Chapter 1673:
? ? ? ? ?
During her time abroad, Nicole was introduced to WDC, a prestigious company known for its strict admission criteria. The workload within its walls was notoriously intense. However, whenever she met Rhett, he always made time to attend to her.
Nicole found this strange. She asked Raegan, “How well do you know Mr. Bates?”
“Not much. I know of his remarkable performance at the Dixon Group. Rhett visited us once, expressing his gratitude to the Dixon Group for training him. It was quite a coincidence. At that time, I mentioned his need for a divorce attorney. Rhett had just recounted that he had won a complicated divorce case, a matter I had heard about before. Given the complexity of that case, I figured if anyone could help you against Jarrod, it would be him,” Raegan explained.
Nicole's suspicions grew as she listened intently. It struck her as an extraordinary coincidence that Rhett brought up her experience in divorce cases just when she found herself in need of legal help. If it hadn't been for Rhett, Raegan might have sought help elsewhere. One case might be considered mere chance, but the repetition of timely appearances seemed to go beyond coincidence.
An uneasy feeling was gnawing at Nicole. “Do you think Rhett is trustworthy?” she asked.
"Rhett seems to be pretty decent. The only thing peculiar is his lack of romantic entanglements. I heard he had a close relationship with a girlfriend who tragically passed away," Raegan said.
Nicole seized on the crucial detail. “What were the circumstances surrounding your girlfriend’s death?”
“I'm not sure,” Raegan replied. “I’ll have to ask my husband to look into it on your behalf.”
“Could you ask Mitchel to investigate discreetly, making sure Mr. Bates remains in the dark?” Nicole asked.
“Sure,” Raegan replied readily. “But what is motivating this investigation? Have you discovered anything? Is Mr. Bates a threat? Then you need to stay away from him. Share your findings and Mitchel will dig deeper.”
Raegan felt a surge of anxiety. She had introduced Rhett to Nicole, so any business with him would weigh heavily on her conscience, potentially putting her closest friend in danger.
Nicole refrained from confirming anything, not wanting to unnecessarily alarm Raegan. She shook her head. “It's nothing. I simply wish to dig deeper into his background. He’s been immensely helpful and I want to ensure his integrity.”
“Understood. I’ll call for help,” Raegan said, already picking up the phone to contact her husband.
At the end of the meal, Mitchel called back. Raegan relayed the message. “He says Rhett’s girlfriend passed away from an illness. Records indicate it was a rare disease, though.”
Exhaling deeply, Nicole felt a wave of relief wash over her, assuming she might have been overthinking things. She had gotten the idea that Rhett harbored animosity towards her family, her imagination roaming freely.
After finishing their meal, they parted ways, each in their own direction. When they got home, Nicole found herself unable to shake off a nagging feeling of restlessness, which led her to go to bed early.
The next morning, she was startled awake by a cacophony of noises coming from outside. Without hesitation, Nicole flung open the door, only to be immediately obstructed from view by the two vigilant bodyguards stationed there.
“What's wrong?” Nicole asked, a tone of urgency in her voice.
“Nothing to worry about, Miss Lawrence. Go back and rest,” one of the bodyguards reassures her.
Despite their reassurances, Nicole was still not convinced. She refused to be kept in the dark and decided to face the danger. She got past the guards and found a lifeless animal on the threshold, its small tail sticking out against a backdrop of blood.
The strong smell of blood triggered Nicole's gag reflex, and she ran to the bathroom to expel the contents of her stomach. Once Nicole regained her composure, she retraced her steps to the door from which the deceased animal had been taken.
"Make sure it's buried well," he ordered.
