemed like a cruel twist of fate.
The joy that had once illuminated his face upon seeing her safe and sound slowly faded and left an empty space in his heart.
In a few moments, his expression turned into indifference.
It was as if he had encased his heart in an impenetrable layer of ice and the air around him had turned frigid.
At that moment, the sound of sirens broke the deafening silence. Police cars and ambulances had arrived. Medical staff treated Henley and took him away on a stretcher.
Only when the medical staff approached Mitchel with another stretcher did Raegan's attention finally focus on him. Raegan noticed the serious wound on Mitchel's legs. The injuries had worsened due to the lack of immediate medical attention and exertion, which was evident by the persistent bleeding.
His injuries had not been noticeable, partly due to the low light and his black pants.
But under the glare of the emergency lights, the severity of his injuries became apparent. Blood had soaked into the black fabric of his pants, staining them a dark brown.
How much blood had been lost to saturate pure black pants?
Raegan's face drained of color as a wave of pain and anguish washed over her.
This wasn't like the guilt and self-blame she felt when she feared Henley would sacrifice himself to save her.
For Raegan, the emotions she felt toward Henley were driven by guilt and self-reproach.
With Mitchel, however, it was different. Her heart had already softened into a warm, flowing stream when he bravely stepped in to save her.
He had risked his life for her not once but twice. Any past resentment seemed to dissolve thanks to his sacrifice.
Plus, in those moments when he thought he was going to die, the only person he wanted to say goodbye to was Mitchel.
At least it was the last person he saw before he died. For Reagan, that was enough.
But now, they were both still alive and clinging to the hope that maybe...
Raegan felt a sharp pain in her nose. I longed to reach out and hold him. But when he extended his fingers, Mitchel coldly pushed them away.
Assuming Raegan loved Henley, Mitchel was no longer interested in her words or explanations. He just turned around.
