Chapter 1650:
? ? ? ? ?
Even now, Brett's heart raced as he recalled the events of that day.
«I heard the commotion downstairs and realized that something had happened to Mr. Lawrence. But before moments, he had assured me of his support, inviting me to seek his help if ever needed. Why then should he suddenly meet his end by jumping to his death?
Brett's initial suspicion centered on the unknown figure he had encountered, whose hurtful behavior seemed incongruous for a staff member.
However, it was not just this observation that led Brett to suspect foul play in Mr. Lawrence's death. Brett also noticed that Mr. Lawrence's computer was still on, showing the distressing video of Nicole being stalked.
Knowing Wesson's unwavering devotion to Nicole, Brett reasoned that Wesson would never leave such a video accessible if he intended to end his own life.
Instead, Wesson would have taken steps to erase or hide it, protecting Nicole from further disgrace.
At that moment, Brett's mind was filled with worries. His main concern was to avoid any implication in case someone discovered his presence.
With his daughter awaiting his return, he couldn't afford to be embroiled in a scandal. In a frantic rush, I removed the USB drive from Wesson's computer and hurried away.
Later, consumed by fear, Brett retreated into the countryside, unable to summon the courage to attend the funeral. After remaining in hiding for several days, Brett cautiously emerged to gather information, but discovered that the newspapers had ruled Wesson's death a suicide.
Brett then knew that the truth had been hidden.
Playing his role, Brett contacted the woman as instructed, feeling complacent as she praised his efforts and provided him with the contact details of the overseas surgeon. When the situation calmed down, Brett took Callie to have her operated on overseas. After she recovered, he brought her back home.
During Callie's treatment, the foreign terrain proved unsettling for Brett, as the widespread presence of firearms made him constantly fear for his daughter's safety. Ultimately, he concluded that his homeland offered the greatest safety and returned with Callie.
Back home, Brett led a quiet life, running a small business to support his family. He avoided corporate entanglements, fearing that a thorough background check would expose his past.
For five years, Brett enjoyed a quiet existence, convinced his past was buried, until Nicole's search for the truth shattered his illusion of tranquility.
After hearing his story, Nicole remained silent for a long moment. Then she pulled out a photo from her phone and showed it to Brett. “Was this the woman who contacted you?”
Brett picked up the phone and scrutinized the image carefully before confirming, “Yes, that’s her.”
Memories flooded back to Brett. When Jamie had approached him, he had always hidden his identity behind elaborate disguises: masks, hats, and sunglasses.
Brett was not easily fooled, however. He had followed Jamie on the sly and had seen her unmasked from a distance. From that moment on, he had burned her face into his memory, harboring the silent hope that one day the truth would be revealed.
Even if Jamie did not directly cause Wesson's death, his attempt to do harm was unmistakable, likely linked to a network of criminal activities.
Today, Nicole has finally faced the truth. Jamie, that poisonous woman, had not only conspired against her, but also against her father.
