Chapter 1583:

? ? ? ? ?

Nicole was speechless. Picking a fight with the stubborn old lady seemed pointless. Understanding her grandmother's fiery temper, Callie quickly urged Nicole to leave. “You should go. My grandmother can be quite fierce. “She could really hit you.”

Nicole hesitated to agitate the old woman further. She returned to her car and drove away.

Nicole chose not to push Callie any further, believing that if Callie was still the innocent girl she remembered, Callie would eventually offer to help. If not, she would respect Callie's decision. After all, family ties were strong, and it was natural for people to feel protective of their loved ones.

Nicole was still determined to find Brett. Closing the case of her father's death was imperative.

When Nicole left, Laurie's agitation subsided. She grabbed Callie by the shoulders and studied her closely.

“Honey, are you really okay? Please don't lie to me. Your father contacted me, worried about your safety. “He implored me to keep you at home upon your return.”

Callie paused briefly before reassuring her grandmother. “I'm fine, Laurie. “I had a scary encounter, but a kind woman intervened and ensured my safety.”

“Did I save you?” Laurie asked skeptically, harboring suspicions about Nicole's intentions toward her family.

“Yes, she saved me. Do you remember the Lawrence family, where my father worked? “She is their daughter and she visited me often,” Callie explained.

Her memory faltering, Laurie finally remembered Nicole at Callie's insistence. “Oh, that family. Mr. Lawrence was a good man, and his family was always kind,” Laurie commented, remembering the kindness the Lawrence family had shown them over the years.

However, Laurie didn't understand Nicole's motivation for looking for her son. She turned to Callie and asked, "Why are you looking for your father?"

Callie nervously bit her lip and replied, “She said that my father was the last person to see Mr. Lawrence before he died. “She wishes to speak with my father to verify certain details.”

Hearing this, Laurie's eyes lit up with sudden understanding. She remembered how her son had unexpectedly acquired a significant amount of money despite his modest income. He had used it to facilitate Callie's kidney transplant.

Callie, with her rare blood type, had endured a long and uncertain wait for a compatible donor. Brett had found a potential donor, but just before the operation, the donor withdrew his offer.

The cycle of hope followed by disappointment had deeply affected Brett, transforming him from a compassionate and upright person to one who frequently complained about life.

Then, one fateful day, Brett went into hiding. About a month later, they received news of another suitable kidney, which required surgery abroad.

Brett had accompanied Callie overseas for the operation. After his return, Callie's health gradually improved and they secluded themselves in their old residence.

Despite Brett's discretion regarding her efforts, she always provided financial support and reassurance, citing her personal savings. Laurie often wondered how Brett, a modest laborer, could afford all this.

However, she refrained from asking, content with her apparent success.

Now, hearing Callie's comments, Laurie became suspicious about the source of the funds, perhaps related to Wesson's death.

Oblivious to Laurie's speculation, Callie asked, "Laurie, why is my father so trying on hiding? If he's innocent, shouldn't he address the situation? We don't have to live in seclusion."
