Love Unbreakable by Bank Brook -
Chapter 185
? ? ? ? ?
After a while, Raegan spotted Mitchel leaning against a tree, stealing glances at him as he descended.
Avoiding any interaction, Raegan opted to step lower and settled into the shade, awaiting Bryce's arrival.
The midday sun scorched the hillside and made Raegan thirsty.
Unfortunately, the only bottle of water was missing.
The prospect of enduring two days in such conditions seemed daunting, especially assuming Bryce would deny her water unless she admitted defeat.
As Mitchel descended, Raegan closed her eyes, adhering to the “out of sight, out of mind” mantra.
However, as she passed by him, a smell she knew very well reached her.
The sound of something hitting the ground made Raegan open her eyes. Mitchel had left a bottle of water.
She wondered why she had never before considered it impolite for him to throw away the trash.
The bottle, caught by a ray of sunlight, seemed to have water rippling inside.
Skeptical, Raegan blinked hard, only to confirm that it was, indeed, half full.
Frozen in place for minutes, her resistance finally gave way and she approached the bottle.
Retrieving it, Raegan's expression was a mix of relief and confusion.
He consoled himself with the thought that Mitchel was in top form.
The sun's rays made the water shine, tempting his parched throat.
Determined, Raegan unscrewed the cap and leaned her head back to drink without touching the bottle with her lips.
He only dared to take a few sips from the half-full bottle.
As soon as she put down the bottle, Raegan noticed Mitchel, who returned and stood before her with his eyes half-closed and his arms crossed.
His expression was as if she was a pervert for drinking the mineral water he had been sipping.
A sudden coughing fit overtook Raegan and her cheeks turned red.
Mitchel held out a hand, causing Raegan to clutch the bottle defensively to her chest, hastily stating, "I'll give it back to you when we're off this mountain."
Mitchel's outstretched hand stopped in the air and, in an icy tone, he responded: "No need."
His increasingly somber expression made Raegan assume that he did not wish to have any further dealings with her.
The feeling was mutual. Plus, for a CEO, a bottle of water was trivial.
Mitchel's gaze darkened as he watched Raegan cautiously put half a bottle of water in her bag.
The tension in the air was palpable as Bryce and Eloise approached.
Bryce's unkempt blue hair made him look particularly frightening.
Seeing Mitchel, Bryce pushed Eloise toward Mitchel urgently, exclaiming, "Mitchel, you're the one who's supposed to take care of her."
If it hadn't been for Eloise, who had grabbed onto his arm and dragged him, Bryce would have ascended sooner.
Eloise was disheartened. If I had known how exhausting the day would be, I would never have accompanied Mitchel on a hike.
Clinging to Mitchel's arm, Eloise pleaded softly, “Mitchel, I'm tired. Can you accompany me back?
Mitchel gave him a brief glance and offered, "I'll arrange for you to be taken."
Eloise's expression instantly soured, interpreting his words as an intention to send her back alone.
Earlier, Mitchel had expressed his desire not to see her, which had left Eloise crying all night, her eyes swollen with tears.
With no other alternative, Eloise's parents had implored Mitchel to at least consider Eloise a friend.
Eloise, stubborn as ever, was in no hurry to change her mind about her adoration of Mitchel and needed time to calm down.
Mitchel, for the sake of Eloise's parents, had not expelled Eloise, but had instead invited her to join the mountain excursion.
Now, it seemed like Mitchel was subtly declining Eloise's advances.
But Eloise refused to give up so easily, especially with Mitchel's ex-wife present, possibly hoping for a moment alone with him.
Gazing at Mitchel's striking features, Eloise shook her head determinedly.
"I'm not leaving."
She was in love with this handsome man and had never met anyone who rivaled Mitchel's attractiveness.
Mitchel just looked at Eloise and remained silent.
Noon had arrived.
Bryce unpacked an assortment of fast food, urging everyone to help themselves.
His defiant look at Raegan seemed to dare her to confess her hunger.
Raegan turned around, ignoring them.
Soon, the tantalizing smell of food wafted through the air and Raegan's stomach rumbled. He took jerky out of his bag, rationed it, and ate just enough to satisfy his hunger.
His foresight in packing practical items into his small bag was proving beneficial.
By nightfall, they had reached the top of the mountain.
While Bryce ordered the workers to set up camp for him, he left Raegan to fend for herself.
While the others rested in the erected tents, Raegan struggled with the hammer, which slipped and hit her hand, causing her to involuntarily cry out in pain.
He looked up with tear-filled eyes, habitually seeking Mitchel's help, only to be met with his disdainful gaze.
Embarrassed, she quickly averted her eyes, punishing herself for such an error in judgment. How could she forget Mitchel's deep contempt for her?
As dinnertime approached, Eloise came out of her tent and called to Mitchel: “Mitchel, come eat. Bryce has brought a feast of food and beer.
Offered all kinds of food, Eloise got down to business with Bryce.
Mitchel looked at the Raegan and felt his patience wearing thin.
He anticipated her imminent request for help.
With a scoff, he left without a second thought.
Once Raegan noticed Mitchel's departure, she allowed herself to relax and settled down on the floor.
A bitter smile played on his lips, reflecting on his own expectations.
Raegan had been self-sufficient for so long that she managed to set up the store on her own after much effort.
After walking all day through the mountains, her body felt the pangs of hunger and thirst, leaving her exhausted.
Ignoring everything else, he went into the tent and fell asleep.
The quiet whisper finally woke Raegan.
He turned on the flashlight and shouted, "Who's there?"
Hearing footsteps outside, Raegan wrapped herself in a cloak of fear, too scared to be alone.
Clinging to his spray for protection, he peered into the store without finding anything unusual.
However, the thought of sleeping eluded him.
His shop was located on the edge of the cliff. After a moment's hesitation, Raegan approached Eloise's tent, which was safely in the center.
Standing near Eloise's tent, Raegan caught the sound of Eloise's voice from inside.
«Mitchel, stop doing that. You tickle me..."
The voice passed through Raegan, an icy blast that chilled her to the core.
She froze for a moment.
He regained his composure and backed away.
Wasn't it normal for Mitchel to be intimate with another woman? After all, they were divorced. Driven by desire, he was not one to abstain.
His thoughts were abruptly interrupted when a hand covered his mouth in the darkness.
Startled, Raegan fought back fiercely.
But the assailant grabbed her hair tightly and dragged her into the shadows.
